The first time I saw these questions (posed by Stephen Colbert to various and sundry celebrities), it was on Stephany’s blog. I meant to answer them during 2023 NaBloPoMo and then…forgot. Alexandra posted answers to the same questionnaire recently and I finally got my act together.
Without further ado, The Colbert Questionert.
- Best sandwich? The savoury open-faced egg-ham-and-special-sauce waffle sandwich John makes for at-home date nights. It’s knock-your-socks-off amazing. And, apparently, describing it requires a lot of hyphens.
- What’s one thing you own that you really should throw out? Self-loathing. (If only we could discard negative emotions as easily as we can dispose of holey socks.)
- What is the scariest animal? Anything that bites. I find snakes especially terrifying.
- Apples or oranges? Apples. Sweet Tango, Honeycrisp, or Gala.
- Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? Yes. I wrote the Detroit Red Wings and ended up getting Brendan Shanahan’s autograph.
- What do you think happens when we die? I believe eternity awaits us after death and that how we respond to the gospel message of Jesus Christ’s gift of grace and forgiveness determines where we spend that eternity.
- Favourite action movie? How can I choose? The Mission Impossible series?
- Favourite smell? The Christmas wax figurine gifted to my parents in 1972.
- Least favourite smell? Vomit? Sulphuric flatulence in a confined space?
- Exercise: worth it? *Sigh* I suppose so.
- Flat or sparkling? Sparkling if it’s flavoured, flat if it’s not.
- Most used app on your phone? A three-way tie: Feedly, Messages, WhatsApp.
- You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it? I would be tempted to cut my life short. Music is so important to me. To give me the will to live, I’m going to defiantly chose two. Worship: Still/PEACE by Hillsong. Contemporary: Everything’s Not Lost by Coldplay. I’m sure I’d be sick of both of them after about two days.
- What number am I thinking of? 17.
Describe the rest of your life in 5 words? What do you hope describes the rest of your life in 5 words. Growing more like Jesus daily.
Your turn. Feel free to answer all the questions. If that’s a bit too much…What do you think happens when we die? If you’ve asked someone for their autograph, do you still have it? Favourite smell and why?

Sulphuric flatulence! Ha. Also Jazz apples are good too! There are really a lot of good ones, and I still come across ones that I have never heard of. As far as dying, my answer to that is that I have no idea. I would like to think that I will go somewhere nice where I will be able to see people who have been gone for a while, but I guess you can ask me again after I am dead.
I hate it when people wear a lot of perfume, especially when I am in an enclosed space with them. I mean, I am all for not smelling bad, or even smelling good, but I really don’t think that heavy perfume smells good, and in fact, it gives me a headache. I had to move from my seat in the airport waiting room the other day because the lady next to me was DRENCHED in perfume. Also last night I went to dinner at a tiny bistro and there was a group of Spanish ladies who were stinking up the entire place. I really wanted to smell my escargo, not a mouth full of fake sweetness.
Elisabeth
I don’t know if I’ve had Jazz apples? But I love the name.
Yes! I am so, so sensitive to scents. I feel like it’s a lot less common to encounter drenched perfumes, but in Europe they haven’t gotten the no-scents memo. They make me feel nauseous and give me migraines.

Apples- preferably Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Gala, and Macintosh. Red delicious from a local orchard buy not a grocery store.
I wish I could throw out anxiety- I borrow trouble all the time.
I asked Sarah-Jessica Parker for her autograph when she was playing Annie on Broadway- our school went to the play in NYC and she was signing them before she went in.
Action movie- too many to choose! A surprise hit for me was Demolitian Man.
Number? 11.
After we die, hopefully Heaven with God’s grace and mercy.
Favorite smell- lilacs outside in the breeze. Least- so many- but the bathroom cleaning spray I mentioned yesterday makes it hard to breathe.
I think your take on one song for the rest of your life is the best possible.
Elisabeth
SJP! How fun. John saw her on Broadway in Once Upon a Mattress, but I don’t think he got her autograph.
I don’t think I’ve ever had Pink Lady? I tend to find Red Delicious a bit bitter, but I also almost never see them. I feel like it was so common when I was growing up, and now more specialty varieties have taken front billing in grocery stores.
Unfortunately, lilacs trigger my allergies 🙁 But I agree that the smell is heavenly.

