Every day in February I’m going to write down something positive. It could be a glimmer of light on a dark day (literally or figuratively), a tiny triumph, or a happy thing. It could be small – “I didn’t have to wait in line at the grocery store”; it could be huge – “Access to clean water”.
There are no rules. If you miss a day…nothing bad will happen.
I know some readers are dealing with heavy challenges and finding anything about which to be grateful might seem borderline impossible. I have been there and I’ve learned there are glimmers and triumphs and happy things to be found, even in the middle of a thunderstorm.
I’ve come to see my gratitude practice as a shelter of sorts; a safe, dry oasis I can escape to for at least a few minutes each day. It doesn’t stop the downpour, but it can make the deluge seem a little less scary and overwhelming.
You had to know I would make a printable, but a piece of looseleaf or the back of an old envelope will work just fine. The method and medium don’t matter, it’s the doing that counts.
Now let’s go collect some figs.

I see you combined the FIG and the Collective – great name!
We’ll see if I can find some figs in the desert of my life right now. How many times will I use hot showers ? 😉
Elisabeth
I loved the “collective” term too much to let that slide. Plus, “club” felt a bit exclusive and clique-y and who needs that?!
Honestly, if you list hot showers every single day for the month of February, that’s awesome. It means you’re tuned in to how they bring you a ray of warmth and happiness and relief in this season that has been so hard for you and your family. I hope you have other little moments of joy and gratitude, but I will be sending you virtual confetti even if it’s hot showers x 28.
Hugs <3
Joy
Many cold mornings I lie in my warm bed and thank God for hot showers. They’re the best!
Jenny
GAAAH! I love this so much!!! The idea is great and the printable is amazing. And February is the perfect time to do it- it can be a dark, depressing month. Obviously, I’m in!
Elisabeth
Yay, Jenny!! Woot, woot.
Aren’t the anthropomorphized figs adorable? I didn’t think that name would win, but now I’m glad it did because I think the word fig is rather hilarious to say, so if I have a particularly bad day, I suppose I can list how silly “FIG” is for a gratitude acronym.
Katy @ Practical Walk
I’m in!! So excited!
Elisabeth
Yay, Katy!
Diane
How cute is that printable!
I have a line in my journal for writing one thing I’m grateful for every day and, yes, sometimes I have to dig down deep. I’ve realized, though, that when I have to look hard to find something for that “gratitude” entry at the end of the day, I’m not taking time in the moments throughout my day to be grateful for things. I think that’s also a good part of the gratitude practice for me – a reminder to take time to notice things *all* day and not just when it comes time to write it down. It’s an ongoing practice, not merely a reflective one.
Elisabeth
I mean, finding figs WITH SMILES felt like it was all meant to be.
Diane, you continue to amaze me with insights! I agree. On days where I’m tuned into little “glimmers” throughout the day, gratitude comes so much more easily. Usually, it has to do with how tired or busy I am. On days where I’m stressed and running around like a banshee, I feel grumpy and am much less likely to stop and appreciate things.
My Happy Things Friday posts have literally felt life-changing for me because I DO stop and write things down when I notice them.
J
I know your answer to this is going to be, ‘you do you, however you want to do this is great’, BUT, how do you envision participation? I was thinking any time I post something on my blog, it would include however many FIGs had passed since the last post, but then there’s the adorable printable, and now I’m wondering if I should write them out physically on the printable, and then post that on March 1st?
What does this look like in YOUR mind?
Elisabeth
I really should have thought this through a bit more thoroughly, perhaps.
My original thought was to just keep the list throughout the month and post a picture at the end, but I feel like we might all need a bit more encouragement. I’m open to ideas of how to make this feel more collective, especially since I know some of the people participating DON’T have blogs.
I could do a weekly segment where people send in FIGs and I post them, maybe even bullet form? Or I could have people send me in a picture of something that they counted as a “fig”.
HELP! People voted on the name, and I guess now we all get to decide how this shakes down in terms of sharing?
NGS
I’m planning on posting a F.I.G. update once a week – for this last week in January and then once a week in February. I’m happy to send them along to Elisabeth, too. But there’s no way I’m printing anything out (SORRY!) and keeping track until the end of the month sounds like too much for my poor brain to handle. Is this the wrong way to do it? Tell me if this is wrong, Elisabeth, and I’ll change course. But I probably still won’t print anything.
Elisabeth
Engie, I am beyond impressed you are starting THIS week. Gold stars. Do you want to take over leading the challenge? You are much better organized than me – I haven’t even printed off my “worksheet” yet.
