That was a busy week.
Saturday was FULL of errands and prepping for camp until I eventually collapsed in bed for a nap.
Sunday was church, the World Cup Final, Belle had a friend over all afternoon, and then we immediately went to camp drop off. First thing Monday morning I had my 3-year follow-up appointment from my laser eye surgery (I still have better than 20/20 vision, so YAY!), followed by a whole day of various errands.
Turns out, adulting comes with a lot of appointments and phone calls and paperwork.
That said, it was a mostly Happy Week.
THE SOUND OF SILENCE… SORT OF
This was our much-anticipated week of peace and quiet. Both kids were at sleep away camp—Belle as a leader, Indy as a camper.
It was not without hiccups.
Someone threw up the first evening of camp, mostly due to the heat, I think. One of our kids is extremely sensitive to this sort of thing. Even the sound of someone pretending to gag sets them off in a visceral way.
We got calls from camp about homesickness, and it was a juggling act of being loving and kind while also encouraging them to persevere. They were safe and mostly having a lot of fun and the child that threw up rebounded very quickly. But instead of fully relaxing into the week, I felt on edge knowing that a call might come at any point asking us to collect said child and bring them home.
BUT they did persevere. We talked on the phone each night and together we got through the week and a lot of fun was had by everyone. Next week, Indy and I are headed to the lake to see my parents, so it should hopefully be quasi-relaxing. Belle is at camp, so Indy is flying solo which means no sibling fights, but it also means he’ll want me by his side fishing for 10 hours a day.
John took Monday through Wednesday off work, so we got to sleep in.
Sort of.
Two of those mornings, we still had to be up reasonably early for appointments (again, those joys of adulting), but time feels much more expansive without kids in the house!
We also spent a lot of time working, doing little projects around the house, and going on a few long walks. It was a really great week and I’m already looking forward to next year!
CELEBRATING… US!
This week marks 17 years of marriage. He will forever and always be my favourite hunk of cheese on the charcuterie board.
17 years feels… mind-boggling. Didn’t we just get married yesterday? At the same time, it feels like forever ago. We were chatting about life over coffee this morning and were marvelling that this time next year, Belle will likely have her learner’s permit TO DRIVE A CAR.
What in the actual world?!
And what better way to celebrate our love than with a delicious steak dinner?
(Apologies, my dear vegan friends.)
I have steak once a year, in honour of our anniversary, and it’s amazing. We go to the same restaurant each and every time, The Keg. And I order the same thing each and every time: filet mignon, a twice-baked potato, and seasonal vegetables. When we make the reservation, we tell them we’re celebrating our anniversary, and every year we get dessert on the house.
This year, it was cheesecake.
Ironically enough, I usually only make my favourite Unbaked Cheesecake at Christmas. John often makes one for my birthday, but we were in Denmark this year.
I decided that while the kids were away—and in celebration of our anniversary, my birthday, and MY LOVE OF CHEESECAKE—I would make an Unbaked Cheesecake.
And then we were offered free cheesecake at the restaurant.
Bless his heart, John immediately told me that mine was better. (I happen to agree.)
Still, it wasn’t hard to choke down the restaurant’s offering. The waitress recommended getting all three available toppings—chocolate, caramel, and raspberry—and who were we to disagree?
PUTTERING
Hi. My name is Elisabeth, and one of my favourite things to do in all the world is putter.
I think my ideal day would involve at least several hours of doing things at my own speed. I don’t even know how to define what I do, exactly. It’s a mix of this and that.
Right now, I’m writing this blog post.
I prepared another bag of kids’ clothes for the consignment store. I called (you know how I feel about using the phone) and made an appointment. I used Goo Gone to remove some pesky labels.
I reorganized the storage totes in our basement. (I know, I know. It takes a special sort of person to enjoy reorganizing EMPTY totes.)
LOST AND FOUND
A major storyline this week was tearing our house apart—top to bottom—looking for a missing vehicle key.
We ran a whole bunch of errands as a family on Saturday, and by Sunday morning, one of the SUV keys was missing.
Those things are incredibly expensive to replace.
Plus, it was maddening trying to retrace our steps. We were sure it was in the house, but we had looked almost literally everywhere.
My keys have an Apple AirTag on them. John’s keys did not. Guess which set of keys went missing.
We spent hours over several days looking through couch cushions and drawers. We searched the fridge, the freezer, and every reusable tote we take to the grocery store.
In the end, the key was inside a container full of water bottles, high on a shelf.
That water bottle tote sits on a shelf above the hook where our keys go. I must have reached up to put it away, somehow snagged the key off the hook, and knocked it into the basket without realizing it.
John said he had been praying specifically that we would find it, so thank you, Lord!
The worst part of the whole thing is we had a BRAND-NEW set of extra AirTags and simply hadn’t installed them yet.
They are now attached to every set of keys we own!
THOMAS DAMBO TROLLS

