Can you tell I’m not an influencer or an affiliate based on the timing of this post? Gift guides seem to get released earlier and earlier every year (I think I started seeing them in October?) and, for the most part, I absolutely love them. I get all sorts of interesting ideas and find browsing them both relaxing and fun.
Last year I did a big recap of our Christmas gifts (see here for extra fodder), and I’ll aim to do the same after this holiday season is in the proverbial bag (John reads my blog, so if I posted specifics before Christmas it would ruin some surprises).
Today’s post is less a gift guide and more a giant round-up of household favourites. Everything listed below is something we actually own, use, and appreciate. For the most part, if any of these items were to break, we would immediately look to purchase a replacement. Since I don’t have any affiliations, I have lazily opted to not include any links. If something catches your eye, you’ll need to figure out your own way to get it 😉
KITCHEN
- Magic Bullet. We’ve bought two bases and all the needed parts (blade + handled cups) at thrift stores for less than $20 total. These are great for making individual smoothies. We use ours regularly!
- Stanley IceFlow (Leakproof). Perhaps no longer trendy (what do I know?), but I absolutely LOVE mine and use it daily. I’m a big fan of the leakproof flip top.
- Silicon non-stick baking sheets. I don’t use these often but when I need them, I really appreciate their functionality!
- Cookie scoops. These are great for cookies and ice cream and just about anything else that needs scooping! I will say that the Pampered Chef brand are the best ones I’ve ever used – quality really matters; I have the small and medium sizes, 1 and 2 tablespoons of volume respectively.
- 4-cup liquid measuring cup. It’s so helpful to have something larger than the standard 2 cups. (I also really like Tupperware and Pampered Chef batter bowls and have been gifted one of each over the years and use them all the time.)
- Metal mixing bowls with lids. My mother-in-law gifted us a set when we got married and they are in regular use. Good quality mixing bowls WITH lids are so versatile! (The lids are key!)
- Sundae spoons. Another beloved gift from my MIL, her original set of 8 just wasn’t enough for our family. We bought more and now use about a dozen long-handled sundae spoons per day. People in our household reach for them to eat things like yogurt and ice cream, but my favourite is using them to stir creamer into coffee or tea, especially in our tallest mugs. They’re also great for reaching the bottom of jars!
- Rice cooker. We own a small, simple rice cooker (thrifted for about $5!) and absolutely love having one.
- Multicoloured measuring cups. We were gifted a set of four multicoloured measuring cups. Ours happen to be Pampered Chef but the brand shouldn’t be the important bit…it’s having different colours. We have all learned that green is 1/4, blue is 1/3, yellow is 1/2, and red is 1 cup; even if the cups aren’t nested for some reason, I immediately know the volume based on the colour! “I need a blue cup of sugar!” would be understood by everyone in our family to be 1/3 cup.
BIBLE/READING
- The Bible Recap by Tara-Leigh Cobble has changed my life. I have so appreciated this companion guide for daily Bible reading. I usually find devotionals patronizing and/or predictable and/or (*whisper*) boring and/or filled with wordy fluff. For me, The Bible Recap has avoided ALL of these common pitfalls. It arranges the Bible into 365 chronological sections (#Love), and then there is a two-page spread recapping and explaining the context of the text. I bought it in the faux leather cover and it has held up so well. Second to my Bible, this is the Christian reference book I now cherish the most.
- A thin Bible. I own the exact Bible pictured (ESV translation). I love it so much. It has held up exceptionally well, is lightweight, but somehow the pages aren’t horribly thin and the writing isn’t microscopic. And it’s so pretty!
- Mr Pen Highlighters. Another thing I adore. These don’t bleed through and are like a translucent crayon. Highly recommend if you’re highlighting a Bible or any book where you don’t want highlighters to bleed through.
- Page flags. I love to mark quotes in books. I have the set pictured (from Amazon). I like that the flags come on a bookmark, so I can just slip them inside whatever book I’m reading.
- Pilot Juice Up 0.4. Thanks forever to SHU for turning me on to these pens. They are a favourite in our household.
- Sprouted Planner. This will be my fourth year using a Sprouted Planner and I have no desire to use anything else.
SELF CARE
- Unbrush. I know there are cheaper options that work well (Ninabella is the brand Belle has and it’s under $15 and is the first brush to last her more than a year – we had issues with the quality of Wet brushes and both Unbrush and Ninabella have been worlds better for us). I can’t say enough good things about my Unbrush. I love how light it is (at first it felt too light and flimsy, but after I got used to it, I realize that is part of the magic!). I love how well it brushes through hair (no tangling). I love how it can be used in the shower and then with a blowdryer. BIG FAN!
