I’ve stayed overnight in hostels countless times! I’ve made lots of things with label-makers for work, taken a hop-on hop-off bus a few times and went whale watching in Norway 🙂 I haven’t personally used a DNA ancestry kit but my mother has.
I really want to do the hop-on-hop-off bus. It sounds like a great way to view a new city!
I have only made freezer jam, which doesn’t involve boiling things or elaborate processes, so maybe half credit for 8.
Nothing else.
My sister did use one of those DNA kits, so I know the result (83% Irish descent with the rest western European). However, we knew that already! (Irish, French, German ancestors all relatively recent on the family tree). I guess I’ll take another half credit for 10.
You’ve been on a motorcycle? Brave!
I didn’t DRIVE the motorcycle, though. That I am definitely NOT brave enough to do.
The only thing I’ve done is whale watching – but then again, not really, because we simply see the whales in Cape Town without going on a “watching” expedition.
Just a few weeks ago there was a whole pod of Humpback whales swimming around. I see dolphins nearly every day when I go on my runs and there’s a few seals living in our bay where we live. Sometimes they fight each other, and then they make a lot of barking noises, similar to dogs.
That’s SO COOL that you see dolphins regularly. I’ve only seen them a handful of times in my life. I’ve definitely seen lots of seals, though. And their barking can get so loud!
I love the accidental ten fold increase in these posts via typo at the beginning 😂
Tried caviar. – Nope! Don’t want to either to be honest.
Taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. – Nope
Completed an escape room. – Once
Been inside a sensory deprivation tank. – uhhhh no and no thanks
Created something with a label maker. – maybe? My mom had one and I’m sure I asked to type some thing on it as a teenager but I don’t remember for sure
Ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle. (I have ridden on the back of one.) – no and zero desire to do so
Stayed overnight in a hostel. – nope
Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.)
– YES! Many many times
Gone whale watching.- once and it was fun!
Used a DNA ancestry kit. – nope and don’t intend to
So I meant the 150 = 15 x 10 🙂
I’m so curious about a sensory deprivation tank!
It does not surprise me you’re a wizard with preserves!
I really should go whale watching as we live in a great place to do so.
I’ve done a few of these: caviar (it tasted like salt to me), hop on/off bus (we’ve done it a number of times while visiting cities like San Diego and Washington DC), label maker (we had one growing up), whale watching (almost 10 years ago to the day today in Maui). I highly recommend the bus and whale watching!
I would love to try a bus tour; maybe when we’re in London?
And I really should also try whale watching as we have lots of opportunities not too far from where we live.
I would definitely recommend doing one in London. There a few taking different routes round the city; they are so informative.
I’ve done a few of these things- I went on a whale watching boat near Boston (although we didn’t see any! So maybe that doesn’t count!)
I’ve been making jam and pickles for about ten years now. It’s one of those things that I don’t feel like doing in the moment, but I really enjoy and appreciate it the rest of the year! I suppose a lot of grown up responsible things are like that. Hmm.
What is a sensory deprivation tank? It sounds kind of horrible?!
Darn! How frustrating to go on a whale watching expedition and not see any.
A sensory deprivation tank is usually pitch black, with warm water filled with salt that is also sound proof. I wonder if I’d love it or hate it???
I believe in the future of the Never Have I Ever series! Let’s see…I got to try caviar once, and IMO it was overrated. I’ve played a board game version of an escape room and it was so boring that I never want to go to a real one.
I’ve never been in a sensory deprivation tank and it’s not on my list, but a few years ago my husband went with his best friend. They liked it but I haven’t heard of any plans to repeat it.
I make pickled onions fairly frequently, but that’s just covering sliced onions with water and vinegar, so I don’t think it counts. But they are delicious and they last for a few weeks in the fridge.
I have zero desire to do an escape room!
My pickling is adding vinegar and salt to sliced cucumbers and letting them sit for about 15 minutes. It’s delicious!
Well, this is a first- I haven’t done ANY of these!!! If I could choose one to do, I would try the sensory deprivation tank- I’d like to see what that’s like. Caviar looks so gross, it kind of makes my hair stand on end.
Yes, caviar doesn’t really appeal to me. Especially given the price…
I have done 3 of these!
Created something with a label maker = One year, I think when I turned 9? Maybe 10? I got a label maker for my birthday and it was the coolest thing ever! I could swap out the label colors and I labeled everything, lol
Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.) = Mr and I have made strawberry jam the last two years (it makes a fabulous Christmas present for extended family), and we also can tomatoes. Tried making pickles but they were too sweet, lol … We want to try a few other kinds of jam this year – including pepper jelly, from our nadapeno peppers!
