It finally – really and truly – feels like summer.
The weather has been glorious this week. Glorious. I feel like breaking out into the chorus of Angels We Have Heard on High just so I can sing an elongated Glo-ri-a. Not only has it been sunny and warm during the day, the evenings have been deliciously cool. I suspect Anne of Green Gables would heartily approve of this weather combination.
The week had its regular share of ups and downs and I was not always able to embody, as they say, the “best version of myself”. The biggest down was the fact that A’s final dose of (strong) antibiotics was given without food resulting in some unpleasant side effects. She ended up coming home a day early, but was so enthusiastic about the training experience. She has a fun summer ahead.
And, thankfully, the good outweighed the hard.
In lieu of a Happy Things Friday post, I’m coming at you with a decidedly summery version of things I’m celebrating.
ICE CREAM
We’ve gone out for ice cream three times this week. Even though my second cone was a bit of a fail (pretty horrible soft serve at a roadside stand), it was still decadent in a way only ice cream eaten in the full sun of summer can be. For his part, L is favouring one scoop of coffee and one of sea salt caramel which seem like decidedly adult flavours. Most of his friends are still very much in the Bubble Gum! Cotton Candy! Anything Neon! season of life. Apparently, we have moved on from that stage.
Or have we? Yesterday, I took L and a (different) friend to a local farm market. I had just finished reading an article about the flavour Moon Mist. It’s a staple in the Maritimes and now one of the most popular flavours in CANADA. The ingredient list sounds bizarre, if not overtly disgusting: banana, grape, and bubble gum. Anyone who has been reading here long enough could likely surmise this is not my typical flavour combination. But when in Rome, er, Nova Scotia… So I tried it for the first time in my life. And it was shockingly delicious.
SWIMMING
I went swimming. Swimming is on par with 5 am wakeups. I grew up swimming. I spent countless hours in the water each day of summer vacation. I know how to swim. But I have blossomed into a delicate orchid of a human being who shrivels up and dies a slow and miserable death in cold water. Very little in life feels worse to me than being cold and wet simultaneously.
On Wednesday we trekked to a local waterfall. I wore my bathing suit underneath my outfit, but didn’t realllly intend on going swimming. Once the kids had braved the water, they asked if I was going to join them and I surprised even myself by saying Yes. It was cold, but refreshing. I enjoyed it enough that I went back in for a second round.
We had one of L’s friends along for the ride and the boys had a great time alternating between splashing in the bone-chilling water and sunning themselves like string-bean lizards on the hot rocks.
I love these long exposure shots John captured of the waterfalls.
STRAWBERRIES
I drove by our local U-pick field daily this week and each time felt a little twinge of guilt/regret I hadn’t gone to pick strawberries this season. I wanted to eat fresh strawberries, but I didn’t want to pick them. Of course I could buy them in the store, but everybody where we live seems to take a requisite trip to the field.
One morning, a retired neighbour couple popped over to see if our kids would like to join them on a trip to the U-pick. Both kids were gone, so we declined…but a few hours later our doorbell rang and it was our neighbours delivering a box of fresh-from-the-field strawberries!
I’ve now had my fresh strawberries. Guilt and regret duly assuaged.
BBQ
John is king of the BBQ and we’ve been having it several times a week. I love not having to cook, he loves to BBQ, and we all love the food. Win, win, win.
AIR CONDITIONING
I feel like I’ve mentioned this recently, but what a gift it is to have air conditioning. While the nights have been cool, the house still gets warm during the day. We pull the blinds and do what we can to mitigate the heat naturally…but it is a joy to come inside from intense heat and feel the welcome embrace of cool air.
FRIENDS
I fit in a walk with Joy (my best not-married-to-me friend) where I brain dumped the contents of my caffeinated squirrel brain* and a bike ride with John (my husband and best married-to-me-friend). A came home from camp raving about friendship bracelets and all the new connections she made that could, potentially, last a lifetime. There was the day spent canoeing out to an island for training exercises, and Wacky Tacky Tuesday, and late nights in the Craft Cabin. And L’s days were filled with mornings of sports camps where he declared he knew Every single person there, and afternoons of playdates and adventures. Splashpads and waterfalls and ice cream and water fights and driveway basketball and eating supper on the deck off paper plates and Hot Wheels and LEGO. Basically, we’ve been living our best summer life…in lowercase letters.

