This was another week that whooshed by; the hours seemed to melt away.
As part of my commitment to rest and restoration this year, the next week (or so) will be a bloggy break for no reason other than the fact it feels like a nice time to take some time “off”.
Until then, some Happy Things from this week.
BIRTHDAY SUPPER
It was my mom’s birthday recently; we were busy with various activities + John was going to be leaving for a work trip on her actual birthday…so we celebrated early with supper at our place.
I made a roast for what felt like the first time in my life – so rare for us. I made Yorkshire puddings for what is most certainly the first time in my life. It was a delicious meal – horseradish dip and whipped potatoes courtesy of John, slow-roasted carrots, roast, puddings, coleslaw, and gravy…and homemade carrot cake for dessert. It is special to be able to carve out these memories with my parents. My mom is very “low-key” and lived so many years without much celebration, so it feels nice to bring our relationship full circle and be the one baking cakes for her birthday.
MORE BIRTHDAY FUN
Both kids had birthday parties to attend on Saturday. *Side note: I feel like my kids attend about 10x the number of birthday parties I did as a child. I, admittedly, didn’t have many friends…but I also feel like friend parties are so much more common now? I try to look at it as a very special luxury but sometimes get a bit grumbly about how often we’re trying to source gifts. Thankfully A has moved into gift card territory.
Anyhoo, both kids had a delightful time. One of my birthday hacks is that I never buy cards. They get thrown away immediately so why bother? This week, I had L colour his gift so it became a built-in card. (His name was in bubble letters on the back). As a bonus, he then proceeded to spend TWO HOURS doing art projects.
A had been invited to a swanky Oscar-themed birthday party. It was like a murder mystery but minus the homicide. In this mystery, an Oscar had been stolen. The girls were to come dressed up and A loved every second of getting ready. She and her friends looked SO old. Weren’t these kids all just in diapers? The host did a phenomenal job. The parents were tasked, before leaving at dropoff, to be the paparazzi. So many fancy dresses and high heels and lipstick! An especially sweet moment for me was when someone prompted the girls to shout out “who they were wearing” expecting them to come up with fancy fashion labels like Dior and Versace and it was a chorus of Frenchys and Valu Village (the two main thrift stores locally). It made my heart sing. And yes, of course, A’s dress (and my shoes – which she wore) were thrift store finds š
VALENTINE’S DAY
Valentine’s Day is a holiday that flies below my radar. I don’t dread it, but don’t require much fanfare. This year, I hadn’t planned to get anything for the kids but at the last minute I put together tiny bags for them – a package of gum, a chocolate treat, and one Dollar Store item I knew they’d like/consume (a face roller for A who is suddenly VERY in to face care and a $4 pack of Pokemon for L). Done. They loved exchanging things with their friends at school.
For my part, I celebrated solo. John often seems to be away over Valentine’s and I don’t feel the slightest pangs of upset over that! We love each other and show it frequently and the day feels rather irrelevant to me. That said, he posted a comment on my Valentine’s post and it made me so happy. He reads every single post (okay, he skims my book review posts and may have moved quickly along through Monday’s post because he has lived it in real time!)…but he had never commented and it felt like this little cherry on top of a perfectly lovely – albeit ordinary – Valentine’s.
I got to spend some time with Jan Coates at our local coffee haunt on Valentine’s Day and she brought a treat along, so we sipped our tea and chatted…and nibbled on delicious Sea Salt Caramel chocolate.
BONUS ROUND
- Toasted quinoa. My friend Joy let me in on this little secret and it is sooo good. Toss cooked quinoa with a bit of olive oil and salt, put on a baking sheet lined with parchment, and roast – stirring occasionally – until toasted. I think it took about 30 minutes at 400F (but I can’t quite remember). It holds crunch for DAYS in a sealed container and is so, so delicious and easy. #Obsessed.
- How excited A’s bestie is over the outcome of the Superbowl; she is a HUGE Chiefs fan and even though I was rooting for the 49ers (let’s allow another team to have a chance, shall we?), it was fun to see youthful enthusiasm over the result.
- A quiet half hour at home one afternoon; L was at a playdate, A was at drama. Ahhhh.
