Earlier today, in what can only be called an act of SHEER STUPIDITY, I attempted to make some minor changes to my website to improve functionality.
What I ended up doing was completely ruining the layout and function. I am sure it is fixable – and my timing to take a little bloggy break is perfect for me to have some runway to get things corrected – but…UGH. UGH. UGH. UGH. UGH.
Ugh because I should have known better. Ugh because I knew even as I was making changes that I wasn’t qualified to be attempting these tweaks and something could go wrong. Ugh because I’ve been too cheap to hire someone and now I WILL have to hire someone. Ugh for missing Belle’s volleyball games because I was on the phone with my hosting site. Ugh because all sorts of additional issues have come to light (for instance my automatic blog backups haven’t been working – of all people this should not be happening to me because I know better after what happened last year – but I only realized this today when my website went sideways and there was no backup and my host hadn’t informed me of this little tidbit).
I have a GIANT Happy Things Friday post ready in the wings, but I’ll hold off publishing that until the formatting has cleared. Ditto with the Cool Bloggers Walking Club Week #3 roundup. I have that post ready but will sit on it until things show up properly across various devices. Feel free to keep submitting pictures and I may just end up posting Weeks #3 and 4 together once the blog is fixed.
It seems to be a combination of a browser compatibility and caching issue. It’s showing up fine for some people, and horribly for others. Thanks in advance for your patience. And please, for the love of all that is good, make me promise to never, ever touch another optional button or try to insert my own code ever again.
Crossing fingers and toes that this will all be sorted soon.
How about one more UGH for good measure…UGH!!!!!!!!!
Your turn. What have you broken recently?

It seems to be working again…?

UG! That sucks! The formatting looks fine to me right now, but maybe you fixed it? My blog was having issues pushing out to Feedly last year and I actually did a huge “re-code” and it actually worked in the end. BUT it took me forever and I copied and saved all of the prior code and even figured out how to find bugs and stuff….however, in the end, I really do not know which fix helped and so would never be able to tell someone else how to do it, or to replicate it again myself. I would definitely be back at square one! Its good that you have someone you can call though, as I think the helpdesk for Blogger shut down sometime around the time that blogging became less popular (circa 2010 maybe). Thank goodness for Reddit though!
Elisabeth
I think it’s fixed? But the backup situation is a whole other gong show that I need to get to the bottom of. One step at a time. I think I’ll have to hire someone for support but so be it.
Eeks. I knew that Blogger wasn’t very active, but I didn’t know they shut down the help desk. Hooray for Reddit, indeed.
Jenny
UGH!!!!!!!! I hope you get it all sorted out soon. And, you’re scaring me- I still have to fix my blog and I’m afraid of ruining the entire thing in the process. But it’s also a good reminder- I should make sure my backups are working.
I’m sorry you have to deal with this. Hoping for a speedy fix.
Elisabeth
Well, my backups are NOT working and it is a huge shemozzle and I really should have been better on top of things.
Oh well. Here we are and I WILL get to the bottom of it. Hold me to that promise ๐
Gigi
I looks fine on this end! I know the lack of back up is freaking you out – hopefully they get it sorted soon!

Well, the digital display on our oven has been acting like a disco light for about two years now, but everything else works fine, so we just ignore it:)
Elisabeth
Disco lights are fun…?!

Hugs. Annoying as it may be this too shall pass. (The site LGTM so maybe it passed already?)
Elisabeth
I think it may have passed? My hosting site seemed to sort out the issue (I can’t tell if I created the problem or they did, but it seems to be fixed). But there are still some major issues with how much space my backups are taking and I will have to get to the bottom of that. Soon, hopefully. But that is definitely not my specialty…

Ugh!!! That’s so frustrating and nerve-wracking! It looks good on my end, so you must have fixed the issue. I know everyone says Substack is easier and better…but I don’t know. I like having my own website, but it’s so complicated!
Elisabeth
I’ve never even looked in to Substack, but I’d take easy and better right about now – ha!

So, maybe someone else mentioned this already, but it seems to me like tinkering with it is actually a good thing of it revealed your back ups havenโt been working. Now you know and can fix it instead of the worst happening and then discovering the back up issue. So a silver lining to a super frustrating situation?
Elisabeth
Love this perspective! I’ve been thinking the same thing! Now to get it fixed. I have one backup, so that’s a step in the right direction, but I need to find a way to hire someone (Fivvr, maybe?) who really knows what they’re doing to help me out.
It’s lovely to be able to find silver linings, so thanks for reminding of it again.

I’m seeing your blog here and hoping this comment goes through. Lately all of blogland seems to be off kilter. It might not just be you.
Elisabeth
Thanks. I *think* things are working okay. Sigh. I have some work to do to get things more secure, but I’m on the right track.

Oh, I tinker with my blog all the time… but yeah, I understand the frustration if you made a little tweak and then something fundamental breaks because of it. Ugh, indeed.
I think I broke my (drip) coffee maker, which is not a big deal because I use my Chemex glass carafe most of the time, but I have some ground coffee that I can only enjoy through a drip coffeemaker (it’s too finely ground for the Chemex filter) and now I don’t have a way to use it.
Elisabeth
You are knowledgeable and I am not – so my tinkering is just downright dangerous. Sigh. But I do have plans to hire someone to help out.
Darn about the coffeemaker ๐ Maybe something to go on your Christmas wish list?

Big Ugh… sorry that happened.
I have my backup run automatically every night (using this plugin “BackWPup”)and I get an email if there was a hiccup. I assume the hosting provider also runs backups. My only issue is that I am running out of server space and need an upgrade but I am to cheap.
Elisabeth
I am also running out of server space and that’s my issue. I need to get to the bottom of it ASAP and have some things lined up but need to “pull the trigger.” After reading your comment, I’m committed to doing it this week.

It’s on my to-do list fro Friday. I don’t want to run into any serious issue on NabLoPoMo…. I just dont know if my blog will be unreachable… now coming to think of it. arghhhh I should have checked that. Sigh… maybe I get into it tomorrow.