SUMMER FEET
Yesterday at supper, L came to the table wincing a bit. He had just come inside after two hours of being outside in bare feet. He had played basketball in the driveway and raced around the house and on flagstone pavers playing hose tag with friends. He looked at me and said two words, with a wry but contented smile: Summer feet. And I thought it was the perfect summation of his day and this season. I remember those early weeks of summer, tiptoeing over rocks and around spiky weeds while my feet adjusted to their new freedom. By the end of August, those same feet were calloused and tough as old boots.
Summer feet.
We’re jumping in with both…
Your turn. What are you celebrating this week (aside from July 4th for all my American friends!). Do you enjoy swimming, regardless of the water temperature? Do you ever pick your own fruit? Bare feet outside in the summer – yes or no? Inside your house: bare feet, socks, or shoes?

In the old reader, you have to kind of scroll through the post to get to the next, and I was waiting for this to open in a new window – I saw the photo. I looked and looked again. HOLY SHIT IS ELISABETH SWIMMING went through my brain. YOU WENT SWIMMING! I know how you feel about getting all wet, this is huge news. So glad you enjoyed it! I am still in shock though. Swimming!
It is hot hot hot here! I might actually go swimming, my SIL lives right on the lake and she mentioned yesterday I should come over. Maybe I will! M and J have been in the lake a few times and reported it as being very cold, but it’s going to be in the 30s all week so I’m sure the water will warm up a bit. After all, I have swum in Sylvan Lake which is never ever warm, so I’m sure it will be fine.
Elisabeth, I am PICKING MY OWN FRUIT EVERY DAY! My strawberries have been going crazy, plus we have raspberries and even some blueberries. It is glorious. Now, am I getting a flat of strawberries, no I am not. But it’s very fun all the same. SUMMER YAYYYYY
Inside the house in the summer, it’s bare feet! In winter, socks.
Elisabeth
Ha. I know. I bet you thought it was an aberration or something. But, yes, I did go swimming. It is big news, and I am actually secretly thrilled it shocked you.
Harvesting all this fruit and veg must make you so very happy. And I bet it’s all absolutely delicious. My favourite fruit in the world is raspberries and I really should plant some at our house. It would delight me to walk out my back door and harvest a handful every day. Just yesterday L and I decided we want to go to the raspberry U-pick this summer. It’s more civilized than strawberry picking (no squatting required) and the place we go also has white raspberries which are extra fun.
Sarah
YAY SWIMMING! But seriously that waterfall is gorgeous, HOW COULD YOU NOT???? What a joyful little post– love it all.
Elisabeth
It’s such a sweet little spot, tucked away in an unassuming spot. We hadn’t been in years and I’m oh-so-glad we thought of going again this week. It was the perfect backdrop to a hot summer day.
Jenny
Wow, you guys are having the best summer! I love it all- the weather, the swimming, the ice cream, the strawberries… it sounds so perfect. It reminds me of summers as a kid. Sadly, Florida summers don’t resemble this at all- although we do have one thing in common, being grateful for AIR CONDITIONING.
Hope A is all better now.
Elisabeth
Ha, yes we are united over air conditioning! Though then I struggle with getting too cold and I still use a Magic Bag on my feet each night like the OLD LADY I AM.
A is doing great. I think it was good for her to come home a bit early and decompress (we have a busy, fun-filled week next week). She’s currently lounging in pajamas playing word games. Translation = LIVING HER BEST LIFE.
ccr in MA
Ah, summer feet! I was able to get that as a kid, but as an adult I am decidedly a tenderfoot. I tried to toughen my feet after I moved to Florida and ended up with blisters on the soles of my feet, ow. Not trying that again. I love being barefoot, but not outside much here.
Elisabeth
Yeah, I rarely go barefoot now. It takes a lot of barefoot time to get tough feet and I’m not willing to put in that much discomfort. Shoes it is, but it’s fun to see my kids recognizing the “summer feet” effect.
