It’s has been a long time since I’ve shared ten things I’ve never ever done. As always, they’re a random assortment.
Never have I ever:
- Topped up/changed any fluid in a car OTHER THAN GASOLINE. (Not oil, not radiator fluid, not even windshield washing fluid.)
- Gotten gum stuck in my hair.
- Taken an item of my own clothing to a dry cleaner. (I once took one of John’s suit jackets, and that remains the only time I have ever set foot in a dry cleaner in my entire life.)
- Been diagnosed with a UTI.
- Lost a fingernail or toenail. (Thank goodness—OUCH.)
- Used crutches.
- Gone dog sledding.
- Purchased (or been given) a lottery ticket. (Which obviously means I’ve never won any money via a lottery ticket.)
- Jumped on a pogo stick.
- Used a sourdough starter. (No pandemic bread for me!)
Part 1. Part 2. Part 3. Part 4. Part 5. Part 6. Part 7. Part 8. Part 9. Part 10. Part 11. Part 12. Part 13.
Your turn.
- How many of my Never Evers have you done?
- Any lottery winners reading here today?
- Is anyone a regular at their local dry cleaners?
- I know Suzanne has changed the oil in her car! Who else has tried their hand at this sort of thing.

FIVE! Although it’s been ages since I’ve taken one of my clothes to the dry cleaners. Or been diagnosed with a bladder infection.
But I haven’t done the more FUN STUFF, no lottery win or dog sledding yet! Given that you live in Canada, is it possible to dog sledding rides near your place?
There is no dog sledding in my part of Canada; it’s only in Northern Canada and it’s so dang cold that I have to admit I have little to no desire to go to a location where I can do it.
8 out of 10 for me this time.
1. Topped up/changed any fluid in a car OTHER THAN GASOLINE. (Not oil, not radiator fluid, not even windshield washing fluid.)
YES – regularly top up washer fluid. Have topped up oil in cars but not for many years now
2. Gotten gum stuck in my hair.
YES and I was not happy!
3. Taken an item of my own clothing to a dry cleaner. (I once took one of John’s suit jackets, and that remains the only time I have ever set foot in a dry
cleaner in my entire life.)
YES – I have but not for many years now. I go more for the easy care throw it in the washing machine type of clothing.
4. Been diagnosed with a UTI.
YES but thankfully not for a few years now
5. Lost a fingernail or toenail. (Thank goodness—OUCH.)
NO thank goodness
6. Used crutches.
YES – only for a few days after a nasty fall landing directly on my right knee. I could barely walk and ended up getting it X-rayed, thankfully no break but
it did hurt!
7. Gone dog sledding.
NO, not a lot of opportunity to do that here.
8. Purchased (or been given) a lottery ticket. (Which obviously means I’ve never won any money via a lottery ticket.)
YES and had a few small wins and did once win £1,400.
9. Jumped on a pogo stick.
YES when I was a LOT younger
10. Used a sourdough starter. (No pandemic bread for me!)
YES but it has not survived. I keep meaning to start a new one but haven’t got round to it yet.+
I wouldn’t be happy about gum in my hair, either!!!
That’s an impressive lottery win!
I’ve done everything but 5, 6,7. My sourdough starter didn’t last beyond a few weeks. I got it from a coworker- it was a thing at the time to share this named starter ( herman?) And a list of care and recipes. Life was busy, and sourdough starter doesn’t cry or whine to get fed. So I’d forget about it.
I had many trips to the dry cleaners back in my single days. After kids, not so much!
I only did an oil change once with lots of help. I do top off other fluids though. My husband and sons take care of the oil.
I only buy lottery tickets to show my class in quantitative literacy how unlikely they are to win. The most anyone has won off the scratch offs was four dollars.
Herman – haha. I love it!
Maybe one of these years you’ll have someone strike it rich???
1. I have topped off the windshield washer fluid. But that’s it.
2. Gotten gum stuck in my hair–maybe as a kid? I don’t remember. I remember reading in a book somewhere people discussing how to get gum out, either with freezing it with ice or using peanut butter!
3. Never used the dry cleaner for myself. I remember going with my mom to drop off and pick up items.
4. Been diagnosed with a UTI–I can’t remember if I have!
5. Lost a fingernail or toenail–I have lost the SAME big toenail twice. Once as a kid when somebody opened the locker room door at the YMCA before I could and they jammed my big toe under it hard. They ended up having to burn holes in the nail to release the pressure, and I lost it. The second time (as an adult), somebody had left a small glass of melted butter in the fridge, to harden, and it fell off and landed precisely on my toe. That hurt, but honestly the losing of the dead nail doesn’t hurt.