- Curaprox toothbrushes. They aren’t cheap, but just look at the fun colours. Also, I think these are my favourite manual toothbrushes EVER.
- Spotify. Music is balm to my soul. I use Spotify daily and can’t imagine life without having most of the music in the world at my fingertips. I think a subscription would make a wonderful Christmas gift.
- Magic bags. We’ve amassed quite a collection over the years and they all get constant use in our household! (As I type this I have one on my feet and one in my lap.)
- Heated floor mat. This is a new-to-me item, but I’ve loved it enough already that I feel like insisting everyone who struggles with cold feet must buy this mat. (If you do, make sure to ALWAYS unplug it when you’re away from your desk.)
TRAVEL
- Contoured eye masks. I use an eye mask every night for sleeping and will never look back from these “puffy” masks that are designed so eyelids can fully blink beneath them. I don’t wear false lashes, but I’ve heard these are great for protecting those as well!
- One Line A Day Journal. The version pictured is the one I own and I use daily. I haven’t missed a single day in THREE YEARS. It goes with me everywhere. I rarely write anything profound, but I really appreciate having a summary of each day’s events to look back on each successive year.
- TSA Approved clear zippered bags. For years we used Ziploc bags to contain travel-sized toiletries in our carryons, but these have been a great (inexpensive) upgrade.
- Photobooks. I do a giant annual photobook that includes all the activities from a calendar year, but I know many people commemorate specific trips with a small photobook. What a great gift that would make! (I create all my photobooks with Blurb.)
- A universal adapter. John could not make it through a day of travel without this trusted companion.
- Compression packing cubes. (Or packing cubes in general.) I’m a big fan, not only for space-saving, but also for how well I can keep my clothes organized when I’m away from home.
HOUSE
- Yolink water sensors. I am terrified of water leaks in our house. These are great for peace of mind.
- Smart plugs. I have mixed feelings about smart gadgets, but even I have to admit that smart plugs are handy.
- Exercise ball chair. I’ve a chair just like this for years in our office and still love it!
- Reusable grocery bins. I use them for transporting just about everything (in no way limited to groceries).
- A nice-smelling candle. This maple syrup one is our absolute favourite candle. EVER.
- Eufy robovacuum. We own two Eufy brand robovacuums and treat them like beloved members of the family.
- Method spray. Maybe not “main gift” material, but I love Method products. Their pink grapefruit spray is my favourite scent.
- Vileda Spin Mop. I hate cleaning floors but this almost makes the task enjoyable. And it is the only mopping system I have found that will not leave streaks on our laminate.
- IKEA hanging dryer. We use this for air-drying merino wool socks. Works like a charm.
- Special candlesticks. These Georg Jansen ones are ridiculously expensive to buy in North America, but there are lots of lovely candlestick options these days. We light candles almost every evening for supper and the experience is extra special because we’re using beautiful candlesticks.
- Bottom-loading water cooler. I think this is the single most-loved appliance in our house. We drink SO much water, and this is perfection.
- Delicates bags. How did I make it through almost 4 decades of living on this earth without bags for our delicates?
WEARABLES
- High-quality socks. Darn Tough are our absolute favourite brand. They have a lifetime unconditional guarantee and we can confirm they stand behind this with zero challenge.
- Blundstones. Pricey but, again, they really stand behind their products. We’ve had two pairs replaced by their warranty department and will continue to invest in these shoes for years to come because they are so versatile!
- Crocs. For the record, I bought pairs for John and I long before they were trending with the young, hip crowd. (I bet it’s decidedly NOT cool to call anyone hip these days.)
- Knotted headband. I use these daily from October to May. Since I have long-ish hair and it’s usually up in a bun, these are invaluable for keeping my sensitive ears warm.
- Nivea Lip Care. On the cheaper end of the spectrum…this is my go-to lip balm and has been for years and years.
GAMES/BOY
- Monopoly Deal. Our kids love this game and it usually takes less than 15 minutes to get through a round. It’s a million times faster (and better) than “real” Monopoly.
- Disco lightbulb. We bought one years ago for our daughter at a yard sale ($1!) and she still has it hanging in her closet. (Bonus: her friends think it’s cool.)
