I recently finished Cozy by Isabel Gillies. I’d rate the book “a bit unsatisfying” – started strong, finished with a whimper – but it inspired me to write out a list of things that represent cozy to me.
While she doesn’t overtly define cozy, Gillies writes: Coziness stems from the very core of our individuality. Cozy is an attitude, not a thing – a shortcut to bringing the most essential parts of ourselves with us wherever we go.
“Cozy” isn’t just about things we like or even things that bring us joy. I think cozy represents experiences and the stimulation of certain senses that make us feel safe. Nurtured. Content. And, while individual ideas of cozy may have overlap, our lists are always going to be unique.
In a 10-minute brain dump, here’s what I came up with:
- Fall. All of it. The leaves. The colours. The smell – crisp air, sunshine, decaying leaves.
- Soft, fluffy blankets. (Coarse, thin blankets are an abomination.)
- Snuggles – at bedtime with the kids; in the morning with my husband.
- The smell of wild mint on my parent’s shoreline.
- Lemon-scented cleaner.
- Walking into a house where fresh bread (or any other baked good) has just come out of the oven.
- Cradling a hot drink.
- Driving with music playing loudly (preferably on a warm, sunny day with the windows down).
- Church.
- Christmas. The music. The presents. The smells. The way the world quiets down for a few days.
- Micronaps.
- Twinkle lights.
- Lamps.
- Books.
- Documentaries about artists.
- Rain when I don’t have to be outside.
- The sound of cicadas on a hot summer afternoon.
- Sunsets.
- Peanut butter and banana on toast.
- Browsing picture books at the library.
- Neat and tidy spaces.
- Cushioned socks.
- Closing my eyes when I know I’ll be asleep in seconds.
- Anne of Green Gables.
- Baked apple desserts – still warm – topped with vanilla ice cream.
- Soup. Biscuits. Cornbread.
- Slipping in to pajamas.
- Showers right before bedtime.
- Being with Mom; drinking coffee while sitting around the table with Dad.
- Unexpectedly catching a waft of a clothes dryer while walking by someone else’s house.
- Saturday mornings.
- Magic bags.
- Sitting in front of the patio window on a sunny day.
- Receiving letters in the mail.
- Pumpkin pie.
- The movie White Christmas.
- Sitting down to enjoy a meal I didn’t prepare.
- Waking up with nowhere to go.
- Smelling a book.
- Indoor plants (not flowers).
- Walking through a forest; the smell of evergreens.
- Mom’s meatballs and rice; her “brown stew” with a baked potato.
- Fresh cut grass.
I’ll stop there for now; it’s your turn! What things – smells, flavours, sights, experiences – represent cozy to you?

Nice cozy list. I agree with most of them – not the dryer scent, though. I always think “TOXIC” when I smell that, and it’s so everywhere! And cozy for me, right now, sweet Noelle and Ada, curled up with me for a story. Feeling so lucky after spending the weekend with them:)
Elisabeth
Reading grandbabies a story might just be the ultimate in cozy!!!
Grateful Kae
Great list!! I agree with literally all of them. (Except I’ve never had your mom’s meatballs and rice or her brown stew + baked potato, but I am fully willing to come up and join you guys for dinner so I can try them. 😃) I think you forgot “a fireplace!” That’s a big one for me- love being cozy by the fire. I’d also add “walking after dark and seeing the glow of lights/ glimpses of other people’s homes”. I 100% agree with the rain when I don’t have to be out in it- there is nothing more cozy to me than a summer rain when I’m sitting in our sunroom with the screen door open and the house is preferably empty besides me 😉 I’d also add “candles”- I don’t light them super often, but I LOVE cleaning the house on a fall Saturday, opening the window to let some crisp air in, baking something good smelling in the oven, and lighting a fall scented candle in the kitchen. I also will add “settling into bed with the lights off but the TV on and the bedroom window open to watch a show before bed with my husband”. Love that and I will often literally sigh out loud in contentment after the long day is done and I can just relax.
Elisabeth
A fireplace IS cozy. I think my coziest fire experience is sitting in my parents open-concept dining room/kitchen where their main wood stove is located. I Love sitting in a chair in front of the fire and doing…just about anything. Reading a book. Chatting. Drinking coffee.
I also love seeing the glow of lights at night and little vignette’s of people’s lives!! Yes. 100%
The end of the day collapse is very, very cozy!!

Oooh coziness! I love curling up with a book, that is the definition of cozy to me. Winter is cozier than summer, but nestling into bed at night always feels lovely and cozy.
