At first I thought Day Four would have a bit of a chaotic start – Belle had an orthodonist appointment in a neighbouring town, Indy had to get to school, and Kyria and I wanted to fit in some morning adventures that were dependent on the tide. Thankfully, it all ended up working smoothly.
Kyria walked Indy to school which gave me an extra half hour to get work tasks done at home. I was racing to cross things off my list until the second Belle and I walked out the door, but we managed to make it to the orthodontist with time to spare!
When I dropped Belle off at school and went through the sign-in process I saw the previous student to arrive late was a Grade 1 girl. The reason? “Big feelings.” I chuckled…and also felt a pang of pity for her because I can relate. Feelings can be big whether we’re 5 or 50!
When I got home Kyria and I sat at the table and chatted for a while before heading to Medford Beach to walk on the ocean floor. I’ve blogged about this spot before, but it is one of our family’s favourite places to visit. These formations are only accessible by foot at low tide and kayak at high tide. We had fun exploring and there were kilometers of empty beach to stroll along at our leisure.
A nearby stream was full enough we were able to wash our feet to a reasonable level of cleanliness before hopping back in the car for a quick drive to nearby Cape Blomidon.
There is a lovely hiking trail, but I knew time was tight so we settled for a leisurely walk along the mud – all the way to the source of Indy’s beloved crystals. Kyria found a special one just for him!
Home for a quick lunch (pumpkin soup and sweet potato crackers), and then we rushed out the door because we had a tight timeline before the kiddos got home from school. We started at the Wolfville sign. A new addition to the waterfront, and a lovely place to be on a sunny October afternoon.
Next up was the post office where we bought some stamps for our postcard-mailing escapades.
Leaving the post office, Kyria reminded me I needed to pick up a few items for a birthday gift! (She preps food, makes coffee for my son, and keeps track of my to-do list; when can she move in?) She helped me find the various items (on sale of course), and then we headed to our final stop – homemade ice cream. I got salted caramel with Reese’s Peanut Butter chunks and it was so, so good. I forgot to take a picture before I had already inhaled half of it. My mouth is watering just remembering the flavour. Salted caramel can be overwhelming (too salty, too sweet) but this version was bordering on perfection. We savoured our treat at the waterfront and then headed home, just beating the kids to the driveway. Excellent timing.
Indy had a friend over for the afternoon so they played various and sundry games while Kyria, Belle, and I sat on the deck and talked through a series of questions from the appendix of Charles Duhigg’s book Supercommunicators. Kyria and I had started answering them on our return walk from Cape Split, but we spent hours (HOURS) going through these questions as a group of three. Belle couldn’t get enough!
We had a brief stop for supper (leftovers), Indy went outside to play street hockey with friends and then left for basketball (another mom kindly offered to take him). Aside from those minor disruptions it was non-stop talking.
Unfortunately, by the end of the evening Belle was feeling under the weather. Poor thing. Based on her symptoms and the fact she had gotten new orthodontic wires earlier in the day, we think it might have been an allergic reaction triggered by the change? Indy and I worked together to help her get comfortable and thankfully she slept through the night.
Once again I fell into bed exhausted! What busy days we were having. It felt like so many moving pieces with all the adventuring, work, and extracurriculars, but it was a satisfied exhaustion.
DAY FIVE
Belle was on the fence about school; in the end I told her if the answer wasn’t a clear Yes, she should just hang out at home for the day (she can access most schoolwork online now anyway). She was content to rest (and, let’s be honest, watch screens) while Kyria and I walked Indy to school.
It was another beautiful fall day!
We took a circuitous route home, hiking some wooded trails and drinking in more fall beauty.
We were home long enough to shower, do some more packing, and get things pulled together for Kyria’s trip to the airport. Belle was still contented to chill at home, so Kyria and I headed off to meet Joy for a coffee in Wolfville.
We spent a lovely hour or so chatting (Joy is also from California, so they had plenty in common!), before going home to pack the car and make sure Belle was fed and settled for the afternoon.
We stopped along the way to have a delicious lunch at one of my favourite local restaurants – Cumin – and split Korean-style cauliflower, a hot yogi bowl, and some pasta. Yum.
Our last hour together was spent in the car where we fit in final conversations before I dropped Kyria (and Bob) at their overnight airport hotel before they left on their next adventure.
What a wonderful time we had together. I know I speak for my whole family when I wish Kyria lots of fun and safe travels in her future globetrotting…but also sincere hopes those travels bring her back to Nova Scotia <3
Your turn. What’s your favourite flavour of ice cream? Do you like texture/mix-ins? Are you better at small talk or deep conversations? Which do you prefer?

