All week I’ve been wishing it was Friday so I could focus on Happy Things.
And then I realized, I don’t have to wait.
- Small group potluck on Sunday. For our friends who opened their home, for the bustle of several dozen people spilling out onto decks and lawns, sprawled on living room furniture, and milling around a table groaning under the weight of delicious food. For the gaggle of kids – mine included – playing together with wild abandon in the backyard. These are our people!
- Peaches. Fresh fruit can be hit-and-miss, and none seem riskier than peaches. Some years I get so discouraged from past failures, I don’t even try. Well, I took a chance and over the last week have consumed a giant basket of delicious peaches. Juicy, sweet, and reminiscent of childhood summers. My favourite culinary joy has been cutting up two peaches and topping them with a few heaping spoonfuls of vanilla yogurt.
- The movies. We went. Again! Cheap day for the win! This time it was Despicable Me 4 and which was fun and delightful. L insisted on getting a picture with the movie poster. It’s tradition. And traditions bring joy.
- Coffee.
- Hot showers.
- Dresses. I live for dress weather. They are more comfortable than any other form of clothing on me and summer is dress weather. I am here for it.
- A’s enthusiasm for camp. She came home hoarse from the first full week of her summer leadership position and positively BURSTING with stories. When I asked if she wanted to do the same program next year the answer was perhaps the most enthusiastic Yes of her life. She’s away again this week as an overnight camper, with several of her closest friends sleeping in the bunks around her. #BestSummerLife
- Video games. I haven’t had a lot of bandwidth for parenting this week, and the Asphalt racing game brings so much joy to L and much needed quiet time for me.
- A magical sunset. Despite being jetlagged, John was itching for a local adventure this weekend. He loves to chase sunsets. We hopped in the car – grabbing a football on our way out the door – and drove to one of our favourite sunset spots. God delivered. The kids played football and talked while John and I sat on some driftwood and watched the sun dip lower and lower.
- Fresh raspberries. My favourite fruit. A friend dropped some off after visiting a local U-pick. And the same day we found some wild raspberries on a walk.
- New walking route. After living in a town for over 15 years, I didn’t think we’d discover a new local walking route. But we did. And it took us by some lovely wheat fields. What a joy to explore something new.
- Crossing things off my list. I needed to update paperwork for volunteering in the school system. It’s not hard, but it’s fiddly. Done. I needed to renew travel insurance. Not hard, but requires a phone call (and you know how I feel about phone calls). Done.
- Dog library. We managed to combine crossing something off my list with a family walk, and I thought this little roadside “dog library” we passed was ADORABLE.
- Isaiah. I recently complained about the slog that is the book of Isaiah. What a gift it has been to me this week.
Your turn. What’s your favourite summer fruit? Do you have a go-to walking route, or do you like to change things up? Have you ever seen a “dog library” before? Dresses, shorts, skirts or pants – what’s your go-to summer fashion?

Hooray! I love that you’re so full of Happy Things, you couldn’t wait until Friday.
I agree- there’s nothing better than having your kids involved in a summer activity- preferably sleep away camp (JUST KIDDING)- that they love. We haven’t had a lot of that this summer, but my daughter is doing band camp at the school this week (starting marching band practice) and it’s so good to see her engaged in something again.
I’m so, so envious of your walking routes! That picture of the wheat fields is filling me with a tremendous desire to run along that dirt path.
Hmm, favorite summer fruit? I would say anything that I could pick myself. I love raspberries, but they can be iffy if they come from the store. Last summer I got to pick blueberries when visiting my sister, and they were so delicious.
It sounds like both your kids are having an amazing summer! L looks incredibly happy in these photos.
Elisabeth
If you make it to Nova Scotia, there are a lot of very long paths you could use for your runs! And even on our hottest days, I bet it’s cooler than your average summer temp in Florida.
Freshly picked fruit is soooo good. It just can’t compare to anything bought in a store and transported (even if it was picked locally).
The kids are really living their best lives. It’s been a tough summer for me, but I also feel very satisfied because they’re just getting to do so many fun things! L very much enjoys being the only kiddo home!

That Dog Library legit just made me smile so hard! I LOVE IT! I have a couple of regular walking routes that I rely on, but I try to do a new one each month to mix it up and see some new places. (and pups)
Elisabeth
Isn’t it the cutest! I insisted we stop and take a picture and it really made me smile with delight. What a clever idea (I’d never seen a “dog library” before).

I LOVE all the stone fruit in the summer. Nectarines, plums, cherries. I want all of it all the time! One of my favorite memories from college is the summer I stayed on campus working orientation and doing an internship in the nearby big city and when I was walking to my orientation gig I was eating a nectarine and it was a Perfect Summer Day.
We don’t have a lot of wheat fields around here and I grew up surrounded by wheat fields, so those photos are making me very nostalgic.
My boss just came back from a trip to New Brunswick/PEI and today she was talking about the Bay of Fundy and I got so excited because I could add to the conversation thanks to you!!
Elisabeth
Mmmm. Cherries are sooo good. I’m meh about plums, but they have a cross between apricots and plums called plumcots that are THE BEST.
It made me smile so much to hear that you got to weigh in about the Bay of Fundy!