Used a DNA ancestry kit. = I did this several years ago, and it started a chain reaction, with my parents and grandparents following suit, lol
A label maker as a tween would be SO FUN! I can see Belle loving this.
I have done two of those things you mentioned, I have made jam and done the hop on, hop off tour bus! I would like to do most of the others, especially whale watching.
Jam is delicious but it seems like SO MUCH WORK (and honestly, not much of a cost savings).
I feel like maybe a Hop On-Hop Off in London would be fun…
You need to try a Hop On/Hop Off bus around a big City. It shows you things you would never think of and stops at all the tourist destinations that you want to go to. Plus they tell stories and history of those places that you don’t hear at the destination. The best one we have ever been on is in Dublin, Ireland. And if you sit up top in the front row, you will be amazed at how these bus drivers get around those small lanes. Scary and amazing at the same time!
We’ve also done Hop On/Hop Off in Edinbrough, Paris, Munich and a boat around Amsterdam. In May we will try in Athens.
And most of the Hop On/Hop Off buses tickets come when you buy a City Pass to see the attractions in that particular City.
I was thinking of doing it in London, but Munich could be fun, too!!!! Or Edinbrough. I need to do some research on this.
These posts are so fun! I haven’t tried caviar and never will (1), I took a hop-on, hop-off bus in London and it was an excellent way to see the city (2). I’ve attempted an escape room but we did not complete it (3). I haven’t done 4 or 5, but a friend made a label for my new Owala bottle since I have absent minded professor-energy (and it’s already come in useful as I left my water bottle at OTF last month – they complimented me on having it labeled!). I’ve never done 6 and never will. I stayed in hostels when I studied abroad and when I went to Germany and the Czech Republic in 2004 when my friend and I were poor post-college students (7). I made jam when I was in 4H and have made refrigerator pickles (8). I’ve never done 9 but would love to some day. And I did a DNA ancestry kit – 23 and me (10).
Oh my goodness, Indy loses EVERYTHING. I put labels on so much stuff, but just with masking tape. Not nearly as cute or pretty as a label maker, I’m sure!
I’m definitely going to consider doing Hop On/Hop Off in London! Seems like a great place to do it, and we’ll be there at the beginning of June, so the weather should be pretty nice.
Tried caviar. YEP!
Taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. Not that I can recall . ..
Completed an escape room. YEP! FUN!
Been inside a sensory deprivation tank. NO.
Created something with a label maker. OMG YES.
Ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle. (I have ridden on the back of one.) NO.
Stayed overnight in a hostel. YES.
Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.) NO
Gone whale watching. YES. So cool. In Vancouver and Boston.
Used a DNA ancestry kit. YES
6/10 yes! I’ve never been so high on one of your surveys 🙂
Why does the label maker not surprise me? Hahaha.
I have not done may of those things, Elisabeth but I have made pickles! I make a big jar of sun pickles every summer (thanks to friends and neighbors with a surplus of cucumbers). I make enough jars to get me through until the next summer, plus a couple to give away. Last summer I also tried sweet freezer pickles. They were good, but I love dill the best 🙂
I’ve never heard of sun pickles. I assume it’s a bit like sun tea where things get left to “steep” outside in the sun??
Ooh! I think this might be my record for number of things on your list that I HAVE done!
1) I ate caviar as part of my 30 Before 30 bucket list. Once was enough!
2) When we lived in Rome, the girls were obsessed with the hop-on, hop-off tour buses. Finally, the second year we lived there, we decided to take a spin on one for Greta’s birthday! It was super fun and actually showed us some parts of the city we hadn’t visited before.
3) Never tried an escape room. I think it would be fun but I’m not too confident in my ability to actually escape!
4) My friend has a membership to a sensory deprivation float spa and my other friends and I joined her once (all in individual tanks). It was relaxing but I kept thinking “I could be reading a book right now…”
5) Never used a label maker.
6) Never ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle.
7) Nick and I stayed in a hostel in Amsterdam about a year after we were married. It was actually quite nice!
8) I’ve made refrigerator pickles, if those count? Never tried actual canning.
9) Never gone whale watching which is surprising, having grown up in Seattle!
10) My mom gifted DNA kits to all of my siblings and I one Christmas, which was fun and of course prompted a lot of good natured joking about “finding out who was secretly adopted”. The surprise was finding out we have much more Swedish heritage than we thought (considering I never knew we had any Swedish ancestry!).