I totally get when you said, when can she move in? she is such a nice guest, right? always helping and going along with your family flow.
Bob????? I’m missing something, is she traveling with someone else? how I didn’t notice before and can’t remember his face.
Elisabeth
Bob is her…BIKE. She named her bike and writes about Bob as if he’s human which, at this point, he practically is <3
Birchie
I’m dying laughing at Coco’s question about Bob. When I wrote about my trip with Kyria, at first I just wrote Bob with a link to a post about him, and then at the last minute I added another word to explain. I won’t spoil it! I also can’t remember his face, but I remember him hanging out in the front hall of our Airbnb and going around the block with him.
I’m just waiting for Kyria’s list of the epic ice cream places that she’s encountered on her trip, and then I’ll plan a massive road trip.
I can’t wait to go to Medford Beach!
Elisabeth
I should have linked to the breakdown of where Kyria stores all her things about Bob!!!
I’m just as curious about you to read a rundown of Kyria’s favourite ice cream stops!

I’ve never gone to that Wolfville ice cream shop – looks yummy. Kyria must’ve been so grateful for the touring around – looks like she got a good look at the Valley’s best places. We’re at the Reservoir Park most days with Charlie since it’s so close to our house. See you sometime soon!
Elisabeth
Ohh! We could make that one of our local “dates” together? Though I do love chatting over a hot mug of tea. Maybe for a spring/summer meeting.
Yes, I am very much looking forward to seeing you soon.

What a lovely visit! It sounds like Kyria was the perfect guest, and I’m sure it was hard to say goodbye. The ice cream place looks so fun, with swing seats carved with cute quotes. Plus…ice cream!! I mostly love vanilla ice cream, but if I were getting some at that shop, I’d probably try something more exotic. I do enjoy crumbling in some cookies, and sprinkles are always festive. I am terrible at small talk! I’d much prefer a deeper conversation with someone I know well.
Elisabeth
Small talk is a skill. I’m okay at it, but live in amazement that some people find it easy and/or are so good at it! Deep conversations are much, much easier for me.
I love peanut butter in my ice cream, and it was the perfect blend of PB, chocolate, and salted caramel.

What a good recap. You really make me sound WAY cooler than I really am! Everyone’s expectations are going to be so high now that I am going to have trouble living up to them! I will give it a shot though, and as long as they take me to ice cream, I am happy to do anything. <3
The only thing you forgot to mention is how you made me climb all over that slippery rock in bare feet so that you could get a good shot! Haha! I am definitely not 10 anymore and have a lot more trepidation about falling, since obviously I have done it a lot!
My favorite flavor of ice cream is probably either vanilla or chocolate chip. I like to keep it simple, but will sometimes add slivered almonds if that is an option. I am definitely a deep talk person; I hate small talk! I want to dive right into the guts and I think we did a great job of that on this trip! Also, I am giggling at Coco's question about Bob too! He is pretty much human and has been a constant companion; maybe I should write a post about HIS favorite ice cream spots (as seen while leaning up against a fence post or wall, I suppose).
Elisabeth
If anything I have undersold you – you were a very cool, very wonderful guest.
Okay…yes, I did have you risk life and limb for a good picture. But I had faith in you 😉
Bob has taken on his own identity during this trip <3

We’ve actually got a trip to Nova Scotia planned as soon as we finish our renovations and send back the dumpster rental. I have to be honest, the initial thought of it (it’s a work trip that my husband decided to take me on) wasn’t overly exciting, but those pictures are beautiful! And that ice cream shop is what really looks good, what’d you say the name of it is? Thanks for sharing!
Elisabeth
Nova Scotia is beautiful. The ice cream shop is The Real Scoop and it’s located in Wolfville, one of the little towns in the Annapolis Valley (about 1.5 hours from Peggy’s Cove).