- Picking up holds at the library. Such a privilege and delight. Two books I ordered in to complement my Year of Shmita. I already finished On The Clock and it has given me a lot of food for thought.
- A quasi-last-minute invite for supper at my parents. It was an unexpected meal I didn’t have to cook which felt like pure decadence. I played hide and seek with the kids and watched the weather report with my dad (my dad watches the weather report each evening RELIGIOUSLY). Little things that feel special because…they are! We have a little over a month left before they go home so I’m trying to make each visit count.
- A very light work-week; plus, next week is reading week at the university so it should be two consecutive “easy” weeks. Three cheers!
- Speaking of work, corporate taxes are submitted AND paid. A good feeling to have that behind me; though we did get dinged because I failed to submit tax installments I didn’t know I was supposed to submit during the year. Oops. I will NOT make the same mistake this year.
- Doing yoga every morning this week before starting my day/leaving my bedroom.
- Sunshine through windows.
- Consecutive good nights of sleep.
- A simply gorgeous afternoon on the ski hill; cold but sunny, perfect conditions, and I managed to fit in fifteen flawless runs. Plus, A was skiing with two friends…and I was there with a friend so everyone had companionship! Practically perfect in every way…
- One evening after supper while I was picking up the kitchen, the kids started playing a game of Pictionary together. They were so…content. They spend a lot of time pushing each other’s buttons but at the end of the day, the love runs deep and it’s special when I get to see it.
- Taking L and a friend to a local university basketball game with my dad. It was so funny to hear them cheering for the local players who, incidentally, are their coaches in a local basketball league. It added such a fun element to cheering when the kids know the players personally (and, obviously, admire them; they were scrambling all over the place to get high fives from the players before the game began).
- John gets home today. Yay!
Your turn. What’s your go-to birthday meal/dessert? Favourite card game? Did you watch the Super Bowl last weekend? Have you ever had toasted quinoa? Highlight of your week?

Happy Friday! It sounds like you had a great week! This will be a good week for you to take off, as it is a three day weekend and therefore a “short week” next week! I hope you have a relaxing time! A’s dress and hair look beautiful! Did she do that herself or did you do it? I would not even know where to begin to do that, plus my hair is so fine that it does not really hold a curl so I gave up trying years ago! My Mom is not girly at all and I definitely got that from her. Straight and boring, that’s me! I always envied the curly haired girls though.
I do not remember going to a lot of kids parties either. Of course, I grew up in a place with very few people, so that could be why. I am not sure if the town kids had lots of parties in those days.
The highlight of my week was (a) Galentine’s Day with my friend K and her girls A and L. It was busy as usual with sports etc. but we did get a chance to have dinner and watch one episode of Lessons in Chemistry! (b) selling some of my old camera equipment. It has been an emotional journey, but gladly, I finally sold some of my bigger pieces (camera, two lenses) that I just (sadly) do not use any more!
Elisabeth
I curled her hair (with a straightener, ironically enough). There was A LOT of hairspray involved.
Congrats on the sales – I’m sure it’s bittersweet, but if you’re not using them it’s nice to free up the space, get the cash, and presumably know they’re going on to a new life of use!!!
Nicole MacPherson
I have no idea but “murder mystery minus the homicide” is just cracking me up this morning. I can’t stop laughing. Anyway, A looks gorgeous and her hair! Ah! It’s lovely.
I wondered how your roast beef turned out and I see it turned out perfectly! Fantastic!
Suzanne clued me in to toasted quinoa with her fall salad a few months ago and I am also obsessed. I’m having a Galentines (belated) party tomorrow and all the food is red/ white/ pink themed (or thereabouts) so I am making a bruschetta quinoa salad and I think I will toast half the quinoa. Won’t that be fun? I mean, I hope it will be good, I have never tried it.
It sounds like you had an absolutely fantastic week. Mine started off kind of weird – R had a colonoscopy – but it appeared to be normal (fingers crossed) so yay for that. I mean, it wasn’t the nicest start to the week, I had to be up at 3 with him, which is early even for me, but we’re (hopefully?) on the other side for at least a year so yay. The rest of the week has been much better (I mean the bar was pretty low) (shitty) (lol) (sorry, it’s early)
Enjoy your bloggy break!