SELF LOATHING! Elisabeth, I spit out my coffee. Bwahahaha. Yes, that should definitely be thrown out.
I have been meaning to do this as well since Stephany did it! Have I, no, but I will answer pertinent questions here. I don’t like action movies EXCEPT (you know what I’m going to say) Top Gun. Well, and Maverick. My ringtone is the Top Gun theme song.
Apples – my fave is McIntosh and all others can just go home. I like oranges if they are mandarin. Otherwise they are too hard to eat, too much pith (is it pith, that white stuff?)
I asked someone for their autograph, it was the guy who coached the Olympic hockey team and also the Flames at one point. I had no idea who it was. I was working at Pizza Hut and a bunch of guys wanted his autograph but didn’t have the balls to ask. So they asked ME to ask him, thinking he’d never turn down cute 16 year old me. And of course he didn’t. So I got autographs for them and for the life of me I cannot remember his name. WHAT WAS IT??? This is going to drive me crazy.
Best sandwich: I had one in Montepulciano and one in Rome that just killed it – roasted veg, pesto, etc. But for non-Italy sandwiches, I am going to go with Subway, it’s my travel treat. Tomato lettuce green pepper pickles avocado on whole wheat, with mustard and sub sauce.
Elisabeth
Why didn’t I think of Top Gun? I LOVE Maverick, though as a series, Mission Impossible is hard to beat and my kids are obsessed which makes it extra fun. I’m very excited to see the new release in May.
I’m with you on madarins/clementines only. Regular oranges have the seeds and so much pith. Ugh.
I also love Subway. It’s my favourite go-to “fast” food. It’s filling and fresh and I love being able to choose my own veggie adventure.
Jenny
Hahaha, I like your answer to the song question. One song for the rest of your life would be rough. And I couldn’t even choose a song I love, because I know I’d end up hating it after a month or so.
Apples! Honeycrisp.
Scariest animal… I should really go with something like a lion or grizzly bear, because they could kill me immediately. But there’s something super scary about a venomous snake, so I’ll go with that.
Favorite smell- Christmas tree (sigh…)
Elisabeth
I love, love, love listening to music on repeat and then I tend to hate it and never want to listen to it again.
I’m with you on snakes. They can be so stealthy. Thankfully, at this point, no poisonous snakes where I live in Canada.
The Christmas tree smell is both incredible AND brings up so many nostalgic memories, so I think it’s a double whammy as scents go. This was part of Belle’s beef about us not having a real tree this year…

Just a note, Elisabeth: Thanks for mentioning my post but, as I did some jiggling with the website, the url for it is now here: https://alexandrawolfe.ca/colbert-questionnaire/
Cheers.
Elisabeth
Oops! Fixed!
Alexandra
Thanks! 😀

I love all your answers, Elisabeth! I’ll answer a few!
Favorite sandwich – Grilled cheese!
Favorite apple – Honeycrisp
Scariest animal – there are SO many scary animals. I’d say hornets. They’re psychotic!
What happens after death? I can only trust that God has the master plan and I’ll just do my best while I’m here.
Elisabeth
Hornets ARE scary – and so unpredictable.
A good grilled cheese IS hard to beat.
Sophie
This is fun! Favourite sandwich could be a Reuben. Favourite apple probably a Pink Lady or Fuji, though I like the tartness of a Granny Smith too. Favourite action movie- maybe Die Hard? Most scary animal – Umm humans, responsible for more death and destruction than any other animal! But if I had to choose an alternative, maybe a great white shark? You can survive a snake bite, pretty hard to survive a shark bite!
Elisabeth
Good point about humans. Okay, sharks are terrifying, too. MOST animals are terrifying to me if I’m being honest. I would not make a good vet…
Ernie
These are fun questions. I will answer a few.
Flat water/drinks. I do not like seltzer at all.
I love honeycrisp apples and not a big fan of oranges. That pulp at the end is bluh.
Scary animal? Anything with a temper and teeth, esp if they are bigger than me.
Sandwich: I don’t eat them bc of celiac but in a former life I liked ham and cheese melted.
Exercise is TOTALLY worth it
Fav smell: baking cookies, or the first time I open the windows in the spring after a long cold winter
When I die: I believe in heaven. I believe that the life I live on earth will be how I am judged by God when we meet. My grandma always referred to dying as ‘going to my reward’ and I like that saying so much
Elisabeth
Agreed about the pulp! It’s such an awful texture.
“Scary animal? Anything with a temper and teeth, esp if they are bigger than me.” Loved this answer.
I love your grandma’s saying, too. Heaven definitely feels like it will be a reward after living through life here on earth which, quite frankly, seems to get more depraved and horrific with each passing year. *Sigh*
Steph
I really like that Hillsong song, too!!
Thanks for your responses. 🙂
Also, does your husband mail those awesome sandwiches?!
Elisabeth
It became a bit of an anthem for me and has some deep significance because of various life events the last few years. I know I would get tired of it if that was all I could listen to, but it’s the song that immediately popped to mind because of how much it has come to represent.
I wish we could send you one of his sandwiches. They are the literal best!
Lisa’s Yarns
These questions are fun! I should answer them on my blog sometime. I do believe there is an afterlife and I hope is that I will be reunited with a loved ones that I’ve lost. My favorite smell is a smell of my mom or brother’s house on Thanksgiving morning. I love that mirepoix and the smell of the turkey roasting
San
The Colbert Questionert has been sitting in my draft folder forever… such a fun questionnaire! 🙂 I loved Jude Law’s answer to ‘what is the scariest animal’ on the Colbert Show…. his answer: “fascist homo sapien”. Yep.