Birchie
What an epic week! I love swimming in theory, but unless we’re in Florida in the summer, the water is usually too cold – and sometimes even then. And it’s such a pain to get wet yada yada. All of which is to say that I don’t swim nearly as much as I would like to.
Barefeet outside – not unless I’m on the beach but I love being in sandals. Barefeet inside the house – I usually don’t walk around barefeet but if I’m sitting with my feet up, I’ve probably taken my slippers off.
Elisabeth
Same – I like the idea of swimming (and many things, to be honest) in theory…but then when the rubber meets the road I’m not quite as enthused.
I’m either barefoot or in Crocs 90% of the time in the house.
NGS
Blueberry UPick just started here this past weekend. Woot woot! I’ll have to get it on the calendar and get it done soonish.
I can’t swim, to be honest, so I mostly like to walk along a shoreline with my toes in the water. But I do like it. It’s fun to be at a beach in my world.
Elisabeth
For years we did blueberry u-picks. I think I might only do raspberry this year? They’re my favourite and also it’s easier to just get a small amount. At the blueberry U-pick we go to, as I recall I have to buy a minimum weight and it’s a lot of blueberries.
I can swim, but still prefer to just walk along the shoreline! Water is just so darn cold most of the time.
Michelle G.
It looks like you had so much fun swimming; that waterfall is gorgeous. What great photos! I haven’t been swimming in way too long, but I do enjoy splashing in the sprinkler on a hot day—it’s very invigorating! I can’t do bare feet – I really don’t even like sandals. In the house, I always wear socks.
Elisabeth
The last few days our hose has been working overtime. I was too lazy to dig out the sprinkler, but the kids have found lots of ways to cool off and have fun with the various hose nozzle spray settings!
SHU
the waterfalls are beautiful!
you could not pay me to eat that moon mist flavor, haha! i get gaggy just thinking about it (in particular i have a bubble gum aversion but the other two components are not enticing either). however, L’s coffee/salted caramel choice sounds delectable!!! haha.
Elisabeth
It is SO not my typical ice cream. Bubble gum – gag me. But I had wanted to try it for the sheer fact it is such an iconic flavour that I knew nothing about (taste wise at least). I was pleasantly surprised. But, yes, if you hate bubble gum that badly I would steer clear.
L LOVES coffee (if he had his way, he’d have a mug each morning at breakfast).
Coree
My mum motto is “always be the mum in the water” which means I swim in temperatures much colder than my Californian soul prefers. But I always end up enjoying it. We’ve arrived in Portugal and looking forward to getting in actual cold water on Sunday. Today was a lazy day – very early flight on Thursday and then I was up too late watching election returns, and we are going to a medieval knight reenactment tomorrow.
Elisabeth
That’s an amazing motto (definitely not mine…!).
Yay! You’re in Portugal. I hope this is the exhale your brain and body needed; and I’ve never been to a reenactment like that but one of my siblings really enjoys that sort of thing. I should try it sometime. Sounds fun!
Lisa’s Yarns
You went swimming in cold water!! All the gold stars to you. I sort of like swimming? I loved it as a child. As an adult I am kind of a wimp about the cold. Phil is far heartier and likes swimming way more than I do so I ‘let him’ be the fun parent that goes in the water. Isn’t that big of me? Ha.
We have had the rainiest weather so far but today is beautiful. I am trying to make the boys stay outside as much as possible because it is way too nice to be inside. As much as I appreciate screens I also would like to time travel back to my childhood when there was no argument about screens…
That ice cream flavor is interesting! I don’t know that I would be brave enough to try it! L’s flavors are so mature. My boys tend to order chocolate. Paul is particular about things so I can’t ever see him ordering cotton candy or bubble gum, etc.
Elisabeth
I’m the same; as a kid you couldn’t keep me out of the water. I think silly things like having to deal with wet hair, makeup, earrings etc make me less inclined to swim as well. There was a very low barrier to entry as a kid.
It has been POURING here today, but hopefully the sun comes out tomorrow as we’re spending some time by the water and it’s so much nicer in sunshine.
Gigi
Ice cream! I’ve been craving it (it is SOOOO hot here) but my curmudgeon of a husband has so far rebuffed my requests. Hmph. Maybe I’ll just go without him then!