- Codenames. So fun and lots of variations on the game (words, pictures, pop culture).
- Scattergories. A family favourite. I’m not a real “game” person, but I always enjoy Scattergories.
- Sorry. I grew up playing Sorry and it is beloved by the kids. I’ll admit the newer edition isn’t nearly as good as the original. If you can find the original, buy that one…but if you get a new version, we play with the old rules.
- LEGO. Mic drop.
- Five Crowns. Maybe our favourite family card game?
- Crokinole. Very fun, though it does take up a lot of space. Sometimes we just leave this set up for a few days on the dining room table and I find people naturally flock to it to play games throughout the day.
- Bedtime shadow books. These are SO fun. I haven’t held on to many books from my kids’ childhoods, but this one will stay on my shelf forever.
- Over-the-door basketball net. Indy has gotten dozens and dozens of hours of fun out of a set we bought him years ago.
- Speed cube. Inexpensive speed cubes on Amazon tend to be excellent. Speed cubes are much “smoother” for transitions, which means they can be solved faster than traditional Rubik’s cubes.
- A fish tank + fish. I mean…if our family can take the plunge, surely someone else can this Christmas 😉
TEEN GIRL
I asked for some feedback about Belle’s all-time favourite items. (Both her Stanley waterbottles made the list, but I’m not including a picture since they show up above; she also mentioned her love of art supplies – markers, watercolours, nice paper, scrapbooking supplies, stickers, art kits.)
- Lululemon. Not surprisingly, she has jumped on the bandwagon. She owns a T-shirt, a pair of leggings, a pair of loose black dance pants, and a zip-up sweater. They have all been purchased at thrift stores for $10 or less. I have zero plan to buy her any new Lulu things this Christmas, but always keep my eye open at thrift stores!
- Student Study Bible. This was one of her main Christmas requests a few years ago and this Bible has been amazing. She loves it and it looks well loved. She has doodled and drawn and added in stickers and I’m so happy it no longer looks pristine because it means she’s using it! It’s quite big because there are something like 900+ footnotes – they give lots of cultural context, diagrams, maps, and fun facts.
- Lava lamp. Another thrifted purchase we’ve had for years, but it lends a nice ambience to any kid’s room!
- Puma socks. Low-cut Puma socks seem to be all the rage among her friend group. This is basically the only sock she wears and they hold up SO well – she’s owned them for a year and hasn’t put a hole in a single sock, despite wearing them almost every single day. (Note: she is extremely “easy” on socks and footwear, so I can’t guarantee they’ll be indestructible for others.)
- The Ordinary Serum. When Belle was working at camp this summer it seemed like everyone was using the Ordinary Serum; she had a Sephora gift card from her birthday and bought some for herself and has loved it. I think it’s $12/bottle? Pretty inexpensive as serums go!
- Mad Libs. A perennial favourite for both kids.
- Wreck This Journal. Belle absolutely LOVED this – it’s a book full of fun, interactive prompts. For a year or two, we used these as our go-to birthday gift for her friends.
- Letterboard. We bought ours at the Dollarstore and it has worked great. She loves it!
- IKEA pegboard. I think she mentioned this twice as one of her all-time favourite things! Very versatile and allows for lots of fun displays and self-expression.
These next two are the stand-out items she highlighted as loving when she was younger.
- Shopkins. Belle LOVED tiny things and these scratched that itch perfectly. We have had so many Shopkins in our house over the years! They’re soft and flexible, they’re fun, they’re small and don’t take up tons of space. (It was also quite easy to find quite a few at thrift stores.)
- Calico Critters. More of an investment, we only started buying them because Belle had inherited some Calico items from a friend. But for a year or two, she really enjoyed playing with Calico Critters and they are well made toys.
STOCKINGS STUFFER IDEAS
- Lotions, lip balms, fancy shampoos, make-up removal products.
- Whoopie cushion. (Hilarious.)
- Invisible ink pens. (Very fun!)
- A new Christmas ornament.
- A little plant.
- Festive mug + a bag of coffee/hot chocolate.
- Beef jerky.
- Measuring tape.
- Nice reusable shopping bag.
- Earrings.
- A cozy blanket. I firmly believe one can never have too many fuzzy blankets in their possession.
- Favourite foods.
- Finger gloves.
- Magnetic level.
- Blank notecards.
- Milk frother. The kids are obsessed and I kinda am too. It makes coffee more luxurious, but the main draw is how perfectly it mixes up a mug of frothy hot chocolate on cold winter days.