That’s so fun that caviar was on your 30 before 30!
Okay, you’ve convinced me that we MUST DO A HOP ON/HOP OFF BUS while in Europe!!!!
“I could be reading a book right now.” Now that you mention it, I bet that would be my exact response, too!
I’ve heard some hostels can be beautiful!
You can pry my label maker out of my cold dead hands. I mean sure, I can just use painter’s tape and Sharpie, but the label maker gives me so. much. joy. And it makes everything look pretty and uniform, like it just belongs. My label-maker is right up there with my laminator in things I love but only use three times a year.
But as for everything else:
Tried caviar. – YES
Taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. – YES, in Kuala Lumpar.
Completed an escape room. – No. The idea of being stuck somewhere with a task to do before I can leave makes me hyperventilate.
Been inside a sensory deprivation tank. – No. Fascinating. But also see above.
Created something with a label maker. –
Ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle. (I have ridden on the back of one.) – No.
Stayed overnight in a hostel – Yes. In college my roommates and I went to Paris for a week and stayed in a hostel.
Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.) – Not precisely – I’ve done refrigerator pickles and I’ve canned peaches and tomatoes.
Gone whale watching. – once in San Diego we went on a kayaking whale watching tour. We did not see whales.
Used a DNA ancestry kit. – No. I have reservations about my information being sent to a big company.
I’m pretty sure one of my Never Have I Evers in the past has been “Never laminated anything.” I need to come visit you so you can show me the wonders of label-making and laminating.
A kayaking whale-watching tour. Cool… and also I think I might be terrified one would knock me out of my kayak.
Now that I think of it, we did also do it in London. But being that London also has double decker buses, be sure to sit up top in the front! Just once.
And I loved London and want to go back. We loved the British Museum, but the Imperial War Museum was very, very cool. A lot of WWII information. Also The Tower of London where the crown jewels are was very, very interesting. Luckily we were there on the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s ascension day (or the day that King George died). They had a 21 gun salute and all the Beefeaters were in their dress uniforms. It was very loud and very neat!
Noted! This is making me extra excited for London.
Thanks for the suggestions. Tower of London is definitely on my list. I think the kids will love it. My dad is a history buff and LOVED the War Museum and all things related to Churchill and the war. I’ll see how much of that sort of thing I can convince the kids to do…
Tried caviar. Yes and agree that it is highly overrated.
Taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. Does a trolley count in New Orleans? If so, yes.
Completed an escape room. No
Been inside a sensory deprivation tank. No. I am a bit claustrophobic so I don’t think I will ever do it.
Created something with a label maker. Yes, many times at work.
Ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle. (I have ridden on the back of one.) Not a sidecar but on the back many times with my husband driving. We just bought a trike so that will increase in the future.
Stayed overnight in a hostel. No.
Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.) Yes many. Jam, pickles, canned tomatoes, relish.
Gone whale watching. Yes. We saw many ,many whales. It was awesome.
Used a DNA ancestry kit. not me, but my sister. I don’t want to waste money on that.
I’ll give you half points for the trolley car 😉
What a relief to actually see whales on a whale-watching tour!
Tried caviar – yes, many times, but with things, not just spoons of it
Taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus – we did this with the kids in LA and it worked well because the city is spread out and without great public transport
Completed an escape room – no. I wouldn’t mind doing this sometime
Been inside a sensory deprivation tank – no
Created something with a label maker – yes. I love the look, but I’m alos lazy so now I’ve resorted to writing on my glass jars in the pantry with a sharpie
Ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle. (I have ridden on the back of one.) – no and have zero plans of going anywhere near a motorbike
Stayed overnight in a hostel – no
Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.) – yes. I love homemade jams, pickles and relishes
Gone whale watching – not on a cruise (I would get badly seasick) but on the tour we took on Fraser Island you see them from the beach. Ive also seen one up close to our boat when we were coming back from snorkelling on the outer Great Barrier Reef. Plus have seen them multiple times at Noosa and the Gold Coast from our accomodation
Used a DNA ancestry kit. – no
Okay, I am getting the memo loud and clear that hop on/hop off buses are amazing! I am so excited to make this a “Yes I’ve Done This” item from our trip.
I am like you. A sharpie is the extent of my current labeling.
