Hot on the heels of another Never Have I Ever post, here are some more things I have actually done!
- Gone more than 48 hours without food. (I did a 5-day…maybe I only made it to 4?…spiritual fast. It was supposed to be a full week. The spirit was willing, but the stomachā¦not so much.)
- Walked across a suspension bridge. (Multiple times.)
- Been to Disney. (This year, outside of Paris.)
- Been in a bumper car. (My adult neck would say a very emphatic No, thank you.)
- Harvested and eaten dulse. (It’s a local delicacy and I grew up picking and drying it as a kid.)
- Received acupuncture treatment.
- Cut down a tree with a handsaw.
- Camped on a beach. (Multiple times; one memorable occasion I saw the most beautiful starry night of my life.)
- Seen the Northern Lights. (Once in Ottawa as a teen, and more recently in Nova Scotia.)
- Made homemade pasta.
See also: Actually, I *Have* Done That.
Your turn.
- How many of my āEver Eversā have you done?
- Has anyone heard of dulse before?
- I’ve helped make homemade pasta twice; does anyone prepare it regularly?

Only #2,3,4.
You fasted that long? I can’t imagine that was very easy or healthful.
#2 – Capilano Suspension Bridge in BC. #3 – Disney World as a kid- C ticket to go on the decent rides…
#4 – some amusement parks- I’m not a fan or roller coasters or scary rides- also happy to do bumper cars.
I’m also NOT a fan of most rollercoasters. Though I think bumper cars would destroy my neck at this stage of life.
1. Gone more than 48 hours without food. Not totally without food, but I have done a couple of milk “fasts” before operations – basically you can have 4 pints of milk a day, a salty drink (Bovril in the UK) plus unlimited water in each 24 hours. Both times were for nearly 2 weeks.
2. Walked across a suspension bridge – a couple of times, but as I don’t have agreat head for heights it is not something I am hoping to do again!
3. Been to Disney – Florida 4 times š The last of which was this year – so good.
4. Been in a bumper car – many times when the fair would come round but not in the last couple of decades
5. Harvested and eaten dulse – is this seaweed? never harvested but may have eaten it as part of a meal.
6. Received acupuncture treatment – not done this.
7. Cut down a tree with a handsaw – yep, done this a couple of times. Will need to hack off a branch from the apple tree on my allotment after I’ve harvest the apples as it is too close to the ground and covers a good amount of growing space.
8. Camped on a beach – not technically on the beach, but by the side of one
9. Seen the Northern Lights – never seen them but it is on my bucket list
10. Made homemade pasta – several times but always revert back to using shop-bought dried pasta. (they make a lot more interesting shapes than I can)
Wow – 2 weeks on a liquid diet sounds hard! I’ve never heard of one that long for surgery prep.
Dulse is a form of (red) seaweed. It’s delicious. Homemade pasta is enough work and mess I’m not inclined to do it myself. My brother enjoys making it, so I’ve done it with him twice. It’s delicious, but dried pasta is also great š
The most recent thing that I have done on this list is to walk across a suspension bridge! You’ll hear all about it in my next post about the BC trip.
I saw the northern lights last year from our neighborhood park. It was a special time.
How did your homemade pasta turn out? The first time that I tried it was my last time. It was a lot of trouble and not good.
Ohhh. I just read your post and it looks fun (and also a bit terrifying, if I’m being honest).
The homemade pasta was good, but not good enough I’d want to go to all the trouble myself!
Oh, I had to google dulse – it looks really interesting! Do you not harvest or eat it anymore? Is it only found around the area where you grew up?
Iāve also never seen the Northern Lights, but thatās definitely on my bucket list!
I love making homemade pasta too, though I usually save it for visitors since it can get a bit messy (or I’m just too lazy…)
It’s only available in certain spots (I grew up close to a beach where it was possible to harvest dulse and then we would dry it on our roof)! It’s quite expensive to buy AND it’s much better if you can buy it off someone who harvests it as the stuff you buy in stores is not nearly as good. My mom has a friend who sometimes brings her dulse and so I have a small bag of it at home in my freezer. (It keeps fresh in the freezer for a long time).
I’ve done 1,2,3, 8, and 9. I have NEVER gone more than a day without food. Actually I don’t even think I’ve gone one day without food!
I don’t do it regularly. I’ve definitely gone days without food when I’ve had a bad flu bug. I enjoyed doing the spiritual fast but it was HARD.