Elisabeth
I agree – it’s a bit harder to find “cozy” vibes in the summer! Something about the food/smells and general COLD OF WINTER IN CANADA that make warmth and hearty meals feel oh-so-cozy.
Jenny
Yes, I agree with just about everything on your list! We get a lot of thunderstorms in the summer, and I love when it happens in the late afternoon when everyone is home and we don’t have to go anywhere. I also love nights where I crawl into bed, knowing there’s no specific time I have to get up in the morning- that doesn’t happen often enough, but when it does happen it feels EXTRA cozy!
Elisabeth
Just about any storm is awful if you’re in it, but kinda pleasant if you can just watch, right? We rarely get thunderstorms where we live, but at my parents home on a lake, they get them throughout the summer and we were just talking yesterday about how much we love seeing a good thunderstorm roll in over the lake. (If I was out ON the lake in a boat, I’d be singing a different tune.)
Lisa's Yarns
Ok how did playing loud music end up on this list, Elisabeth!! That is like my worst nightmare honestly. Ha. I LOATHE loud music! Even if it’s a song I absolutely adore! I would otherwise pretty much co-sign this list. My top cozy things are: “stick to your rib” meals that are served in a bowl (soup, stew, chili, etc), a warm cup of coffee, especially if it’s enjoyed in a quiet house, time spent at my parents lake home, fireplaces, soft blankets, and snuggles from my toddler. Taco is definitely very into cozy things. He is very particular about the way clothes feel and he loves fleece blankets. And he is really really snuggly – like the “I can’t get close enough” type of snuggler where he just can’t get enough contact with my skin when I sing to him before bedtime.
Elisabeth
I promise – when you come visit me in Nova Scotia, I will NOT blast any music when you’re in the car. I hate loud things if I’m not in control, but in the car, with a song I like, it’s almost the louder the better. That does NOT fit my MO, I know, but I really like loud music in that context.
Quiet is very important to me for cozy (except maybe the “hum” of a coffeeshop; I find that pretty cozy). Snuggling a toddler is just the best! L is still verrryyyy snuggly and it is very, very cozy <3
I agree with Taco - material matters BIG time!

What a lovely know-yourself-better question!
Along with much of your list (literally, almost all of them!) the things that come to mind for me are:
The wind in my face – think biking downhill, rollercoasters, boat rides, driving with the windows down.
Misty summer mornings
Lots of candles and cozy jazz on dark fall/winter evenings
A leisurely vacation breakfast
Walking barefoot on warm pavement after dark – so nostalgic.
Spring bird sounds
Elisabeth
Ack – rollercoasters! NOT cozy to me!!! I think I just always feel like I’m on the precipice of dying. Oh, wait. I AM!!! (I think I posted about my dislike of rollercoasters before), but the window down driving I can get behind.
Candles and jazz. Yes! Your place is so, so cozy on winter nights.
Ally Bean
Cozy = the scent of apples, a mug of hot coffee, fleece socks, daisies, and a throw to put over my legs while I read.
Elisabeth
Apples really are so cozy, right? Though I wonder how much of that is the apple and how much is the fact that usually there is cinnamon involved. I think cinnamon is such a cozy scent.
Blankets + hot drinks = perfection.
Michelle G.
Such a lovely, cozy list, Elisabeth! I agree with almost everything on your list!
To me, cozy means sitting in my favorite chair next to my husband, wrapped in a soft blanket, and wearing pajamas. Hot chocolate is my ultimate cozy drink.
Elisabeth
That sounds oh-so-cozy. I love that you have a favourite chair, too. I bet that seat represents “cozy” for you, too.
NGS
Peak cozy = rainy Sunday, I’m on the couch burrowed under a blanket reading a book and the cat is on my lap. PEAK!
Elisabeth
I don’t have a cat (sadly), but when I picture cozy cats, Zelda tops that list! I love your cozy Sunday vibes, Engie, and will hope you get some rain, a good book, a fluffy blanket and, of course, Zelda snuggled in on your lap, very soon.
coco
I have started the book and found it less interesting as it progressed, as the concept is pretty easy to grasp, so I DF.
My cozy list:
– reading in bed
– meditation in the dark morning
– oatmeal
– warm cup of coffee or tea
– Pj
– watch a movie when it’s raining outside
Elisabeth
Yes! It really did go from engaging to…boring, fairly quickly. I skimmed the last half, but I appreciate that it gave me the nudge I needed to make a cozy list. Just writing the list felt cozy.