- Apple AirTags.
- A silk pillowcase (Mulberry silk are much cheaper and provide most of the same benefits – I have $20 “silk” pillowcase and absolutely love it. Tip: buy one with a zipper closure, not envelope enclosure!)
- TubShroom. Amazing if anyone in your house sheds long hair in the shower.
Your turn.
- How do you feel about gift guides?
- Tell me some of your absolute favourite things. (Would any of them make good Christmas gifts?)
- Do you own anything I’ve mentioned above?
- Has anyone played Crokinole before?

My favorite recent gift was a 1 cup glass measuring cup. It’s cute and very handy. Sometimes you don’t want to dirty the big glass measuring cups. I might need to invest in a set of color coded small measuring cups. In a fit of frustration of never finding the right size, I went out and bought 3 matching sets of cups. However, the labels have worn off so I have to judge by size. ( marking them with sharpies lasts only so long.)
Have you ever tried the card game “Set”. Fun and can be short. Also “Coup” which I lose all the time we play because I can’t lie consistently.
Elisabeth
I cannot recommend colour-coded measuring cups enough! I have a metal set (they were free, I didn’t buy them!) and it drives me to DISTRACTION not being able to immediately tell which is which.
I’ve never heard of either of those games. Going to look them up now.
Set reminds me a bit of Spot It, maybe? I love games that can be short.
I’m terrible at lying, too!
Sarah
Dorothy and Coop had that journal and loved it and YES on the Calicos. I am going to snag (LOL) an unbrush for Dorothy and Minnie’s stockings– thanks for the rec!
Elisabeth
Ha. Love your puns, Sarah.
I’m a big fan. The Ninabella is great too, but I prefer the Unbrush. I would buy another one in an INSTANT if something happened to mine. Though, as I mentioned, it does feel soooo cheap and flimsy. It’s not, promise!
Birchie
I see lots of good things on the list!
– Can we agree that all mixing bowls should have lids?
– I owe many nights of great sleep on the road to my eye mask.
– Team 5 Crowns! It’s one of our favorite family games
Elisabeth
Yes. Mixing bowls and just about any baking dish. I have some 9×13’s we got for our wedding shower and they are 1000x more practical than a 9×13 without a lid. It makes stacking leftovers in the fridge so much easier.
Team Eye Mask forever.

I was excited to see the can of maple syrup thinking that is what it was. We were in Montreal last weekend and bought a tin of syrup because it fit in our checked luggage and we didn’t have to worry about it leaking. We didn’t see any candles in the tins, so I will have to look on line. The syrup is great (and dare I say a little better than in the states?!?!?!)
Elisabeth
Canada is world famous for our maple syrup!
Here’s a link to the candle (I usually find it locally, but this apparently ships to the US). It smells heavenly and lasts for a very long time. The wooden wick is a cool novelty feature, but you can usually buy with a wooden wick and with a regular wick. I think the regular wick works a bit better, but I buy them both. They make excellent gifts!
Jenny
I LOVE gift guides! And, I’m still buying gifts so it’s not too late. I see some of my favorite things here, LIKE SCENTED CANDLES, and some things my kids either have or have had in the past- lava lamp (both kids), the speed cube (my son), madlibs, and- I want colored measuring cups! Brilliant idea. I’m intrigued by the Codename game- I’m looking for some new games. Maybe that will end up under our tree.
Elisabeth
Belle loves Codenames. It’s a bit tricky for younger kids (so Indy doesn’t love it), but a lot of fun for anyone 10-13+ depending on their creativity and language fluency. We have both the picture and the word version; I think we prefer the pictures, but maybe that’s because we play it more since Indy does better with the pictures. It’s a fun game!
The coloured measuring cups are sooooo handy.
Jean C
I ordered the foot heating pad for my daughter’s birthday based on your recommendation. Her feet are always cold. She loves it.
I just ordered the Vileda mop system – I had been on the fence and your recommendation pushed me over. I actually need one but didn’t know what brand was best. Yesterday I was using a conventional mop and was reminded that I hate hand wringing it. Thanks for the recommendations.
Elisabeth
Jean, I’m so glad your daughter like the foot heating mat. I’ve been very happy with mine and it eliminates my “cold feet in the office” issue.
I hate mopping. HATE it. And I’ve had a series of different mops over the years – including a steam mop (borrowed from a friend to “test” drive it – and this is the only system that I have found works like a charm. I think it’s called Cedar something in the US? I hope you find it helpful and a big improvement over wringing things out by hand!