Good stuff! Raspberries are my absolute favorite summer fruit, although I also love a good peach/nectarine or watermelon.
Dresses are top-tier summer wear! I always wear shorts underneath but still.
Please show me that walk by the fields! Looks gorgeous!
Elisabeth
Raspberries are my favourite and I think mainly because they just always seem to be good. Most other fruit can be so hit-and-miss but, at least where we live, raspberries always seem to be so consistently delicious.
I know we see eye-to-eye on the dresses.
And yes! I’d love to do that wheat walk with you; it’s off the Harvest Moon right by the church at Grand Pre!

Yes, for not waiting. I write my Friday posts all week. Usually, in the morning, I write down the previous day’s good things. I love all these good things.
I love exploring when I go for walks but G likes to walk the same route most times. I usually walk the same route if I’m walking Riley. Fruit wise, I love a good apricot but they are almost impossible to find unless you go to the farm. I prefer nectarines to peaches because I don’t like the fuzzy skin. And I like shorts for summer or for dressier then a dress.
Elisabeth
I keep note of my Happy Things in my planner, but this week I really needed the boost and when I stopped to reflect I could see there were so many Happy Things. Sometimes when I note them in isolation I move on and forget, but seeing them all written out in a post gives me the impact of realizing: Wow, I had a lot of Happy Things!!
I prefer to walk the same route – that way I know what I’m in for. And I’m even picky about the direction I go. We walk a loop regularly and I always, always, always want to go to the right. It can start to drive my family crazy π

Whatβs your favourite summer fruit? Raspberries. In a pie, in a glass of chilled white wine, out of hand. They are perfection.
I have seen a dog library, often near Little Free Libraries!
Elisabeth
Raspberries are a popular choice and I agree!
I’ve never seen a dog library before, but it’s genius (and hilarious).
sarah
You know I love dresses! We are loving nectarines and peaches over here! An excellent realization, by the way, that you didnlt have to wait for Friday to appreciate all of these things π
Elisabeth
I LOVE all your dresses. Because of my body shape, dresses are literally the only thing (other than spandex and pajamas) that are comfortable. I hate wearing pants. (Shorts are even worse).
Joy
Favorite summer fruit: apricots–I love, love, love them!
I have never seen a dog library before. It’s the cutest.
Dresses are my secret to staying cool in the summer. They are the best.
Elisabeth
Yes! Not only do dresses fit me more comfortably, they have built in air conditioning!

Raspberries are my favorite summer fruit! Runner up is seedless watermelon!
I tend to take the same routes for walking or running. Mostly I am running unless the kids are with me. Because I’m training for a 10 mile race, I’ve had to adjust my running routes which has been kind of fun! But I would rather run the same route over and over again because I am a creature of habit!
I love dresses but I do not wear dresses on the weekends. I’m crouching too much to feel comfortable in them (I prefer knee length or shorter dresses so I risk exposing more than I’d like if I crouch in a dress!). I recently bought some Skorts from Target so that has become my new weekend uniform.
Elisabeth
One of my sister’s LIVES in these very chic skorts. Very versatile. I look ridiculous in them; sigh.
I didn’t wear dresses nearly as much when my kids were younger. Agreed – not ideal if you don’t want to flash someone when you’re still in the bend over/pick up stage.

Wednesday Joys for the win. How great you realized you make your own rules.
Favorite summer fruit: blueberries what else. But also I picked some wild blackberries for dessert after I had a picnic lunch outside.
That sunset spot looks so great. I’d go sit there if I could.
Elisabeth
It’s nice to remember…on my blog, there are no set “rules”!

Favourite summer fruit: Mangoes!
Never seen a Dog Library before, so cute. Favourite summer outfit is a tshirt with either shorts or long skirt. But I do love dresses, I just donβt own that many. Hmm maybe next summer Iβll change that!
Thanks for sharing your happy things π
Elisabeth
I like the idea of mangoes, but they always get stuck in my teeth which I find endlessly frustrating. Is it just me? Are my teeth all wrong?
Birchie
Yay for pre-Friday. Doggo would love the dog library! She’s not as crazy about sticks as when we first got her, but when she was little she used to pick up the biggest sticks she could find and march around proudly with them.
I love dresses for summer as well.

Yes to joys any day of the week! I had some peaches in DC and love them! We don’t have it in Indonesia but I am enjoying papaya.
I like to run the same route so I can tune into the audiobook/podcast/music than figuring out new routes. My summer outfit, or year long outfit, jean short + shirt.
Elisabeth
I prefer to go the same route, too. I can put my brain in “neutral” – but it was fun to see something novel, especially since it was local and I didn’t expect to be able to find a completely new route I’d never explored before.

I’ve been enjoying peaches and cherries (mixed into Greek yogurt) recently. So good!

Ooh, happy things. All the summer fruit, please. All of it – stone fruits, berries, melons… the one that isn’t my favorite is blackberries (the SEEDS). I can manage them with raspberries but blackberry seeds are a bit much. That’s not to say I’ll turn down a blackberry, though. I have to eat All The Fruit while I can! π
Love the new walk – my challenge is finding a new walk that doesn’t require (much) driving that is also visually restful and enjoyable. So far, I am pretty much striking out. Sigh.
I’m so glad your kids are so engaged in their summers. Peak tween/early tween summers, for sure. You may have had “low bandwidth”, but man, you are dong an amazing job despite that. That smile from L! <3
Elisabeth
Agreed. If I never had another blackberry again, that would be fine with me.
It has been a great summer for the kiddos and that makes me very happy.