- But that’s not all!! I watched Meagan Francis’s latest YouTube video. She now hosts The Kettle and formerly co-hosted The Mom Hour. The video was about a kayak trip with her husband, and who should make a surprise appearance but Benny the Beard Fisher—a Dambo troll located along the Manistique River in Michigan! I could not have scripted the timing better if I had planned it out.
HELPING OTHER PEOPLE SAVE MONEY
These two blog comments made me positively giddy.
First, I mentioned in this post about how there is an exceptionally good bonus deal currently being offered for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (it’s not easily available in Canada, so I’m out of luck). It nudged Julie to take the plunge AND she was able to get a referral code from Birchie which will net Birchie a few free hotel stays. I mean, I wish I could get in on the Chase action, but the absolute next best thing is sending Birchie out on more adventures because she is the GOAT of fun travel right now.
And then Amy chimed in about submitting a claim for flight compensation after I wrote about our $4,000 windfall due to a cancellation!

Fieety Vacuum and Eufy Robot Vacuums
Funny thing: my floors stay so much cleaner when there are no kids in the house. I’ve written about various vacuum-related things before, but there are two kinds I use regularly and love. First up is this Fieety vacuum (currently on sale). John researched all sorts of options a few years ago and settled on this one for a Christmas gift. I LOVE IT. I use it daily, and a charge lasts a long time.
We use the upright vacuum in tandem with our two Eufy robot vacuums. There are all sorts of brands available now, including fancy models that vacuum AND mop. That might be the next thing…
TubShroom
You might remember that before we left for Europe, there was an issue with our main bathtub. At one point, we thought we might have to replace the entire surround, which was not going to be cheap.
In the end, it was a relatively inexpensive fix. Such a relief!
It has been so nice having everything working again, and I swear by the TubShroom. Belle and I shed so much hair, and this thing works incredibly well at catching it before it goes down the drain.
I learned about TubShrooms from my sister who has three girls with long, curly hair.
Every few weeks, I run ours through the dishwasher to help prevent mildew. Highly recommend!
Stanley Tumbler
It was hot this week and I drank a lot of water.
I know Stanley products are kind of out of fashion these days, but it’s a good thing I don’t care very much about keeping up with trends. Mine is the Rose Quartz colour. I’ve had it for years now and still love it just as much as the day I got it! Stanley (Rose Quartz).
Bogg Bag
Another thing I use every single day is my Bogg Bag.
Here’s the deal: John bought me a knock-off version, and he can’t remember where he got it. It is 100% amazing.
I’ve linked to the branded bag because I didn’t purchase my own. Places like HomeGoods sometimes sell off-brand versions, and I think Hurley makes something similar, so keep an eye out for those as they’re likely cheaper than Bogg.
I want the same bag in a bigger size and a second small one in navy blue (a bit more versatile than bright pink).
You know I’m a minimalist at heart, so the fact that I’m contemplating buying two more should speak volumes.
I love that it has a flat bottom. I use it to carry all sorts of things: my Bible and notebook to church, my keys and wallet while running errands…
When it isn’t being used outside the house, I fill it with my planner, notebook, and pen case because I’m constantly carting those things between our dining room table and my basement office.
Pilot Juice Up 04 Pens
Speaking of pens, SHU has my undying thanks for introducing me to the Pilot Juice Up 04
These are, hands down, my favourite pens.
They do smudge a little if you try to highlight over them immediately. That said, I know SHU is left-handed and uses them, so you know the smudging isn’t terrible.
They write flawlessly.
At this point, they’re the only pens John uses and I took half a dozen with me to Europe so I would have access to them at all times.
Apple AirTags
As mentioned above, ALL our keys now have Apple AirTags (currently on sale) attached to them. John also has a wallet with a little compartment for an AirTag. (We have used AirTags for years and they link so well with our Apple devices, but there are all sorts of other similar devices out there, like Tile.)
Adhesive Door Stoppers
I can’t seem to find the original pictures of the damage, but years ago, Belle’s door handle—more specifically, the lock on the handle—made a large gouge in her wall.