Allison
this is amazing! I saw the maple syrup candle at Shoppers Drug Mart and was considering buying it for Angus (he lives in the U.S. and I always have a set of Canadian content gifts) – glad to have a rec on the scent!
How have I never thought of colour-coding for measuring cups? the number of times I’m squinting at the bottom of my stainless steel cup for the etched 1/3 or 1/4 – how DUMB.
also going to get the zipper bags for traveling for my always-traveling husband. Thank-you so much!
Elisabeth
We are HUGE fans of those candles. I’ve been buying and gifting them for years. They are always, always, always a hit.
I suppose we could find ways to colour code existing measuring cups with electrical tape around the handles or something? But my sister gifted Belle a coloured set years ago and I just claimed them as my own and we have never looked back.
I’m a big fan of the zipper bags; I’m pretty sure Nicole ordered and used these when I mentioned them before!
Suzanne
I love gift guides! This was super fun to browse. Codenames and Scattergories are two of my favorite games, too! And I love the knit headband. It looks so cozy! That pegboard looks like such a great idea for a teen room. Hmm.
Elisabeth
The pegboard has limitless possibilities! We bought ours from IKEA, but I’m sure there are lots of other options/systems.
Alexandra
I’m a big fan of Gift Guides, I love scrolling them to get ideas. They always throw up something useful. Just as yours has done now. I’ve been making notes. Oh, and I’m team Nivea all the way.
My kitchen is already fully kitted out with most of the things you mention, except the rice cooker. I’ve been cooking rice the old fashioned way for decades. Measuring cups, spoons and jugs are a must for anyone.
Games in this household are Yahtzee and Scrabble. Our two favourites. Especially as they’re only the two of us. Cards of course. We play a lot of cribbage.
And the heating pad is already on my Christmas list in the hope of someone buying me one.
Elisabeth
I said I didn’t need a rice cooker. And then John convinced me we did. We did.
I don’t think my kids have ever played with Yahtzee or Scrabble. We have a card game version of Scrabble but it’s honestly pretty lame…(it was gifted to us).
I hope you get the heating mat!
Alexandra
If someone gifted me the rice cooker, I might use it, but as I have no counter space, it’s not something I plan on getting.
Oh, you have to buy the real thing, we, that is, the family, have fun playing both. And all get quite competitive with both.
And yeah, I hope I get one too. 😀
Elisabeth
We store just about everything in cupboards. Other than our microwave, no little appliance stays out in the open!
Central Calif Artist Jana
What a TON of work to put this together!! Most of this is stuff I’ve never heard of, and I could write a stack of questions. Instead, I’ll just say that I’ve used a set of stainless mixing bowls with lids for 38 years (wedding gift) and that I live in Crocs. They are the only shoes that work with my numb/tingling feet. They are also the only shoes that don’t regularly “update” (read “ruin”) their original design, which is a rare thing that one can count on.
Thank you for this post, Elisabeth! I will probably refer to it multiple times.
Okay, just one question: why does a teenager with perfect skin and natural beauty need serum? What’s it for??
Elisabeth
Bowls with lids are a timeless gift.
Crocs are amazing. The only person I know to destroy Crocs is Indy, but he’s hard on every single pair of footwear he owns, so that is the edge case. John and I basically use them exclusively inside the house, but I often sneak out to run errands in mine, too. They are bright purple so don’t exactly fly under the radar.
Re the serums. She doesn’t really need the serum. It is to help her fit in with her peers. Actually, to be fair, I think it DID help with acne. And it encouraged her to wash her face daily (you put the serum on at night on a clean face), and did help her skin stay moisturized. But, at the end of the day, it was mostly peer pressure that made her want to use it. I’d rather that than Botox…! And it’s so inexpensive compared to many face products. I am always gobsmacked by the price on various lotions and creams and serums.
My one and only serum is organic coconut oil (just kidding – it’s not actually a serum, I just decant a little bit into a bottle from a large jar in my kitchen). She actually did try to use coconut oil but on teen skin it was pretty awful!