Elisabeth
Ha! She kept calling it a murder mystery…but then I learned there was no murder. So it was just a…mystery??
The roast meal was soooo good.
Toasted quinoa is like the newest best thing I’ve heard about in 2024. So delicious and I’m especially enamoured with the way it stays crispy for so long. It’s like magic!
Poor R – not a fun way to start the week, but good to have that behind you and obviously those diagnostics are soooo important. Gold stars for getting something unpleasant done. Onward and upward. Enjoy that Galentines party; it sounds AMAZING.
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie
Enjoy your “blogging PTO”. We will miss you, but guess what, we’ll still be here when you come back!
I’m taking note of On the Clock. It sounds right up my alley.
Elisabeth
I think you’d be fascinated. It wasn’t the best book I’ve ever read (didn’t love the author’s tone sometimes), but it was really, really interesting and left me with a lot of “food for thought.”
PamDDO
Maybe we should toast the quinoa at 400F instead of C? Sounds delicious though.
Elisabeth
YES! You are so right. Sorry. Definitely Farenheit; thanks for pointing this out and I changed it in the blog post š
Jenny
What a nice week! Yes, A does look grown up, and I LOVE her hair! I’m seriously envious, since I have a daughter who seems to feel that “crazy hair day” should be 365 days a year.
I’m loving all the time you spend with your parents. You are so fortunate to still have them, and have them nearby (for now) and to get along with them so well! I gave Angie a little Valentine’s Day gift bag (complete with chocolate scratch and sniff stickers!) and she was a little mopey about not having a “real” Valentine this year- I was thinking “someday you’ll look back and realize a mother’s love is the most precious one of all!” Ha ha… obviously I didn’t say that out loud.
I’ll miss you, but I hope you have a relaxing and restful week!
Elisabeth
Ha. A is pretty low-key about hair, but enjoyed having it curled for this special occasion. And hair is a great form of expression and it seems like Angie gets a lot of joy out of standing out from the crowd?
There was MUCH talk about crushes in our household this week, but thankfully the kids are still contented to get gifts from Mom (and A exclusively exchanged with girls, though…again…SO MUCH CRUSH TALK!)
Lindsay
I hope you have the best blog break next week!
My go-to birthday meal is apple pie for breakfast and the opportunity to have either crispy French fries or movie theater popcorn during the day; it really is the little things for me. I love a game of rummy. We watched the Super Bowl, the Mr. is an American football fan; well, Lil Momma went to bed after halftime. I LOVE TOASTED QUINOA! #teamtextureforever The highlight of my week was curling up with Lil Momma last night and her catching me up on her day and her heart <3 just what we both needed!
Elisabeth
What a unique birthday meal! Apple pie for breakfast; a first for me. But sounds DELISH.
Aww. Sounds like a great time of bonding and connection. Bedtime/nighttime seems to be the best for that, hands down.
Isn’t toasted quinoa like…the best?!
Suzanne
I am very interested in your Shmita books! That “Make Time” book looks appealing and (potentially) helpful. LOVE the Oscar party! What a fantastic idea! And A’s hair and whole look are spectacular. Very red carpet ready.
So glad John is returning. You are doing such a great job, Elisabeth.
Elisabeth
I’m about 1/2 way through Make Time and I’ve gotten some good ideas. Nothing earth-shattering, but a very easy, pleasant read which is lovely!
And thanks for the encouragement. I realized I am EXHAUSTED today and was like…oh, yeah. End of a solo week!
Daria
Enjoy your blogging break!! Highlight of my week? A few… Valentine’s day at my kids’ schools, so cute. A social hour with colleagues from my district- we had quite a turnout! It was wonderful to hang out with people I work with and actually get to talk to them outside of work.
Elisabeth
Those are great highlights from the week! Enjoy the weekend – I hope it’s restful and fun š
Colleen Martin
Your week sounded wonderful! I feel like there are years where my kids have birthday parties all the time, then it kinda stops. Right now my 2nd grader and 4th grader are in the lots of parties years. Happy break from blogging, and good for you for keeping up with the yoga routine!
Elisabeth
Daily yoga is just…wonderful! I’m so proud of myself and I “crave” it now!