6. Used crutches–nope!
7. Gone dog sledding–never have, never will.
8. Purchased (or been given) a lottery ticket–Do scratch offs count? I used to work at a Woolworth’s and we sold those, so I once in a while did those, but I’ve never seen the appeal.
9. Jumped on a pogo stick–never had the opportunity!
10. Used a sourdough starter.–yes, and it was a big fail. I ended up with solid bricks. Never again.
Ouch!!! I had a sibling that had to have the holes burned to relieve pressure, too. Ugh. I’m literally shuddering just imagining it 🙁
8/10 for me today! I’ve never brought anything to the dry cleaners or been dog sledding. I used to run long distances so I’ve lost quite a few toenails. I wore poorly fitting shoes for a marathon once and lost… six I believe? Sorry for that image hah. I also used to work in a liquor store and customers would regularly give us lottery tickets as an appreciation gift. It was pretty fun and I won some small amounts, but I’m thankful I didn’t get really into it.
SIX TOENAILS. Wowzers.
I’ve done half of them:
3. I used to wear suits (blazer/skirt) to work in the ’80s, so they needed dry cleaned as well as some of my dresses.
4. Have had about five UTIs in my life and they are horrible. Last one was just 18 months ago. It becomes very common after menopause because of the loss of estrogen.
8. My in-laws used to give out lottery tickets at Christmas. I’ve only ever won about $2. So NOT worth it.
9. Pogo sticks were popular when I was a kid, so I do remember trying them.
10. I have used a sourdough starter that was given to me by others, but I have zero luck when it comes to baking bread, unless it’s with a machine!
This is gross, but in November my son had one of his big toenails removed permanently. He’s had issues with it since college from a fungus and has suffered for years. The podiatrist finally recommended this as a last resort and he decided to do it. I will never be able to look at it because it truly disturbs me!
Eeks. I’ve never known someone to permanently lose their toenail. It sounds like the path of least resistance in some way, though I can understand you not wanting to see that!!!!
I have experienced 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8! The lottery ticket was a gift – my MIL loves to buy lottery tickets and sent me and my husband a couple a few years ago when the jackpot was extremely huge. I also went in on an office lottery pool once.
I have only had the toenail thing happen once, thank goodness. Makes me shudder to think about it!
Pogo sticks don’t appeal to me, so I doubt I will ever pursue that one, but I would love to try my hand at making sourdough. The process is way too intimidating, though.
Can you imagine winning one of those massive lotteries?????!!!! It boggles my mind… but I guess the whole point is someone has to win.
Yes to five of these! I used to have a car with a radiator leak (in my 20s) so was always having to top it off. And yes to the gum (sigh), dry cleaners- again in my youth, I don’t get anything dry cleaned anymore!- losing a toenail, and buying lottery tickets. I don’t buy them on a regular basis, but every once in a while I’ll get one. Once we won $20 on a scratch off card, but I think that was the most we ever won.
$20 is better than nothing, I suppose!
The only things I have done is bought a lottery ticket, I didn’t win and used crutches, I fell off a horse and broke my leg so they were needed.
Ouch!! This made me laugh because one of my daughter’s classmates FELL OFF A COW. Who is on a cow?????
Aw yiss! Let’s do this!!!
1. Just windshield washing fluid, so I have practically never done this.
2. I think so? It was a long time ago.
3. It’s rare! I have a nice interview suit that I have not worn in at least 10 years but when I did I wore it enough that it needed a few cleanings. I need to get my winter coat cleaned, but obviously I won’t be doing that until the spring.
4. Lucky you! At least it’s been a while.
5. Also lucky you, and lucky me that it’s been a while.
6. Woo hoo you and I are both lucky with this one!
7. Nope, not unless you count the times that my dog has gotten excited and pulled me on snow and ice. We’ve joked about how we would be better off with a sled or at least skis when this happens.
8. I wish I hadn’t. We do a lotto ticket exchange on Christmas at our big family party. It’s not a lot of money, but it bores me to tears.
9. Only once, when the kids were small.
10. Maybe? I dabbled in bread making when I was younger. I’m pretty sure that I just made bad bread.
I’m pretty sure I just made bad bread – hahaha.
Good bread is SO good and I used to make it from scratch but do not feel like spending that kind of time these days! Maybe in retirement?
I’ve done almost all of them!
1. Car fluids, YES. Oil, radiator, windshield, brake, transmission. . . When we were younger DH and I did pretty much all our own car care and repairs.
2. Gum in hair, YES But only once, thankfully I learned my lesson!
3. Taken something of mine to the dry cleaner, YES. Back in the day, lol. Since home dry cleaner sheets came out I’ve done my few dry clean only items myself in the dryer.