Lisa's Yarns
I enjoy wish list/gift guides/favorites posts from friends I know. I do not care for the big gift guides that are meant to generate revenue for the blogger from affiliate links. I understand (some) people need to make money from their blog but it makes me twitchy to see multiple blog posts with gift lists. But I am kind of, well, anti gifts I guess you could say? Like if I could wave my hands and do away with gifts during the holiday season, I would… I recognize that I am fortunate to be able to buy anything I want or need and that is a luxury I don’t take for granted, but I wish more people recognized that they have that status and we can do away with gifts? I’m talking about adults here – not kids of course! Gifts are a huge part of the season for kids, of course! (Can we still be friends w/ this view of presents that I have??)
We got Paul sleeping queens as one of his stocking presents. I will have to remember 5 crowns next year. He loves card games so I am trying to slowly grow our collection. I have no idea what Crokinole even is. This must be a Canadian thing? But I love any and all games so I am sure I would like it. So just make sure we play it when I come visit some day!
My favorite things are consumables. Things like bottles of wine, fun chocolates, hot chocolate bombs, etc etc.
Elisabeth
Ha – yes, we can still be friends. But things are going to be rocky over the holidays. (Just kidding.)
I feel the same way about gifts you do at every other time of the year. But at Christmas I really like gifts for my kids and John. Outside of them + my parents + any family that happens to be visiting, we just give out nice chocolate and a card to a few local friends/neighbours, coffee shop gift cards + nice chocolate to teachers…and that’s it. But we do go pretty BIG at Christmas (will be discussing soon).
I agree that I don’t love most blogger gift guides. But I do find ones that places like Buzzfeed put out can be so interesting. I also like to search specific strings like: Best gifts for teen girl or Best gifts for somehow who travels regularly or Best gifts for someone who has everything…loves to garden…loves to read etc. It’s often fascinating to see the range of interesting things I’d never heard of before.
I think it is a Canadian thing. It’s a bit like curling? You flick little round discs with your finger and try to knock your opponents rings off the board. YES! Remind me to get Crokinole out when you come visit <3
I also love consumables because they don't end up taking up space in the house. I try VERY hard to gift things people really want, need, or can consume.
Michelle G.
I love your gift guide – so many cool things are on it! The unbrush sounds really useful. I want every item on your kitchen list!! The sundae spoons, the measuring cups, the bowls with lids – all of it!
I did get the toothbrushes you mentioned above when you wrote about them in a previous post, and I agree that they are wonderful. They’re just the right firmness/softness and they’re pretty too!
Elisabeth
I’m so glad you ended up liking the toothbrushes!
The sundae spoons are AMAZING. So versatile. I’m a big fan (if you couldn’t tell).
Nicole MacPherson
So many great things here and I will say that you influenced me to buy those toiletry cases and the compression cubes! Life changing indeed. Question about the brush: is it easy on the hair? I have to be so careful because, well, balding. I need something that doesn’t pull. I do have a brush San recommended and it is great, but I’m always on the lookout for new products.
I love how practical so many of your ideas are! I want this list just for me!
Elisabeth
I find it EXTREMELY easy on my hair, but I do have a lot of hair and shed like crazy. So I can’t say for sure, but I never, ever get snags. The bristles are a flexible plastic and there is no metal tip on them which is what always used to snag for me.
The Ninabella is the one San recommended and what I bought for Belle. It’s a great brush too, but I definitely prefer the Unbrush! I’d say if you’re interested, it’s worth a try? Though it’s definitely not the cheapest brush on the market…
KV```
Ermagerd, that maple syrup candle is genius! Thank you for the perfect gift idea for my hard-to-shop-for parent.
Question: what service do you use to print up your annual photo books? (I tried searching ‘album’ here to no avail…) You inspired me this year to pull together some family picture books. cheers!
Elisabeth
I use Blurb! I’ve been using them ever since My Publisher was absorbed into Shutterfly.
I love Blurb because it has software so you can build your book offline.
Maria
Huh, here we’ve been calling them rice bags when magic bags is a much cooler name! They’re super easy to make too if you have someone who can do very very basic sewing on a machine.
Those ikea octopus hangers are life savers. We have 8 in use right now. The vast majority of our laundry we hang to dry (that is a Frugal Fun Fact about our household) and those are great space savers and good for the little clothes my little people wear. We also have one for hanging wet mittens and hats to dry.
Elisabeth
Magic Bag is a brand name (sort of like people referring to any brand of facial tissue by the term Kleenex).
That is a lot of hangers! We have one, though I’ll admit we could do with a second one! My trick for hats and mittens is these vented cones that fit over our vents. It forces warm air to go up inside. It’s the only way I can manage to get gloves/mittens dry…though friends with a wood stove can dry anything quickly. Alas, with no wood heat, it’s much harder to dry things fast.