Lisa's Yarns
Toasted quinoa sounds delicious! I will have to make that when I get back into having salads for lunch (still feeling burned out from them).
We usually get take out Indian food for my birthday but this year it was super mild so Phil grilled ahi tuna steaks which were delicious! We had a nice meal out the previous weekend so didn’t feel like we wanted/needed take out. We did get take out on Wednesday for Vday, though.
We are figuring out Paul’s birthday party right now. He hasn’t been invited to any parties this year! So I don’t know if kids aren’t having them or he isn’t invited? We’ve decided to invite 4-5 friends over and they will put together a lego set together and have some sort of desert. I’m trying to track down the parent’s email addresses now which is tricky. 3 of the friends have their contact info on the google sheet that a classroom mom created. I had to ask permission for the teacher to share the other 2. I hope that Paul doesn’t talk about his party at school and hurt the feeling of those that won’t be invited, but there are 20 kids in his class and 13 boys so can’t invite everyone or invite all of the girls. Also the girl/boy ratio is very odd… his daycare classes were predominantly boys, too, and now Taco’s class at school is predominantly boys!!
Elisabeth
The toasted quinoa is soooo good. I think you’ll like it, and I’m really impressed how it stays crunchy and doesn’t go chewy even days later!
Michelle
The Oscar-themed party sounds like so much fun for the girls, and A looked gorgeous! That’s such a great idea for a party! The roast looks delicious. That’s one of my favorite meals with slow-roasted carrots, potatoes, etc.
I hope you have a lovely blog break!
Elisabeth
I need to make roasts more often. It WAS delicious, and the house smelled amazing!
Allison
I hope this is the dumbest part of my commet – I stared at that plate picture for so long wondering why you would have roast beef AND tiny weiners, before realizing the tiny weiners were carrots. Whew. A friend always makes a basket of tiny Yorkshire puddings for our Robbie Burns party and it reminds me that I mean to make them more often.
I feel the same about Valentine’s Day, but if my husband is home we usually get dinner from somewhere because I feel like I might regret it if we did nothing. Happy with that decision so far. Also will bake heart cookies for when my daughter comes home for Reading Week.
Nicole mentioned crispy quinoa recently also, and I was so excited – I love it on salads!
I love the girls calling out thrift store names for their dresses!
Elisabeth
Somehow I missed Nicole blogging about this…I’m just glad I arrived at the crispy quinoa party because it is AMAZING!
Haha – yeah, I can see that the carrots do look a bit like those little cocktail weiners. That would be an odd combo, though š
I’d never had – or made – Yorkshire puddings. My kids like a related pancake recipe, but this was a first for me and a BIG hit.
Maria
That birthday dinner looks delicious! Well done!
So, your parents spend winter in the maritimes? Their summer home must be a colder part of Canada! š There must not be that many people who āsnowbirdā TO NS.
Have a great blog break!
Elisabeth
Ha. Their summer home is in New Brunswick. Which, ironically, has had less snow than we have this winter I think?
Not the typical snowbird destination, but they live in the middle of the woods on Grand Lake with a super long driveway and lots of wind and drifts, so coming to a rental here with solar panels, heat pumps, and a very short driveway is a big upgrade. Plus, my dad takes classes at the local university (he can walk to/from class), and it’s where the grandkids are…
We LOVE having them nearby, but of course love going to their home on the lake in the summer.
J
Thanks for letting us know youāre taking a blog break, I would have worried since you post so consistently. I tend to blow it off sometimes, so if no one sees a post from me for a couple of weeks itās not a big deal. š
The Oscar party looks like fun, and your daughter looks beautiful. Her hair is #goals, for sure. My hair is so straight, even when we curl it and put in hair spray it rarely lasts more than an hour.
I didnāt intend to do anything for Valentineās Day, but then Wednesday morning I decided that I wanted to, so I made a nice dinner and bought desert (we donāt usually have desert) and my husband gave us flowers, so it was really nice.
Elisabeth
I mentioned it because people have sent me e-mails before when I’ve been on a “break” so I wanted to make it nice and clear that all is well. Just a week or so off from writing.
Sounds like a lovely Valentine’s…and sometimes those more spontaneous/unplanned celebrations are even more special!