1. Tried caviar – yes and it was weird!
2. Taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus – twice. The first was in New York many years ago (28?). I did one in London a few years back. Hubby was at a convention so I decided to take a tour round London; saw and learned lots
3. Completed an escape room – no but am hankering to do one.
4. Been inside a sensory deprivation tank – no and it really doesn’t appeal
5. Created something with a label maker – yes
6. Ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle. (I have ridden on the back of one.) – not a sidecar but as pillion passenger
7. Stayed overnight in a hostel – no
8. Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.) – not recently but I have made jam, marmalade, chutney and mincemeat
9. Gone whale watching – no
10. Used a DNA ancestry kit – no
So a total of 4 for me this time.
Okay, I’m convinced that London is the place to do this (also, we’ll be there in June, so the weather should be perfect)!
Ah that makes sense with the 150! My brain didn’t register that they call been 10 things each time.
I didn’t make it very clear!
I am so surprised you’ve never made jam, but then again, you have assisted which counts in my opinion! When I first moved to NS I made so much jam because I was so excited about all the local produce. At a certain point, that local produce seemed better for just eating rather than processing and I really don’t have pantry space or inclination to store large batches of homemade preserves. These days I only make chia jam and the occasional refrigerator pickles, which are significantly less work intensive than traditional canned jam/pickles.
Sensory deprivation sounds both relaxing and a little scary?
I used to have a label maker and I LOVED it, but don’t think I would replace it now.
I’ve made chia jam before but I don’t really “count” that as preserving since I just put it in the fridge and consume right away. Also, I feel like the time and money involved with preparing jam doesn’t really counter how inexpensive it is to buy jam and pickles at the store. I’d spend more to make most of those things at home (since I don’t have my own berry plants, for example). That said, I know there is a sense of satisfaction that comes from making homemade items and they are likely almost always more nutritionally balanced (you can control the sugar levels in homemade jam, for example). Also, the sterilizing and such always seems daunting to me!
I liked Kate’s observation that when she did it, she liked it but thought about how she could be spending this time reading a book. I think I’d be going over all the chores I WASN’T getting done or the books I wasn’t reading.
I made jam and pickles! It’s so easy (and delicious!)
I also went whale watching off the coast of Cape Cod! It was amazing!
I cannot believe you have never stayed at a hostel!
I wasn’t on a plane until 19, and then had a baby by my early 20s (and zero money to travel), so I basically didn’t do any travel until after having kids and a hostel is not very conducive for that sort of travel.
Tried caviar – Yes, and it was delicious. More as a little topping for something I think, than by itself or just on a cracker. I like the little orange salmon caviar.
Taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus – Um, I don’t think so? We took a double decker bus in London but it was an organized tour. We took a hop on – hop off boat in Paris, but we didn’t hop off until the end.
Completed an escape room – No thank you.
Been inside a sensory deprivation tank – No thank you.
Created something with a label maker – Yes, though not in ages.
Ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle. (I have ridden on the back of one.) – Same
Stayed overnight in a hostel – No
Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.) – I’ve made both. Both are pretty easy. The pickles are just picked onions though, if that counts.
Gone whale watching – yes, and it was AMAZING. DO IT.
Used a DNA ancestry kit – Yes, it was fun.
I think whale watching is officially getting added to my 2027 Fun List!
From this list, all I have done is taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus and completed an escape room. Escape rooms are a lot of fun as long as you have a good number of people who are very smart. I let them do all the work, muahahaha.
I’d love to try a sensory deprivation tank and go whale watching. One day!
I believe you can keep this going for eternity!
Tried caviar. NOPE (gag)
Taken a hop-on, hop-off tour bus. Maybe? I don’t recall exactly.
Completed an escape room. Didn’t even try
Been inside a sensory deprivation tank. No thanks!
Created something with a label maker. Yes—I love my label maker
Ridden in a sidecar on a motorcycle. (I have ridden on the back of one.) I was also on the back, while Coach was in the tiny sidecar. (Lisbon!)
Stayed overnight in a hostel. Nope. I’m too highfalutin for that. 🤣
Made a jar of preserves like jam or pickles. (I’ve helped my mom, but I’ve never made a batch by myself.) Nope. I did pickle onions, though.
Gone whale watching. YES! Costa Rica and New Zealand
Used a DNA ancestry kit. Yes, and now the government can do whatever it wants to me. If I’m convicted of a crime, Elisabeth, it wasn’t me. I swear!
I remembered your motorbike experience in Lisbon! It was one of the first posts I read by you!
Ha! I’ll keep my eyes on the FBI’s Most Wanted list now, Suz!