I love coffee ice cream, and definitely want some texture: toffee or oreos or at least chocolate chips. I like mint chocolate chip, too! Now I want ice cream…
Elisabeth
Mint chocolate chip – done properly – is very, very hard to beat!

You had such a great time together. And what I appreciate most is that as Cool Bloggers you made sure you documented it all for us all to simultaneously be part of your time together/be jealous of your time together/wish we were there with you 🙂
I am usually a salty snack kinda girl, but I love, love, love ice-cream and my favorite flavor is plain-old chocolate chip (or stracciatella, as they call it in Italian). I also enjoy (tart) frozen yogurt, no mix-ins. I am for simple flavors because that’s the only way you can actually tell if the ice cream is actually of quality.
Elisabeth
Ha! A few times I commented that “I wouldn’t be a good blogger if I didn’t get a picture of us doing X” – and Kyria totally understood.
Stacciatella is amazing; agreed there. I am definitely a salty girl (I’d take a bag of chips over ice cream any day)…BUT when you add a salty treat to ice cream, it’s divine. I think that’s why I like salted caramel and peanut butter. The little hit of salt just makes the sugar sing.

Kyria is the best guest and just an all around amazing person. I am so glad that blogging brought us together! I’ve known her for so many years now so she is truly an old friend now!
I love all kinds of ice creams, but types with mix ins are my fave. I like the change in texture.
Elisabeth
Agreed re. texture. Also, they tend to be a burst of flavour which I love to have sprinkled in and around a plainer flavour of ice cream.

Thank you for bringing us along with you on your time together, it looks like you had a wonderful time! Now I wish we had had a NorCal blogger get together before she left. We’ll have to do one when she is back.
I love ice cream, mostly fruit flavors. Is vanilla a fruit? Hmmm.
Elisabeth
It was so lovely. I do wish we could magically teleport everyone to a central location for a giant meetup. Though, maybe, since most of us are introverts, that wouldn’t be as fun as these smaller meet-ups where we can really get to know each other. Either way, I am so, so happy I got to spend this concentrated time with Kyria and she was exactly as I expected her to be. It’s crazy how well we “know” each other due to the interaction online. In some cases, we know far more about each other than we know about “real life” friends.
I love how someone said about the seamless transition from URL friends to IRL friends and it was so, so true with Kyria.
Maria
What a fantastic visit! Helpful guests and fun guests are both wonderful and when they combine into helpful AND fun it’s magical.
I’m intrigued by the sweet potato crackers. We recently came into a LOT of sweet potatoes and my beloved children don’t like them (how?!?) so I’m looking for creative ways to use them up.
Elisabeth
The sweet potato crackers were purchased. They’re the RW Garcia brand from Costco. In terms of sweet potatoes, I love, love, love roasted sweet potatoes. My husband prefers them shredded and fried. But you could definitely add pureed sweet potato into a chili or soup and it would add flavour (and colour) but none of the textural issues that come with kids eating plain sweet potato? If my kids didn’t like sweet potato, I’d probably just try to bulk up soups and stews and other saucey meals by adding that in!?
Jenny
Yes, I think I want Kyria to move into my house as well! This whole visit sounds amazing. The photos of Medford Beach are gorgeous, and as a poor, deprived Floridian, I love all the fall colors. I’m excited to see what Kyria does next.
Fun fact about my Dad- he could NOT make small talk. I mean, like he couldn’t understand how to do it and couldn’t understand that certain situations required it. As a result he would bring up really deep topics when everyone else was just talking casually. He would have liked your list of questions!
Elisabeth
I think I would have been kindred spirits with your dad. I am not good at smalltalk. Or maybe I’m okay with it, but I find it truly exhausting…