Happy Weekend Elisabeth.
All those happy moments sound like a very full week. Just reading left me a bit exhausted.
A’s birthday party sounds like really fun but what a huge endeavor to set up on the moms part. Wow. My birthday parties were some games and that was that.
What a sweet thing of John to comment on the valentines post.
Elisabeth
Ha! I was so exhausted I took a 1.5 hour nap THIS MORNING. Like an hour after I woke up I was getting ready to go back to bed. It felt incredible. It was a really, really busy week with early mornings and late nights every single day. Not sustainable, but we made the most of it.
Katie
This is just gorgeous, Elisabeth. Your posts always make me want to just step into your life, grab a cup of tea with you and hang out š
The highlight of my week has been taking A on her long-awaited trip to Peppa Pig World, where she met Peppa and George in a meet and greet. Her delight was fabulous!
Elisabeth
Awww. I really wish we could easily hang out, too! A cup of tea together sounds LOVELY. Maybe a local woods walk with Coco along?!
Peppa Pig World looked so fun (especially the pancake/waffle scene)!
Maria
Iām not sure if Iām replying to your reply to my first comment or if itās starting a new comment threadā¦ anyway itās supposed to be a reply to your reply! Iāve never been to Grand Lake but my neighbours across the street camp up there all the time and rave about it. We definitely have had less snow than NS, at least here in coastal NB. Itās been a strangely sunny winter. No one wants to exactly complain about it but people are commenting on it and the lack of snow. My almost 4 year old keeps telling me itās clearly not actually winter because thereās not enough snowā¦ We had SO MUCH rain this summer and it feels like all the sun we should have had this summer has come this winter. Nothing beats a sunny winter beach walk!
Elisabeth
It’s crazy – NB usually has TONS of snow this time of year.

Highlight of the week: I had a doctor’s appointment on Wednesday where I got a tetanus vaccine. I was fine on Wednesday, but by Thursday night I was in a bad vaccine reaction spot. I woke up on Friday and was feverish and the entire world was spinning. Hear me out, though. I was able to just call in sick and GO BACK TO BED. For an entire day! It was, to be honest, a really good feeling. I had no guilt about calling in sick (I was) and the rest felt so good. I can’t believe my highlight was a sick day, but it was amazing and I felt like 75% normal by Saturday morning.
I like a cupcake on my birthday. I don’t need a whole cake, but a cupcake or two is the perfect treat!
Elisabeth
Oh, I get this 100%. Being sick CAN feel like a much-needed vacation. I’m sorry you had such a rough reaction, but YAY you could call in sick…which makes it an extra long weekend. Hope you’re feeling completely better by now.
Cupcakes are the perfect size (well, as long as I can have two…)
Ernie
Hope your enjoying your blog break. I’m a bit late getting here. We don’t do much for Valentine’s Day either. I love your kids playing a game together. When our kids were younger, I felt like all we did was buy gifts for other kids’ birthdays. We aren’t into having big b-day parties for the kids. They each had one or two kid parties, but not a yearly thing. I found it a little silly and was glad when we moved past that phase. My favorite birthday dinner is a filet at an awesome steak place near home. Glad you are enjoying time with your parents.
San
Both L and A look so grown up in these pictures all of a sudden, woah.
I always love reading about your happy moments. It’s good to find them and focus them every week, but especially during harder ones. It’s so delightful to read that you could just pop over to your parents for dinner. I know you’re savoring this special time of having them close by.
My go-to birthday dessert is a marble cake that my mom always made for my sister’s and my birthday and I’ve been keeping that tradition over the years. I cannot wait to bake it again soon (my birthday is coming up again!).
Elisabeth
Yum. I haven’t had marble cake in…years, but used to LOVE making them as a kid.
I know – aren’t they so big?! I can’t believe the changes in their faces (and heights) this year.
Anne
YES to apple pie for breakfast.
I need to try toasted quinoa. You… store it in the fridge? And it stays crispy? Really? I’m intrigued…
Elisabeth
I just store it in a covered container on the counter. It seems to stay crispy for…A REALLY long time (like I have stuff that’s almost a week old). It’s so dried out from the roasting that it doesn’t go bad.