Stephany
ELISABETH! I think you have just saved my life. I have been dealing with an issue in my bedroom where I had to position my lamp on the other side of my nightstand and have to GET UP to turn it off, so I rarely read in bed at night. BUT SMART PLUGS!!! I have been searching for a solution and it’s right here on your blog! I am buying myself some RIGHT NOW. Thank you for making my life better (in many ways, but specifically for introducing me to smart plugs).
I have that same One Line a Day journal. I’m finishing up my third year! They have so many cuter options now than they did a few years ago, too! I bought everyone in my book club one for our Christmas gift exchange.
Scattegories is a favorite in my family, too. I bought Five Crowns a few months ago and excited to dig it out to play when we return to game nights in February. 🙂
Elisabeth
What can I say…I’m in the life-saving business. Haha. Smart plugs can be controlled by your voice if you have something like a Google speaker (what we have), your phone (John does this regularly), and you can even set things to turn on/off at the same time. We have a smart plug outside, so I can turn on/off the outside Edison bulbs around our shed with just a voice command.
I can’t wait to hear how the smart plugs work out. And I can’t believe you haven’t been reading in bed! You love bed! You love reading! Fingers crossed smart plugs are the answer you’ve been looking for.
San
We love our TubShroom. And AirTags! I also own these clear travel bags and an international adapter. This is such a great list. I also love Favorites posts and gift guides because you never know what you’re missing out on 😉
Elisabeth
It might have been you that got me started on the clear travel bags.
I first encountered a TubShroom when I was visiting my sister in South Carolina. She has three daughters with long, curly hair. It felt revolutionary and I think I ordered one before I even got back to Canada.
Alexandra
I would store mine in a cupboard too, Elisabeth, but you’ve obviously never seen my tiny teeny galley kitchen. Space? Ha!
Kate
This is such a great list!! I enjoy reading through gift guides but often find them to miss the mark for my own personal gift-giving preferences – lists by “normal people” (which I mean in the best way!!) are much more relevant, so I’ve especially appreciated gift guides from the blogosphere or episodes from podcasts like the Lazy Genius or Girls Next Door.
After a particularly fraught experience brushing my second grader’s hair this morning, I’m thinking the Unbrush needs to be an immediate purchase (and maybe also a silk pillowcase!). And I’ve been curious about the spin mops and may need to upgrade our old standard mop & bucket setup.
Some of my favourite things to gift: scented candles (I bought some fun literary-themed candles from Etsy to gift this Christmas), personalized sherpa blankets for new babies, personalized ornaments (this year my parents are getting one with the names of all 7 of their grandchildren, 2 of whom were born last month!), and tickets to special shows or performances. I’m especially pleased with my big gift for Nick this year: tickets to see Jerry Seinfeld’s show coming to Pittsburgh in April. To make it even more fun, I already arranged with some of our best friends to come with us (unbeknownst to him) so we’ll have a fun double date! We’re also giving my older girls tickets to go with Nick to see a Harlem Globetrotters game over Christmas break. I love experience gifts that not only make lasting memories but also give you something to look forward to after that post-holiday slump.

Yes! Agreed on the “normal” people thing. Some highly curated gift guides are full of things I would never, ever use.
I love silk pillowcases and Belle will be getting one for her birthday this year. The Unbrush is pretty awesome. I love that there are no little brush tips to fall off and snag. I think Nicole is going to buy one and I’m sure she’ll report back!
I LOVE my spin mop. If it broke (as with my brush), I would buy another one immediately. That doesn’t mean there aren’t even better systems out there I suppose, but it is by far the best I’ve found yet.
JERRY SEINFELD! How fun. And I love that it’s a surprise which is extra special when you’re an adult and tend to know most things you’ll be receiving.

Well, reading this December 23rd it obviously is too late for inspiration this year but it has some really interesting and nice things on it.
I actually also gifted invisible pens the year to my niece and nephew and my godchild. Hope they enjoy them.

Yes! We gave these out as favours at Indy’s recent party and they are so much fun! For basically any age, too.

This is a fantastic list! I copied/pasted two of your items to investigate. (eye masks and pens—I hate crappy pens and I seem to have so many around here)
I had the One Line Daily years ago, but I failed it miserably. I applaud your dedication!

These are great pens.
And those eye masks. I LOVE them so, so much.