I put a hook over it, and then the hook fell off and made an even bigger hole. I didn’t lose too much sleep over it because her room hadn’t been touched since we moved in and the walls were in rough shape.
Eventually, we had the wall patched when her room was painted. Within a day, Indy opened the door with gusto and, DESPITE HAVING a floor-mounted doorstopper, the handle punched another hole into the freshly repaired drywall. It was so disappointing.
I used Plasti-Tak to secure a butterfly over the hole, bought yet another doorstopper, and figured there was no point fixing it again.
When we arrived home from Europe, I immediately noticed that the same thing had happened inside our freshly painted primary bedroom.
Argh!
The hole was big enough that I didn’t want to just leave it—it was very obvious—but I also had no desire to coordinate another drywall repair.
My solution was these inexpensive adhesive rubber stoppers
So far, they have been amazing!
I needed something that would stop the door, and I wanted something that would cover the hole. Done and done.
I took down the butterfly in Belle’s room and put one over that damage, too and I plan to use them proactively in a few other places.
(I measured the hole and settled on the 2.3-inch size, but they come in several sizes and colours.)
BONUS HAPPY THINGS
- Indy received some money from my father-in-law at Christmas and hadn’t spent it yet. It was burning a proverbial hole in his pocket, and he decided to buy a new soccer ball. We typically get sporting equipment second-hand, so he was proud as punch to have a brand-new ball. I snapped a picture to send to my father-in-law of Indy posing in front of a Jacob Shaffelburg jersey. Shaffelburg is a Canadian soccer player who played in the World Cup, and he grew up in our area playing for the same soccer club Indy now plays for.
- We also organized Indy’s daily camp outfits—socks, underwear, bottoms, and a top—into individual bags so he could pull them out one day at a time. I know that when we pick him up, EVERYTHING will be a mess and need to be washed. But it felt good sending him off to camp at least quasi-organized. (At this point, Belle handles everything herself from start to finish.)
- Jana’s two posts about finding a stained glass heirloom and having it restored and installed at her house were utterly heartwarming.
- Kae, SHU, and Jenny got to hang out together in Florida last weekend. Yes, I WAS/AM JEALOUS! Also, I’m continuing to try to find a way to convince Jenny to come to Canada to run an ultra in my hometown. I’m at the point of getting other people to talk her into it…(Kae and SHU, back me up here! Nova Scotia is lovely in October, RIGHT!!!)
- Speaking of Jenny, her son gets married tomorrow, so make sure to go over to her blog and give her some love! What a big, exciting, and special day for her whole family <3

So much happy! I hate losing keys , so I’m feel your pain about the search for the car key. So great that you found it- you think that you would have heard it fall, but keys are sneaky. I’m still looking for a minivan key that went missing in the winter; I keep expecting to move just the right box or tool and it will appear. ( I think my husband used it last.) I’m big on lanyards or charms to bulk up keys to make them easy to find.
Weird place to find things: a library book under a trundle bed frame, another library book packed away in a box in the kitchen ( found it 6 months later), and my son’s wallet- found under the bed which we had checked multiple times. ( I think it had caught between beframe and mattress, then after we moved the bed around for painting weeks later, it slipped out.)
Happy things? I’m sort of in a low mood ( too much summer), but cool nights, cats, and pictures of my granddaughter on my list.

Yes, so much adulting but also it feels good to be caught up on lots of adult things. Appointments and scheduling and organizing. Stuff that’s hard to stay on top of in the regular whirlwind.
The steak was SOOOO good.
Hmmmm. October 2027 is sounding like a FUN time.
Last fall Rob was raking up the leaves and piling them into his truck to take to organic waste. We have a lot of trees, this was not the first run for him, and he has a one-ton which was filled a few times, just to give perspective. I was out with my girlfriend and when I came home he was frantic, he couldn’t find his phone. We called it and called it, I searched Find My Phone, we knew it was somewhere in the leaves, but where? It must have fallen out of his pocket early in the process because we found it FINALLY near the bottom of the pile close to the front of the truck. Sheesh. I love Air Tags, we have them on all our luggage.

