And just like that, the first week of our walking challenge is in the books. I don’t know about you, but I had to push through some seriously uncooperative weather (rain, snow, and sleet – literally) along with a short-lived (but intense) illness. I’m excited to watch the weather – and the greenery – transform as we continue through April.
In previous CBWCs, I aimed to snap a photo on every walk. But this month, with the gray skies and dreariness, I decided to get a bit creative and reflect on a FIG related to each walk – along with the occasional picture because, well, it’s me!
ELISABETH’S WALKS

Distance | Company | FIG
- 3.27 km | John | A text message from Lisa while I was on my first walk of the challenge. Knowing that this walking club is inspiring people to move their bodies truly makes me happy.
- 4.62 km | Joy | Despite cold, windy weather we kept up a brisk pace and had some fascinating discussions about books we’ve been reading.
- 1.57 km | John + Indy | Being with my two favourite boys in the whole world. Seeing them walking and talking together is precious. At one point Indy reached over and grabbed John’s hand and my heart melted.
- 5.04 km | John | Sneakers. I hate walking in winter boots, so it’s a joy to be outside in sneakers.
- 3.36 km | John | The smell of wood smoke wafting over from our neighbour’s campfire. It was cold outside and knowing people were warming themselves around a fire was comforting and pleasant.
- 0.73 km | Belle | It was dismal outside – rainy and brown – so we walked for 10 minutes and that was enough! Ironically, in such a short time, I managed to think of many FIGs. On our way home from church earlier in the day we had been talking about fire stations; seeing a fire hydrant reminded me how thankful I am we have a department in our little town. I was also thankful for the time alone with Belle (Indy was at a friend’s house). Then we spotted a pair of cardinals on a neighbour’s lawn. And right before we got home we stopped to listen to a bird high in a tree that was singing with gusto.
- 4.20 km | Solo | Sunshine. It clouded over after my walk, but while I was outside there was blue sky and sunshine! I listened to a fascinating podcast episode about insomnia and cognitive behavioural therapy while walking to a local farmer’s market to buy a little Nova Scotia treat for Coco.
AROUND THE (BLOGO)SPHERE

- Sabine has been walking in the Netherlands! She spotted vibrant tulips ready to bloom – a sure sign of spring.

- Sabine also submitted a FIG (who am I to turn down fresh FIGs?). She writes: Whoever came up with the planning for all trees, bushes etc. in our neighborhood (built in the 1970s), I am grateful that they planted a lot of trees, especially blooming trees such as a number of white/cream colored magnolia trees.
- mbmom11 spent most of her week in the Midwest fighting cloudy skies and wind but, despite the slow arrival of spring, “herringbone sidewalks in my historic town are attractive at least!”
- Kyria walked to an outdoor market and brought home a rainbow of fresh veggies.
- Julie sent me pictures of various beautiful flowering things spotted in the suburbs of California.
- Sophie saw butterflies and mushrooms as big as her hand…but, alas, no kangaroos. She has assured me she will make it happen!
- Nicole (and Rex) saw all sorts of things on their daily walks, including a beaver dam. She didn’t manage to get a picture of the rabbit-headed motorbiker, but she did share a picture of the state of her coat and Rex’s fur after a 5-km walk in the pouring rain. There’s no bad weather, just bad gear I suppose?!

- Jacquie sent pictures from her favourite walk along the Brunette River which is near her home. “On one side of the trail is the river and the other side is a train track. Near the end of the trail is an overpass that is full of graffiti. The photo I attached is kind of creepy, but also quite impressive.”
- Engie (and Hannah) walked SO MUCH. I am always amazed by how many outdoor adventures this fabulous duo fit into each day. Dr. BB even joined in on the walking fun.
- Lisa and Paul used leg-power to get themselves to church on Sunday morning.
- San spotted intriguing sculptures (by artist Helen Post) in a local park.
And last, but certainly not least, Alexandra was thwarted by weather and illness but still managed to fit in over 4 km each day!
As we continue on with Week 2, I’m excited to see how our walks evolve – whether it’s changing weather or new perspectives we’re discovering on our daily routes. Let’s keep the momentum going!
- What was the most interesting thing you spotted on your first week of walks?