Summertime, bare feet in the house. Only a little bit outside, but not on hard, hot pavement.
That waterfall is spectacular!
Elisabeth
I hope you go get the ice cream you’ve been craving, Gigi!!! Take yourself on a little solo date?
Maria
What a joyful list! Summer feet – love that term! My kids attempt the barefoot life a lot and chafe at the “no shoes, no helmet, no biking” rule. Their ability to run barefoot over rocks impresses me and makes my feet hurt to watch.
Your mention of it being hot during the day makes me wonder – what’s the fog situation on your side of the bay? I presume you also get a lot of advection fog? We’re definitely in the fog belt at our house but five minutes further inland it’s not foggy.
Elisabeth
We have the exact same rule for bikes/scooters etc.
We rarely get fog. I’ve never been in a place that gets as foggy as Saint John! I’ll admit I rather despise fog and find it so depressing. We get fog…a handful of times a year? That’s it. Despite living very close to the Bay of Fundy!
Grateful Kae
THAT WATERFALL! It’s so beautiful!!!! I would LOVE to go there. I love stuff like that. It reminds me some of the waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where I’ve been, though I have certainly never swam in those because brrrrr!! If I could transport that waterfall to Costa Rica or somewhere warm though I’d be all over it. HAHA. I’m so glad you went in! I feel like that’s similar to how I felt when I jumped off that big rock in Hawaii. I was not planning to because #scary but when the kids asked and were excited, I was like, You know what? YOLO. Gotta live while we’re alive!
Elisabeth
It’s not a huge waterfall (like some of the enormous ones you saw in Hawaii), but it’s a really quaint little spot. You can jump off rocks into the water (and there’s a rope swing some of the time), but I’m always SO nervous about that sort of thing, so I didn’t even suggest it to the kids.
I jumped off a bridge once and it was terrifying. It also hurt. A long jump is surprisingly physical on entry!
Sophie
What a happy post! Yay for perfect weather. WELL DONE swimming! I am also a delicate flower when it comes to cold water too, so I’m very impressed. And what a pretty spot! Nice to celebrate all these good summer memories, as Laura Vanderkam says, not every moment might be easy, but your remembering self will enjoy looking back on all this classic summer activities (and your kids delight). 🙂
Elisabeth
And would you believe that I went swimming again yesterday! It was short, but sweet…but I did it!
Yes, my remembering self will be happy indeed and, at the time, my experiencing self was really happy (proud!) once I got over the shock of the cold water.
coco
i love this list, especially swimming, bare foot, and friends. Love the pics of the waterfalls, so beautiful.
I’ve been enjoying spending some time with my academic mentor family in florida, love the quietness and blue sky here.
Elisabeth
It all felt like very “summery” vibes…
J
We live in a townhouse complex with a pool, and I go through phases when I use it a lot, and others when I don’t at all. I’m in the middle of a ‘do not use’ phase. It’s too warm right now, as the weather has been 103 – 104 for almost a week now. I like it warm, but it kind of feels like swimming in sweat when it gets too hot. Maybe I’ll give it a try soonish…I love that pool and waterfall, that is a beautiful spot for a swim, even if the water is cold. I’m glad you went in!
The ice cream looks not good. I’m glad you gave it a try and discovered that looks can be deceiving!
Elisabeth
I feel like water where we live never gets that warm…or maybe I just find any water cool? But, I’ll admit that swimming in sweat sounds AWFUL!
Yeah, it is not my typical ice cream, but I wanted to try it since it’s such an established tradition in our region (and I’d never had it) and yes…shockingly okay. Even…good?
Joy
Yay for you and swimming. I rarely do anymore unless it’s very hot or I’m at my father’s house where no one can see. It looks like a beautiful place to swim though.
I love going barefoot and spent every summer running wild in bare feet. One of my summer memories is having to clean my feet at night before bed. Alas, my age and hard floors mean I can’t go barefoot anymore without pain so I have to wear shoes around the house. Every once in a while I go barefoot for old time’s sake.