4. Had a UTI, NO. Thank goodness. Maybe because I seem to have an immune system that works overtime and I’m rarely sick but have things like allergies and eczema and sensitivity to perfumes and food additives, etc.
5. Lost a fingernail or toenail, YES. Several toenails through the years, all horse-related.
6. Used crutches, YES. Also horse-related, but only once.
7. Been dog sledding, SORT OF? Growing up, my neighbor raised and showed Samoyeds. I used to babysit their kids and also do dog care when the family was out of town. Once they took me for a ride around on their summer sled (on wheels) while dog training.
8. Purchased or given a lottery ticket, YES. Had an uncle that used to buy us kids a handful of lottery tickets for Christmas. Only ever won $2 or $5.
9. Pogo stick, YES. Had one as a kid, and also bought my kids one.
10. Sourdough starter, YES. A few decades ago. Decided that I’m not a sourdough fan (don’t like the texture in my mouth), so that was short-lived.
Eeks. I think the moral to this story is horses are dangerous!
Oh my! I’m kinda shocked that these things never have happened to you. LOL
1. Used to own a car (the family car) and had to put oil in every 3 days and transmission fluid every other week. Oh and it only got 10 mpg. It was cheaper for me to purchase a new car at 18.9% financing that keep that car.
2. Had a grandpa that would give us Chicklets. Nuff said.
3. Back in the 80’s, I worked in Manhattan and always took my clothes to the cleaners.
4. Always have 1. UGH!
5. This I don’t remember, but I remember black toenails from hitting doors, etc.
6. Broke my ankle when I was 63. My first broken bone.
7. Nope.
8. Trying not to waste my money on purchasing lottery tickets. Thankfully I usually only purchase when the prize is huge.
9. We had a pogo stick when we were kids. It wasn’t an easy one.
10. Nope. No pandemic bread for me! I usually don’t do good with yeast.
I struggle with yeast, too. I know there is an art and science (mostly science) to bread making, and I’ve never fully figured it out. I think part of the problem is I’m not overly patient.
I’ve done seven! Never been dog sledding, gotten gum in my hair, or made sourdough.
My car burns oil, so I have to add a quart every month. I tell myself that a quart of oil a month is cheaper than a car payment! The oil light usually comes on when I am traveling to visit out of state family, I think I’ve stopped at every auto parts store between their home and mine!
I need to go to the dry cleaners sometime to get a pair of pants hemmed – thanks for the reminder. I’ve had a few coats over the years that needed to be dry cleaned, but my regular wardrobe isn’t that fancy. I also need to go to the jewelry store next to the dry cleaners to get a necklace untangled. I guess I should make a day of it?
Dog sledding looks like it might be a fun ride. I’d be willing to try it, but I don’t think there is anyplace around here.
I didn’t realize dry cleaners did hemming and can I admit I have never ONCE thought of going to a jewelry store to get a necklace untangled. That’s genius!
Topped up/changed any fluid in a car OTHER THAN GASOLINE. – I’m topped off oil and windshield wiper fluid. Does that make me a mechanic?
Gotten gum stuck in my hair. – Of course. I was a child once.
Taken an item of my own clothing to a dry cleaner. – Yes, lots of times. I have nice clothes.
Been diagnosed with a UTI. – So many times.
Lost a fingernail or toenail. – My first NO!
Used crutches. – LOLOLOLOL *sob* Yes, of course.
Gone dog sledding. – Not for me, but this sounds fun.
Purchased (or been given) a lottery ticket. – I bought a ticket the day I turned 18 and then never again.
Jumped on a pogo stick. – Yes, I almost died.
Used a sourdough starter. – No.
So 7/10 for me!
In my eyes, you are basically an auto expert, Engie.
That is so specific on the lottery ticket purchase!
I’ve done a good amount of these!
1. I’ve added windshield washing fluid, but that was back in my single days. I don’t even put gas in the car these days. Phil fully owns all car-related stuff.
2. I’ve done this at least once. I remember my mom using peanut putter to get gum out of my hair.
3. Unfortunately this is something I do occasionally. But I try to buy machine washable fabrics now to avoid this.
4. I’ve had several UTI, one when I was in Germany on a trip in 2004. It was very hard to translate that issue to a German pharmacist.
5. Losing a toenail is a common occurrence for marathon runners. So I have experienced this but it actually wasn’t super painful. It just took months for the new toenail to grow back.
6. I was on crutches for 3 weeks after I had hip surgery to repair my labrum. That surgery put an end to marathons for me as I do not want to go through it on the other leg (had surgery on my left hip in 2016).
8. I don’t know if I have actually purchased a lottery ticket, but I’ve been part of lottery ticket pools at work when the pot gets very large.
I fill a vehicle up with gas regularly (did it yesterday, in fact), but would have no sweet clue how to do anything else.