Yay for CBWC month! I have been looking forward to this post all week! I love seeing everyone’s neighborhoods, flowers, companions and things that they saw along their walks! I hope that text from Lisa is not a 4:15 am! Or if it is, good on you! I love that photo of the kids walking to school. That view never gets old.
I have been walking but am not running as much as I had been before, which really is just laziness, as I have pretty good weather at the moment! However, I have been out exploring, and buying fresh veggies of course! Thanks for the inspiration to keep going!
Elisabeth
NO! It was 4:15 PM (thank goodness). I am almost always sleeping at 4:15 am (remember, it’s Elisabeth writing, not you or Nicole!).
I love that you can recognize some of the views from my daily walks <3
Lisa’s Yarns
What a fun recap! This has been a pretty rough month of weather with snow, wind, and cold weather. Bleh. The most interesting thing we saw was the a huge pile of dirt between 2 lots along the creek that wasn’t there when Phil in the boys walked there a few days earlier. Boy if Will could have seen the digger at work, that would be something. But we marveled at how it would be possible to fit a house on the lot… and what the neighboring lots must think, especially since the lot is on a steep incline going down to the creek so it’s a precarious place to build.
Elisabeth
I will admit I’ve been shocked by the snow the last few days. Three of 9 days in April have involved a fair amount of snow. At least it doesn’t linger at this point in the spring.
Ha! It’s easy to tell your a boy-mom when a pile of dirt is a highlight. I remember purposefully taking a route for months that would take us by diggers when Indy was little. I have so many pictures of him in his stroller reaching toward excavators!
Nicole MacPherson
Yay for CBWC! I love seeing everyone’s photos. Thanks Elisabeth!!
Elisabeth
You know a certain subset of people are only showing up to read this post today in hopes of catching a glimpse of Rex, so thanks for giving the crowd what they demand 🙂
Suzanne
This is so great, Elisabeth! I love the pairing of walks with FIGs.
It has been a bit of a slog for me to get a walk in every day, but I think I’ve managed it all but one (?) day so far. Yesterday was a long, slow amble around the downtown while my kid was in an activity, and in no way was it exercise, but it COUNTS.
Elisabeth
I am here for ambles, Suzanne! Two days I have literally just aimed for 10 minutes. And I love that you chose to fill the waiting time with a walk/amble! I think you get bonus points because you were moving your body and, I assume, really enjoying the walk and using the time to process thoughts etc. Gold stars!
Jenny
Well, I’m not participating in CBBC which makes NO SENSE, because I like walking and I live in Florida where the weather is conducive. You guys are up there walking in the sleet, which I’m looking out the window at beautiful sunshine. Anyway… i am enjoying it vicariously! I love everyone’s photos- it’s interesting to see the weather in different areas. And it will be interesting to see how your weather changes through the month- I guessing we’ll have some love spring photos soon.
Yay for all the walkers!
Elisabeth
Jenny, you are exercising and moving every single day, so you are a member in spirit 🙂
I would take some of that beautiful sunshine…
Michelle G.
I love seeing all these photos! What fun! I planned to take photos during my walks…but I didn’t do it. The most exciting thing I saw was a robin!
Elisabeth
The first robin spotting is always such a delight. Poor things have been around for a while and we’ve had THREE snow storms. Oops. I guess it’s not quite spring here just yet.

I am currently sidelined with a knee injury, and trying to keep walking made it worse, so I am very consciously not stressing myself out about missing this challenge, and am doing yoga instead. We had a snowfall yesterday that would have been beautiful in November or December and was a freaking abomination in April, and yes, we have had the rain, freezing and otherwise. I am looking forward to my daughter getting home so I have a walking partner.
Elisabeth
Gold stars for listening to your body and you are doing Nicole’s yoga challenge so…yay!
Ah weather in Canada in April. You really never know what you’re going to get.
Alexandra
Firstly, thank you for the shout out. I have to say, this is a fantastic turn out for week one. So many finding time to get out (in good weather, and not) and take photos. And a BIG thank you to you for hosting this and sharing everyone’s joy with us all.
Our weather continues to flip from crazy windy and frigidly cold to mild and balmy. April is a crazy month here. I’m hoping once my tummy troubles settle down to be able to get out next week, weather permitting, and take myself off to the botanic gardens for some much need flower therapy.
Elisabeth
This April has been all over the place. I think I had my hopes up that April will suddenly bring balmy weather. That has NOT happened. In fact, I’m looking out my window while I type this response and there is snow on the ground!
Alexandra
Yeah, it’s been a wild ride and we’re only into the second week of April. March, in comparison, was mild here for March that is. I just hope it starts to improve soon, we have snow on the ground outside from yesterday’s storm.
Maria
Shoot. Totally forgot to send you pictures despite taking pictures specifically to send. I’ve walked every day so far – most days for 1-3 hours, but a couple days have been shorter. The weather has been either grotesque or gorgeous. So many days with snow. Why?!?!
Elisabeth
Send them to me for next week! I’m happy to include them in any of the upcoming walking updates.
The weather has been all over the place. I always act surprised, but I guess that is par for the course in Atlantic Canada in April. Still, I wouldn’t mind some consistency!
San
Oh I loved seeing all the photos from everyone’s walks! Thanks for this round-up, Elisabeth! So inspiring!

Oh this is so fun to see – and how different the world looks for everyone walking.
I was in bed for the first week of our CBWC so I only managed a few steps outside on the terrace. But I have started on Monday going outside again – unfortunately no pictures taken. I will share some water views from the river and walk through the woods.
Yesterday I managed a 5 km walk. So I am working on it.
I wonder… how long do you walk for the 4-5 km. I feel like it always takes so much more time then I think (I have).
Elisabeth
5 km takes me about 45 minutes if I go at a normal pace; I could do it in slightly less time if I hurried. Walking *is* time consuming!