THERE IS NO WRONG WAY. No need to print anything off. No need to send me anything. No need to share. You can collect figs digitally, you can collect figs as photos only. NO RULES (sorry, Lisa!!). You do you, my friend and I am so grateful you’re participating. I always loved your CBWC recaps. I expect cameos from Hannah and Zelda!
NGS
I’m in! I’m going to start today, though, and not wait until February! I need some practice time.
Elisabeth
Yay!
I think Hannah should also keep a list in February.
Day #1. I am thankful my human did NOT put booties on my feet for my walk.
Day #2. I am glad my human did NOT make me take a bath.
Day #3. I am glad no strange humans I don’t know came to my house today.
Joy
Oh fun! I will definitely write them down in my journal every day. Such a great idea.
Elisabeth
I’m so glad you’re joining me, Joy <3
Sarah
Yay– printed my tracker in color and everything 🙂
Elisabeth
Gold stars! I know you will make this FABULOUS, Sarah <3
J
OK, I’m going to write them out and post at the end of the month, BUT I will also post them on an ongoing basis because I think that will bring more cheer to the month!
Elisabeth
Love it! Can’t wait to read all about your FIGs.
ccr in MA
Oh, fun! I’ve printed my fig tracker; I’m in.
Elisabeth
You inspired me to embrace the FIGs – your enthusiasm was contagious 🙂
Lindsay
I’m in! I feel like this will be so good for me and my current state of brain overwhelm, haha, sigh. I might start now, too, just to get some practice in. I love FIG (and figs)!
Elisabeth
Practice makes perfect. Well, with a gratitude practice, I suppose practice just makes us more aware and that tends to increase gratitude! It can be so hard to pay attention to the good when we’re overwhelmed by hard stuff. We can do this!!!
Daria
I am SO IN! More details please- journal or blog, and how will we share? Or, will we share?..
Elisabeth
There really are no “rules”. As I’ve pondered it a bit more I think my plan will be to offer a bonus Saturday “FIG” post on the 8th, 15th, and 22nd. People who are interested in sharing can send in pictures of their paper list or photos of something they’re thankful for or their top FIG from the week or some note about how listing at least one point of gratitude daily has impacted their week/mood/experiences…basically anything people might want included in my recap. No pressure to send things in, no pressure to ever share your list.
You can run your own gratitude practice as it best serves you!
Jacquie
I am in, and I am going to print two copies. I plan to give the other one to my husband. It will be a great conversation piece for us to discuss what we both found grateful in our day. Perhaps once a week people could email you what their favourite “fig” was for the week. Then you could compile them. Similar to the collage of photos you post for the monthly Cool Bloggers Walk photos. Just an idea, but I don’t want to create extra work for you.
Elisabeth
Awww. I just LOVE this Jacquie. What a great relationship-bonding exercise.
And I plan to post a FIG update 3x in February (8th, 15th, 22nd and welcome photos or stories or anything people want to share related to gratitude)!
Gigi
I’m in. And, in an effort to ensure that I actually use my planner this year, I will be writing it there – two birds, one stone. Now, that I’ve typed that phrase out – OMG, what an awful picture that conjures up!
Elisabeth
A few months ago I used that saying and commented how I really needed something less violent and someone (can’t remember who – Jenny?) said that vegans sometimes say chop two carrots with one knife which I thought was pretty cute.
Yay for gratitude. Yay for using planners! (I write out Happy Things in my planner and LOVE having a record of all those good moments sprinkled throughout my planner).
Ernie
I have a few nuggets already in mind . . . Like so grateful for the girls’ Friday therapy and the driver sullied by DCFS because Coach anc I have carved out date time the last two Fridays. Cute graphic btw.
Elisabeth
I’m impressed you already have ideas in mind. It seems like all my readers are keeners and have already started ahead of February. Love it!
Joy
I love it! That graphic on your printable could not be more adorable! Looking forward to finding figs with you in February (It could be a yearly recurrence – February FIGS!)
Elisabeth
I mean, anything anthropomorphized just slays me.
We can be Fig Finders <3 You will definitely make my list!
Michelle G.
Elisabeth, this is a wonderful idea for February and your printable is adorable! I’ve printed my copy and am ready to fill it with figs! You are such a positive, inspiring person – thank you for doing this!
Elisabeth
Awww. Shucks, Michelle. Thanks for such kind words and I am just so impressed by how many people have already printed off the sheet. Wow. I didn’t expect people to be so enthusiastic and it’s making ME more enthusiastic.