I haven’t done many of these! Yes to 2,3,4 and 6. I think the longest I’ve fasted is 24 hours. There’s a chance I’ve made my own pasta- but if I did, it was a looooong time ago (and I may have blocked it out of my mind).
I’m obviously a very nosy person because i’m enjoying reading people’s comments to see which of these they’ve done!
It is very fun to see what other people have/haven’t done! I’m nosy too which is part of the reason I love reading blogs. It’s like people watching friends š
I’ve done bumper cars a few times and hated it. Never again! I’ve been to Disney World in Orlando three times. Otherwise, I don’t think I’ve done any of those. I’ve had seaweed, but not dulse.
I didn’t love bumper cars as a kid – so jarring, and I would HATE them now.
Not very many, Elisabeth. I’ve been to Disney World and I’ve done bumper cars. I tried numerous times to see the Northern Lights when they were visible here but they were not visible to me, lol.
The Northern Lights are beautiful; I would really love to see them from up North, as I know they can be much brighter and intense. But I’m so glad I’ve seen them further south at least.
I’ve been to Disney (Florida) many times as a child. I’ve been in a bumper car, but also as a kid when my neck was nice and strong. š
I’ve never heard of dulse before. (GOOGLING) Oh, it’s seaweed? Nope. No thank you! I tried some organic seaweed crackers earlier this year and I couldn’t get them out of my mouth soon enough.
Last night, I had a few nibbles of Gator bites from my husbands plate. Tastes like chicken!
Camping on a starry beach sounds like heaven!
I read “organic seaweed crackers” and literally the first thing that popped into my head was “That sounds amazing! I want to try those.”
I have never had Gator bites; I’ll take your word that they taste like chicken.
That starry beach was one of my best childhood memories. My dad and I went camping together. We laid out under the stars and listening to the Toronto Blue Jays baseball game on the radio. It was magical.
I’ve done #2, 3, 4, and 7. We used to get a Christmas tree from a farm every year and we’d chop them down with a hand axe. Now we have a fake tree and it’s easier, but a lot less fun.
My kids (especially Belle) are APPALLED I made the switch to artificial last year. I loved it. Does it smell as good? No. Does it look quite as good? No. DOES IT FALL OVER? No. Does it drop needles? No. Does it cost as much money? No.
I think I’m an artificial girl for life, now.
I’ve never been to a Disney resort and probably unlikely to, nor have I ever gone willingly gone without food for any length of time. Though I have gone 2-3 days without food from health issues.
As for dulce? I had to Google it to see what it was and then, realising it was seaweed, thought ‘Oh, I’ve eaten seaweed.’ Not that I’ve ever harvested any myself.
And cutting down an entire tree with a handsaw? Are you crazy?
It’s a unique type of red seaweed. It’s good! Quite chewy and salty, not like nori which tends to dissolve a bit on the tongue.
I don’t know what dulse is, so no. I’ve not gone that long without food. I think I would die. I’ve been to Disney and walked across a suspension bridge. I’ve not made pasta, camped on a beach, or had acupuncture – but Coach has dry needled me as a PT thing that I believe is similar. It makes me cry and he always tells me that crying is not necessary and I’m the only person that does that. But, that’s who I am. I gross out easily and it makes me upset. Coach has used a hand saw to cut down our Christmas tree. I stand there and hold the tree, so I don’t think that counts.
Dry needling sounds scary to me. Eeks. Does it help? If not, I’d skip it. Life is too short for crying over something like that.
Hey – every tree cutter needs a spotter, so you have a very important job. I’ll give you partial points for it š
Iāve only done accupuncture and I hated it so much, I canāt bear to try it again. I did it when I was pregnant with Paul in the hopes it would help with my terrible RA issues. It did not and the whole process sucked (I was so dang cold). But others swear by it!
I didn’t love it. It actually did hurt quite a bit of the time. But she put a heat lamp on my back and I loved that. She told me that I would probably fall asleep because many people do and I definitely DID NOT. I tried it a few times and I didn’t notice much improvement in symptoms (some sleep/migraine issues). But I’d try it again if I had coverage for that sort of thing I think?
Of these I have only done the suspension bridge, bumper cars, Disney and handmade pasta. I have heard of dulse but had no idea what it was so I did a quick Google. I’ve only made homemade pasta once (in Bologna) but I do make gnocchi semi-regularly.