So much to talk about here! The most important thing is that Jenny NEEDS to go to Nova Scotia. I mean, everyone needs to go but especially Jenny. The fall ultra has her name all over it.
I might need to do a little shopping based on this post. My tub drain doesn’t have a cover and inevitably it is starting to drain slower due to the hair issue. As a very smeary lefty, I am curious about the juice up pens.

Hubs lost one of the keys to his new car, and it stayed missing for months. One day we were riding in the car and I dropped something under the seat that I couldn’t reach so I had to wait until we got home to go fishing. I unearthed quite the treasure trove, including the key! It was in the car all the time.

I LOVE the Juice Up pens; talk to SHU about it first, because she has all the intel on using them as a lefty. The TubShroom is amazing. It works SO well. I mean, it’s kinda gross because all the hair collects and I need to empty it every time BUT all that would be going down the drain.
I told John, lost things are almost always so close to where they belong. We looked everywhere BUT in the tote right beside the keys. *Facepalm*
Oh I love to putter around the house! If I’m home alone, I’ll go do computer work, then meander to the garden, then come back in and clean, then back to the computer. Getting things done, but at my pace and as I feel like it is very relaxing and energizing to me.
Yes! Puttering is one of the things that energizes me the most. I love being able to get into a state of flow and bounce back and forth between different things, but it all feels very cohesive. LOVE IT! (And feel very seen by the fact other people feel the same way).
Stanleys aren’t cool anymore?!? I must have missed that. (I don’t own one. My favorite water bottle is the free one I got 10 years ago from a vendor my office uses).

I’m VERY happy with my 3-year old Stanley and have no plans to upgrade and switch anything out. But a free water bottle tops it all!

Happy anniversary! Your dinner looks fabulous! Yes, I do love to putter. I’m a puttering queen! How lucky that you found your keys, and I may need to consider getting some air tags.
Airtags have been great for us. They have a lot of different uses. You can get special sneakers or watch bands to put them on kids (I know parents do this when they’re travelling in big cities sometimes), John has a wallet with a special AirTag holder. And I use them for my keys!
I have a tile tag on my keys because I am prone to losing them. You know who NEVER LOSES ANYTHING? Phil! Thank goodness he doesn’t have the absent minded professor energy I have. I misplaced my keys earlier this summer but it turned out the battery on the tile had died and I did not notice! I knew the keys were in the house but couldn’t find them one morning. We had to leave before they were found and it really weighed on me – but then I figured out where they were (in a cross body bag I’d used the day before on a walk with the boys).
Happy anniversary! 17 years! I am glad the kids week away coincided with your anniversary! It’s extra nice to have time alone when you have a milestone event to celebrate. And I love that you have a restaurant you always go to. We usually go to the same restaurant which is where we went the night we got engaged (after we got engaged – no way Phil was going to propose in public!). But this year we went to an upscale pizza place since we had a gift card to use. It was kind of fun to mix it up, plus we went for a walk afterwards by a lake, but I’ll be excited to go back to our usual place next year.
AirTags play a little chime when the battery is getting low, but I’ve let it run dead a few times which is silly because then they are literally useless.
I feel like we rarely lose things, but this was a BIG loss. Special fobs are so darn expensive. All’s well that ends well.

You brighten my week. Love to putter, especially in the garden or on trails. And I once lost a pair of glasses for a whole year only to find them in my Christmas wrapping paper the next season.

Anna once zipped my keys inside another toddler’s backpack which was discovered after said toddler had left… Right after we realized it my FIL walked in with our other set because he’d just found them
at my in laws house and he figured we might need them. How we lost both sets to our only vehicle at the same time is odd! That’s probably my strangest lost key story!