Hip surgery does NOT sound fun 🙁
I have done 1,3,5, and 6. The lottery ticket was a gift. My winter dress is dryclean, but I just take it once at the end of the season. No crutches but I was in a moonboot for my stress fracture.
1. I’ve definitely topped of fluids. My last car was prone to overheating so I had to constantly add coolant. I drove around with gallons of it in my car. My father taught me how to change my oil once, but I’ve never done it on my own. It’s just really messy, so I’d rather leave it to the professionals.
2. No gum in my hair. Though my brother did set my hair on fire once when we were younger.
3. I’ve take special occasion things to the dry cleaners (Wedding dress, some semi-formal dresses) on occasionally bedding. But I try to avoid having clothes that require a special trip to clean.
4.no UTI thank goodness.
5. I’ve lost a toe nail a few times. Usually related to a sports injury. THe annoying phase is before it falls off and it’s just sitting there flapping around.
6.no crutches
7. Yes! I had a pogo stick as a child. I think it’s in my shed right now. The thing is annoyingly loud.
8. We buy lottery tickets as stocking stuffers sometimes, but I’ve never won anything.
Okay, I will take gum in my hair over having it catch on fire (the latter happened to my mom!) YIKES!!!!!
I have only done 2 of these: dry cleaning and lottery tickets, lol … I have several wool sweaters that have to go to the dry cleaner periodically 🙂 And we get scratch-off lottery tickets every year at Christmas for funsies, but have been known to try our hand at the big powerball too from time to time
I have *watched* other people (dad, husband) top off fluids in my car, but I have not done it myself, lol
Another vote from me for watching people top of fluid in vehicles. I feel like I should learn how to do washer fluid, especially where we have so much salt on our roads this time of year. We have a sensor that says when it’s getting low which is my cue to ask John or someone else to top it up for me. I’m a fairly independent woman, but have no interest in adding this to my skill set.
These are always so fun, and of course, so random!
Topped up/changed any fluid in a car OTHER THAN GASOLINE. (Not oil, not radiator fluid, not even windshield washing fluid.) Gas and washer fluid!
Gotten gum stuck in my hair. I don’t recall exactly, but I feel like I did this. I DO remember getting it out of my child’s hair.
Taken an item of my own clothing to a dry cleaner. (I once took one of John’s suit jackets, and that remains the only time I have ever set foot in a dry cleaner in my entire life.) Yes, many, many times!
Been diagnosed with a UTI. At least twice.
Lost a fingernail or toenail. (Thank goodness—OUCH.) Yes, my toenail—intentionally via an ingrown-toenail procedure.
Used crutches. Nope.
Gone dog sledding. Nope.
Purchased (or been given) a lottery ticket. (Which obviously means I’ve never won any money via a lottery ticket.) Yes.
Jumped on a pogo stick. Yes
Used a sourdough starter. (No pandemic bread for me!) Nope, not yet!
I used to have ingrown toenails as a kid. They were SO painful (though I never lost a toenail). I am so thankful my kids haven’t had this issue.
I’m now picturing you bouncing around your driveway on a pogo stick with Coach 🙂
I’ve done 5 out of your 10 Never Evers.
I’ve gotten gum stuck in my hair (don’t recomment, been diagnosed with a UTI, lost a toe nail (ouch), purchased a lottery ticket (didn’t win) and I’ve kept my sourdough starter alive for 6 years! Haha.
Dry cleaning should be outlawed. It’s expensive, not good for our health and the environment. Make better clothes!
That is an AMAZING track record with your sourdough!
We had a kid pogo stick when I was a kid, so I’m out there. I have brought my own clothes to the dry cleaner- but very rarely. I’ve never added or changed oil or anything in a car. I’m team WHAT A RELIEF TO NOT LOSE A TOENAIL OR FINGERNAIL.
Yes, some of my Never Ever’s I want to add into my life (like it might be cool to take a cruise), but I hope I go to my grave never having gum in my hair or losing a toenail!
I *think* I have changed the oil in my car at some point. Many years ago, though.
I have gotten gum stuck in my hair, been diagnosed with a UTI, purchased a lottery ticket, and jumped on a pogo stick. I know I have been to a dry cleaners, but I can’t remember if it was for an item of my own or something for my mom, ha.
8/10 for me! I’m an Australia who has never touched snow (barely a handful doesn’t count), so no dog sledding here. And I don’t think I’ve ever lost a toenail or fingernail thankfully. Unfortunately for me I’m really good at hurting myself, which also means I’m very skilled at crutches haha.
I can’t imagine only ever touching a tiny handful of snow IN MY LIFE! It’s cold and… overrated (as I look outside at a truly giant pile of snow, with more coming today and tonight).