My children and I went berry picking multiple times a summer every summer when they were young. It was an inexpensive, fun thing to do (there were goats you could feed) and my mother lived near the berry farm so she would meet us there. I then went home and made jellies and pies and preserves. It was so fun and I miss them being little and doing things with me. I usually buy my berries at the local farmer’s market now–slightly more expensive but less work for me while supporting local farmers.
Elisabeth
I agree that sometimes it’s no cheaper to do U-pick and it IS a hassle.
I definitely used to use berry picking as a good activity to fill the time with my kids. I have pictures from the time they were babies out in the fields.
Diane
I used to like going fruit picking, or at least the idea of it. But here, it’s not any cheaper than any other method for getting fruit- the pick your own farms near me are kind of AN EVENT with petting zoos and games and what not.
So I just buy my fruit now. Maybe from a farmers market, if I’m lucky.
What some wonderful summer moments you are having!!!
Elisabeth
Agreed. I used to really want to do it. So I guess the fact I dread it/put it off means it isn’t serving a purpose for me anymore (like Joy mentioned above, it was a great activity to do with kids when they were younger).
San
Oh, this post definitely screams “SUMMER” in all the best possible ways. I’d happily take some of your summer weather (“sunny and warm during the day, the evenings have been deliciously cool”) because we’ve been in this 40+C heatwave for the last week and I am so over it. It doesn’t even really cool down over night and I do not enjoy 25C at 6:30 in the morning.
We haven’t BBQed (too hot) or been out swimming, but I’ve been indulging in ice cream more than once this week (mint chocolate chip, if you need to know). And we had strawberries (not u-pick, but still… that was so thoughtful of your neighbors!)
Elisabeth
Yikes. That heatwave sounds pretty awful. Especially temps that high that early in the morning. It makes SUCH a difference when it cools down overnight.
Mint chip…yum. Perfect for cooling off in a heatwave. You have my full approval for seeking it out frequently 🙂
Stephany
SWIMMING! I’m proud of you for getting in the water. I love a good swim in the pool, especially if I’m hot from being outside but anything TOO COLD is a hard no from me. And I would assume lake water is a LOT colder than pool water. I would have had to be VERY HOT to go in, haha.
I am using the heck out of my AC this summer. I was over at a friend’s house and she had her AC up to 79F and I was dying, lol. I need it 73F or lower to be comfortable these days.
Elisabeth
It was…much colder than pool water. It was refreshing, but it’s not something I’d want to do every day (though maybe it would get easier). The sunshine definitely helped. I knew as soon as I got out of the water, I’d start to really warm up. I can’t imagine these people that get into ice cold water in the winter. Gah. Apparently it’s amazing for health, but I literally shiver just thinking about it.
Cold AC kills me. We keep ours around 77F…if it’s really hot out, about 74. Any lower and I’m an icicle!
Suz
Moon Mist ice cream. What? It looks so pretty, but also weird? I’m glad to know you enjoyed it.
That water does look cold, but also, it’s gorgeous and if your kids ask you to join them, you join them.
I love neighbors who deliver fresh berries; send them my way!
I live in SW Florida and we can’t live without air conditioning, so I couldn’t imagine even way UP there, not having it.
Elisabeth
It is weird. Right? Like what an odd combination of flavours. But I’m glad I tried it!
I can’t imagine living in SW Florida period. My sister lives in South Carolina and we’ve visited twice in May in recent years and it is oppressively hot. IN MAY! Summer’s in Canada are close to perfect, and fall is my absolute favourite. But winter leaves a lot to be desired. I see “snowbirding” in my future…
Colleen Martin
Ice cream + swimming + summer feet + air conditioning = perfect summer things! That flavor combo does sound very weird and I wouldn’t be brave enough to try it but I guess I would have missed out! I was catching up on your posts, and I know that feeling of waking up early to work out, as I am also not an early bird, so good for you! I wake up at 6am to walk the dog and that’s about all the fitness I can handle at that time of day right now, so I do a workout later but I do wish I could force myself to go hard right in the morning. One day!
Elisabeth
A 6 am walk sounds impressive to me. Maybe the solution is a dog? I think I’d appreciate the companion…but one that doesn’t require me to talk at that time in the morning.
We're On Lake Time This Week - The Optimistic Musings of a Pessimist