The cheesecake was sooooo good. I enjoyed every bite and am already planning when I can make another one (this time for company, not just John and I!)
Once one of my sons lost his keys and he was FREAKING because he knew if we lose one copy then my husband wants to rekey the whole house for security reasons. He looked all through his room, all the other places he could think of, and then finally I said, “Have you looked in the key bowl?” Which is where DH and I put OUR keys, but our sons tend to take their keys into their bedrooms. Sure enough, there it was. Without thinking he had put it in the INTENDED PLACE for keys and it didn’t occur to him he might have done so. He still laughs about that.
My happy things, since I can’t seem to find a place to start my own comment:
Elisabeth, you converted me from Pilot Precise v5 to the Juice Up pens. They are superior in every way and I love that they’re retractable, a must going into nursing school. I am using them in the planner I won from your giveaway to manage medical appointments and all the other things going on right now!
DH officially put in his retirement papers so he can be the home manager/homeschooling parent while I go back to school! I start in January for my Associate Degree in Nursing.
One of our sons has been going through a rough medical crisis but today and yesterday he was able to use his power assist tricycle (that he had gotten before all this!) to bike around the neighborhood and get much needed sunshine and exercise! We still have a long road ahead of us but being able to do this is a huge boost to his morale.
DH is, as part of his retirement, working to reduce our costs. He gets oats in bulk for the family, but I have a wheat allergy and oats can be contaminated by wheat if they’re not grown and processed in a dedicated way. I was using Bob’s Red Mill gluten free oats, but he did some research and found La Purita–not only are they gluten free and cost less per ounce, but they don’t come in annoying, hard to close bags–instead a nice reusable container. AND they smell and taste so much nicer. It was very sweet of him to do that and I smile every time I get the container down. A silly thing to be happy about but I love oatmeal and I love that DH cared so much.
I forgot to mention that the Juice Up are retractable. I’m so glad you enjoy using them. And hooray for the Sprouted planner.

Crazy about losing the car fob. I had to replace one before, and it was $700… only to find it a few weeks later, in my husband’s truck! Arrrggghhhh.

Why are CAR FOBS SO EXPENSIVE. I mean… why is everything so expensive, but I definitely had dollar signs in my eyes while thinking about replacing it…
I love puttering. I like puttering around my house, and I like puttering in the wild. I really like going into small, independently owned businesses (like hardware or curiosity stores) and looking at all of the fun THINGS they have. I rarely buy any, but I love it. But I want to do MY puttering. My husband is right now running errands (going to buy headphones, going to buy new walking shoes, going to the grocery store) and I felt like my time would be better spent catching up on blogs!
I’m so glad about the credit card, and that you mentioned affiliate links in your post because that was what made me think of checking in with Birchie! I told my husband about your travel reimbursement yesterday, I’m going to remember that if something like that ever happens to me/us.
My current favorite pen is the Pilot Precise V5 retractable. I am going to have to give the Juice a try. No one else around here seems to care about pens, but I care enough for all of us.
We have a similar hole in our bedroom wall. I wonder if the stopper would look better than the hole? Yours looks great, but our wall is a different color and I’m not going to go shopping for paint to match a wall that was painted (looks at calculator) 19 years ago. But maybe something close is better than what we have, until we get it fixed? (Ha ha ha, it’s been this way for probably 15 years) Hmmm. Something to consider.
I do LOVE a retractable. Once you go that way, there’s no going back. Who has time to fiddle with keeping track of a lid, right??
I think some stopper brands come in a lot of different colours (and I think they’re all paintable), but it also might be way more hassle than it’s worth 🙂
Forgot to mention – regarding the Air Tags. I bought my husband a pop up card wallet for our anniversary, which he loves, and now I keep getting emails from the company about other products, one of which is a credit card sized devise that works with Find My. I’m debating getting some, though I never lose my purse. I have some AirTags that I only use for travel, but maybe I should put them on my keys. Which also, never lose, so not sure. I bought one for my MIL for her key chain, which she DOES lose, but she couldn’t remember what it was for and took it off and put it in a drawer or something. She’s 89, so we cut her some slack. It was a little frustrating when she lost her keys just a few weeks after I set up her AirTag keychain. I also had one on Mulder’s collar, but then I worried about it being close to his lymph nodes when he got lymphoma, so I took it off.
The pesky thing about trackers is they only work while attached… and when the batteries are working. I find AirTag batteries never work as well once they’ve been replaced, but I’m trying to do a better job of staying on top of it.
I think I might slip one into Belle’s wallet because she carries it a lot but not in a purse, so I feel like it’s just begging to go missing 😐

I only have Airtags for travel but having them for keys is a great idea! I’m glad you found the key fob. That would have been awful!
I looooove to putter. It’s what I do all weekend long, usually, ha!
It was so good, I’m still drooling over it. If I could snap my fingers and go back in time and relive that meal this very second, I would!!!