Oatmeal is definitely cozy comfort food for me! (Bonus points if I’m wearing pajamas, sitting with my feet up on the dining room chair, and I have a cup of hot coffee waiting for me when I’m done.
Stephany
What a fun exercise!
Peak cozy for me is curling up in bed in the middle of the day – bonus points if the room is dark and cold. The feel of my cats’ fur against my hand – so soft. A hug from my mom. That moment right as you get in the shower and get your whole head wet – love it!
Elisabeth
I will admit that my coziness is all about seeking and finding heat (I wonder if I’d feel differently if I lived in the inferno that is Florida).
Hugs! How did I not mention hugs as being cozy (though I think I tend to prefer snuggles on the couch?)
I am feeling left out of the party with you and Engie getting to snuggle your adorable cats!!!
I have a “thing” about water on my face, so I have to be ridiculously careful when I get my head wet. I am a bit high maintenance; *sigh*
Melissa
Oh dear, you may think the blanket on our bed is an abomination, but our apartment is so warm we need something lightweight to sleep under, so we have the top sheet and a cotton blanket (but it’s soft, not scratchy). Cosy for me is Pjs or trackies, a good book and a hot drink, preferably while it’s raining outside.
Elisabeth
As long as it’s not scratchy, I guess a thin blanket can be cozy!!
Trackies…now this I’ve never heard of? Is that like athletic wear?
Rain is a common theme!!! Being outside in cold rain is the opposite of cozy, but beyond that there is something so cozy about rain. Water! Natural white noise! The sense of not needing to do as much outside since it’s raining. It’s natures way of forcing rest and relaxation, I think. Unless you’re on vacation and have a big outdoor adventure planned and then rain is just the worst!
Shelly
Cozy blanket, cat, book, coffee, and rainy, snowy day which makes it easier to enjoy. Whereas a sunny day beckons to be outside.
I also love a cranked tune in the car although I’m not sure I would use cozy as the feeling for it.
Fresh washed sheets and blankets, snuggling although my kids don’t anymore. My daughter watching a show with me is the new version.
Elisabeth
Agreed that summer isn’t inherently nearly as cozy as fall and winter (at least in our Canadian seasons).
What a great point; we get cozy from different sources as our kids/we age. Only one of my kids still snuggles, but I definitely feel cozy watching movies with both of them – it’s dark and there are soft blankets involved, which is a lot like bedtime snuggles!
Diane
Well it’s 80 degrees here today, so cozy isn’t top of my mind… cozy isn’t something I normally think about in the summer time, but maybe Gillies’ point is that it should be season-less? There are so many cold weather things that I think of as cozy and warm and hunkered. Summer to me is about getting out and about and throwing my arms wide open. Cozy summer things, though – maybe crisp cotton sheets? A hammock. A porch swing. Tubing. Watching 4th of July fireworks on a picnic blanket.
Elisabeth
I think I always thought of cozy as something that had to be tied to something dark/warm and inherently cozy. But Gillies listed so many things that were outside that norm and a realized: Oh yeah, some of these things are cozy!
A porch swing is definitely cozy! A house on our regular walking route has two “under the deck” swings and they painted them in a bright teal recently and added pretty accent pillows. Very, very cozy looking.
Joy
This may just be my memories of rollercoasters – haven’t been on one in ages. I too always felt like I was going to die at least before the initial drop but found the subsequent speed exhilarating!
Elisabeth
It is exhilarating…until I vomit on someone’s shoes. (I haven’t actually done that.) It is a “high” of sorts, but one that I don’t find addictive. John, on the other hand, LOVES rollercoasters and would go out of his way to ride on one. To me, it just feels like I’m inviting death to my doorstep. To be honest, though, of course – the most dangerous part of an amusement park is the car ride to get there, so it’s just my brain being irrational!!
San
What a lovely list, Elisabeth. I agree that “cozy” aren’t just certain things but a feeling or emotion that makes us feel safe.
On my list are…
… coffee (alone on the couch) or with a friend
… the smell of something freshly baked out of the oven
… a summer breeze
… a fluffy blanket
… the crackling of a fireplace (that’s why I love even our fake TV fireplace)
… classical music
… vanilla scented candles
… breakfast at my parents’ kitchen table
… a soft oversized sweater
…
Elisabeth
San, reading this list felt SO DARN COZY. All of it absolutely screams c-o-z-y.