Ohhh. I’ve never made gnocchi, but this reminds me that I’ve been meaning to try it. Maybe something new to try this fall once we get back into a more regular food prep routine?? I’ll reach out if I have questions š
It was keyhole abdominal surgery. The fast cleansed the liver making it less solid and easier to move out of the way!
The first time was harder, the second time I’d already done it once so knew I could do it again.
I’ll change my answer for dulse to no – I’ve eaten some type of seaweed but not a red one.
That’s fascinating about the impact of a specific liquid diet on the texture/pliability of your liver!
**I’ve done the swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain (I think it’s suspension?)
**Went to Disney the summer I turned 7, only remember getting a massive migraine, and have never been back, lol
**Mr and I made homemade pasta for Valentine’s while dating, and thoroughly enjoyed it/plan to do again
**We actually got to see the Northern Lights TWICE last year, all the way down in North Carolina! First in May (https://thefarmwifereads.com/2024/05/14/auroras-in-carolina/) and again in October (https://thefarmwifereads.com/2024/10/15/the-skies-are-showing-off/) Definitely a major highlight of the year, and so amazing to check the bucket list item off from the comfort of home! š
I can see how a trip to Disney could bring on a migraine! Thankfully, that didn’t happen to any of us, but some of those rides. Yikes. Also…I suspect there is A LOT OF vomiting š One too many hot dogs + roller coasters.
Awww. What a sweet Valentine’s activity.
Those night-sky pictures are AMAZING. I especially liked the one with the tractor in the foreground. Wow. If we want to feel humble (and amazed) look at just how vast and gorgeous the universe is…
2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, yeppers.
Disneyland is about 4 hours away, but Iām done with it (last visit maybe 35 years ago).
Bumper cars scared me to death as a kid. I sat there in one place and cried until the time ran out. Makes me kind of want to try it as an adult who loves to drive winding mountain roads in a manual transmission car!
Acupuncture didnāt hurt at all, but it didnāt cure diddly squat either.
Iāve cut down many trees with a handsaw because oaks are like weeds on the hill behind our house. I have to sneak this activity because it bugs my husband. . . he doesnāt want to fire up his chainsaw and thinks all those trees are just fine, but Iām always thinking about ādefensible spaceā.
When we had a camper shell on our pickup, we parked on the beach to sleep. The open door on the shell funneled the wave sounds in and it became deafening after a few hours. Learned that just sleeping on the sand is a much better option. š
We slept in a cabin on the beach a few years ago and I could not get over how loud the waves were. One might think it sounds lovely (white noise and all) but I found it very distracting and actually turned on the white noise app on my phone to drown out the waves!
I think I’d get whiplash from bumper cars now š My neck can be finicky.
This is fun. For me itās 4, 9 and 10. I have fasted 40 hours for the 40 Hour Famine to raise money to combat world poverty in the 90s- but not 48 hours- thatās impressive! I helped my talented SIL make fresh pasta- it was fun. I love bumper cars- went on them with the kids just this year. And I saw the Northern lights when I lived in Norway- though Iād love to go up above the arctic circle and see them there for a more spectacular experience.
Iād love to go camping on the beach one day. And go to Disney! When the kids are older. Maybe in Japan.
I had forgotten all about 40-Hour famine. I never did it, but our church used to host a group of teens that did it!
Yes, seeing the Northern Lights up North is a whole other experience, I’m sure.
Ooh! I only have TWO here. I’ve been to Disney (many times, Florida girl here!) and been in a bumper car.
I tried doing one of those church fasts when I was in middle school but I barely made it 12 hours, lol. My mom found me sleeping in my room at like 4pm and was like, “Okay, maybe we consider another way to fast that isn’t food.” Wise woman!
Ha!
Yes, I remember reading something about someone who could not fast for medical reasons and she highlighted that food is just one idea. Now, in some ways, it feels like my kids would notice something like a fast on technology more than food. Then again, the rate they seem to be hungry these days (approximately every 10 minutes), maybe not!
I have done 1, 8 and 10. I used to do annual fasting for a week or longer but then stopped when I had some huge migraine attacks. Maybe I need to give it an another try. It is such a great feeling and a true reset for the body.
It was difficult to fast that long, but I think we’ve lost something with removing it from our regular spiritual habits. It was a big part of the early church and I can see why it was so effective in terms of focussing the mind and really impacting someone spiritually. It was HARD!