I will admit the cute little figs have me extra excited about the gratitude practice!
Lisa’s Yarns
I love this so much! I will record mine digitally because despite my best efforts I cannot write! I tried to hold the pen with my thumb and middle finger and that did not work. I tried to write with my left hand and it was even worse!! Thank goodness I don’t really need to write (but miss being able to jot down notes!). Needless to say, it will be good for me to look for the good!!!
Elisabeth
If anyone deserves to be grumpy it is you. Oof. What a hard, painful start to 2025, but I love that you’re participating and I can’t wait to see what FIGs you find in February.
Nicole MacPherson
YAY LET’S DO IT!
Elisabeth
Nicole, somehow I just knew you’d show up the party adorned in festive caps lock. Yay! Can’t wait to be grateful with you this February <3
Shelly
I’m in! Since I’m not a blogger I plan to write them in a notebook. Keep it simple for you. You could just ask people once a week for a highlight of the week? Or share in other ways. I think the key is noticing what we can without adding stress.
Elisabeth
Agreed – adding stress to the exercise is 100% counter-productive. I think this can be a one-size-fits-all approach and we tailor the fit to best serve us in our current season of life.
Kyria @ Travel Spot
I am in for sure! I like the idea of writing down or being able to remember the fun or good or positive things that happen each day. I know there is at least one per day, just getting in on paper is sometimes the hard part. Thanks for doing this!
Elisabeth
I bet you will have some very intriguing FIGs based on your adventures. Can’t wait to hear all about them <3
Sophie
Just catching up on posts – sounds like a great initiative- I’m in. I’ll probably do a weekly round up on my blog (like your Friday Happy Things). I’ll record it in my one line a day journal I think 🙂
Elisabeth
Love it! I think I’ll do the worksheet for February and if the daily bit sticks, I’ll use my planner? Right now I list my Happy Things, but I might have 5 one day and none the next. But I have an empty space in my weekly spread that I haven’t known how to fill. Maybe it’s just meant to be for my FIGs?
Darlene Cardillo
great idea! I think I’ll join thanks to Jenny – runnersfly
Elisabeth
Hi Darlene. Wonderful! The more the merrier.
Kate
I love every single thing about this! The smiling figs with their rotund bellies, the purple motif, the name, the idea! Will definitely print it off for physical tracking and I like the idea of compiling our figs with a weekly round up post.
Elisabeth
Yay! I’m so glad you’re joining in.
I loved the cute figs, but it delights me to no end that everyone else is equally enthused <3
Colleen Martin
Just printed out 8 sheets for my family to participate with me…love this!
Elisabeth
Colleen, you have NO IDEA how happy this makes me. EIGHT PEOPLE. From one family!!! Gold stars.
Melissa
I think you know I’m all in on this!
iHanna
This is so cute, love that name, ill, idea, printable! I have written plenty of gratetude lists before but it’s been a while since I last had one going, so sign me up for the club please!
Elisabeth
Yay! I’m so glad you’re able to join <3
coco
this is a great idea!!! sign me in! I love that it’s small and doable.
Elisabeth
Yay! So glad to have another international voice <3
San
This will be an exercise in keeping sanity for me, so yes, I am in 100%. I am hoping to print this beautiful sheet out (or fill it out digitally!) and I love the idea of a weekly round-up. We can all use some joy going forward.
Elisabeth
There’s not a lot we can do about some issues in the world right now, but we can focus on joy, supporting those around us, and celebrating the good things! So glad you’re “in”!
Stephany
Yes, I am in of course! Also, can we talk about HOW FRIGGIN CUTE your top graphic is? I literally exclaimed out loud (to my empty apartment): IT’S SO CUUUUUUTE.
I am debating if I want to post my figs (god, I love that we’re calling them figs) weekly or do a big round-up at the end of the month. I will decide soon!
Elisabeth
You have no idea how much I smiled at the idea of you talking about my figs out loud!!!
Maria
Looking forward to this!

I am a little late to the party. Nevertheless I forge on to say this is a great idea. To save my sanity, I had decided to notice one thing in nature each day, and I am going to say that will come close to counting as a FIG. I will be posting them weekly on my blog and also forgiving myself if I miss some days.
Elisabeth
FIGs come in all shapes and sizes and I can’t think of a better place to start than appreciating nature <3
February FIG Week 2 – Not a Wasted Word
[…] You know, last week wasn’t that great, but every day I was identifying bright spots I could mention and it really helped my over all mood and outlook.
